Part  1  

Cri$cal   point   drying   –   Specimen   fixed   in   2.5%   glut,   rinsed   in   sodium  cacodylate   buffer,   dehydrated   in   ethanol   and   put   through   the   criHcal  point  dryer,  and  coated  with  plaHnum  in  the  spuJer  coater.  

Depth   of   field   –   Tangled   clump   of   hair.   Specimen   spuJer   coated   with  plaHnum.  

Backsca8er  (Secondary  image)  –  Specimen  was  leL  uncoated.  

Backsca8er  (BEI  composi$on  image)  –  Specimen  was  leL  uncoated.  

Low   kV   uncoated   sample   –   Specimen  was   leL   uncoated   and   was     air  dried.  

High  magnifica$on  –  Specimen  was  air  dried  and  was  coated  with  gold  palladium  in  the  spuJer  coater.  Taken  at    15  kV.  

Stereo   image   –   Specimen   was   air   dried   and   was   coated   with   gold  palladium  in  the  spuJer  coater.    Stereo  image  taken  using  rotaHon  of  +8  and  0    at  Hlt  of  50  degrees.  Taken  at    10  kV.  

Cryofracture  –  Specimen  was  dried  in  ethanol  and  freeze  fractured  using  liquid   nitrogen,   then   put   through   the   criHcal   point   dryer.   It   was   then  coated  in  plaHnum  in  the  spuJer  coater.    

Aesthe$c   –   Specimen   fixed   in   2.5%   glut,   rinsed   in   sodium   cacodylate  buffer,   dehydrated   in   ethanol   and   put   through   the   criHcal   point   dryer,  and  coated  with  plaHnum  in  the  spuJer  coater.

Part  2  

Biological  1  –  Hyphae  on  the  surface  of  a  mushroom  cap.  Specimen  air  dried  and  spuJer  coated  with  gold  palladium.    Taken  at  10  kV.        

Biological   2  –   Spores   and   underlying   hymenium   of   a   gilled  mushroom.  Specimen  air  dried  and  spuJer  coated  with  gold  palladium.    Taken  at  10  kV,  x1600.  

Biological   3   –   Surface   of   a   broken   toothpick.   Specimen   spuJer   coated  with  plaHnum.  

Biological   3   –   Tangled   clump   of   hair.   Specimen   spuJer   coated   with  plaHnum.  

Non-­‐biological   1  –   Cubic   crystalline   structures   on   a   chunk   of   rock   salt.  Specimen  spuJer  coated  with  plaHnum.  

Non-­‐biological   2   –   Crystalline   structures   on   a   chunk   of   rock   salt.  Specimen  spuJer  coated  with  plaHnum.  

Non-­‐biological  3  –  BEI  composiHon  image  of  the  metal  part  of  a  pushpin,  showing   indentaHons.   Darker   blotches   are   dust   with   lower   atomic  number.  Specimen  was  leL  uncoated.
