Be Happy, Healthy and Active! June 2019 Spring Garden Shopping Trip The Spring garden shopping trip brought lots of happy faces, including those of avid gardeners above. Dre' Dufford, who leads the Garden Club and organizes the yearly trip, was ecstatic about this year’s outing. She was especially excited to see all the staff waiting to help when the van arrived from Home Depot where the plants were purchased. She said, "It brought tears to my eyes when we pulled up to Kavod and saw the staff FROM EVERY DEPARTMENT charging the bus to help us unload." The raised garden beds are not only beautiful, but provide tasty treats to Kavod residents in the form of tomatoes and other favorite vegetables. Spring Garden Shopping Trip The Spring garden shopping trip brought lots of happy faces, including those of avid gardeners above. Dre' Dufford, who leads the Garden Club and organizes the yearly trip, was ecstatic about this year’s outing. Resident Council Minutes

Meeting Date: 04/26/19

PARTICIPANTS: M.S., E.L., J.F., G.H.

Procedural Updates:

I. Fire Drill Review: In the event of a fire alarm, residents should do the following:

a. If in your apartment: Stay within the apartment. The doors are fire resistant. Staff will inform you of the status of the drill.

b. If outside of your apartment: Should report to the AL dining room. The doors surrounding the dining room area are fire resistant and will close automatically when the alarm sounds.

Updates:

• Resident Council meetings will be the 4th Friday in January, April, July, and October.

• Discussed Fire Drill scenarios within all 3 buildings.

• Electrical cords and multi-use plugs not allowed in units due to the fire hazard. Toaster/toaster oven also not allowed.

• Question regarding if an air fryer would be allowed. Unsure of this at the time. Will research.

Activities:

• Assisted Living Voice – Feedback is that this is a great document. Several residents feel they should receive both copies.

Maintenance:

No updates at this time.

Next Resident Council meeting will be in JULY.

In addition, all Assisted Living residents are encouraged to attend the Senior Living Resident Council which occurs the first Thursday of every month at 2 pm. **Reminder that residents can meet independently for resident council at any time.**

Regulation Review of Resident Rights

A. The right to privacy and confidentiality, including:

1. The right to have private and unrestricted communications with any person of choice;

2. The right to private telephone calls or use of electronic communication;

3. The right to receive mail unopened;

4. The right to have visitors at any time; and

5. The right to private, consensual sexual activity.

A. The right to civil and religious liberties, including:

1. The right to be treated with dignity and respect.

2. The right to be free from sexual, verbal, physical, or emotional abuse, humiliation,

intimidation or punishment.

3. The right to be free from neglect.

4. The right to live free from financial exploitation, restraint, and involuntary confinement

except as allowed by the Secure Environment Requirements of the Chapter 7 AL regulations.

5. The right to vote;

6. The right to exercise choice in attending and participating in religious activities;

7. The right to wear clothing of choice unless otherwise indicated in the care plan;

8. The right to care and services that are not conditioned or limited because of a residents

personal, cultural or ethnic preference, or disability;

B. The right to personal and community engagement, including:

1. The right to socialize with other residents and participate in Assisted Living residence

activities, in accordance with the applicable care plan;

2. The right to full use of the Assisted Living residence common areas in compliance with

written house rules;

3. The right to participate in resident meetings, voice grievances and recommend changes in

policies and services without fear of reprisal;

4. The right to participate in activities outside of the Assisted Living residence and request

assistance with transportation; and

5. The right to reasonable use of the telephone including access to operator

6. Assistance for placing collect telephone calls. (At least one telephone accessible to residents

utilizing an auxiliary aid shall be available if the Assisted Living residence is occupied by one or

more residents utilizing such an aid.)

C. The right to choice and personal involvement regarding care and services, including;

1. The right to be informed and participate in decision making regarding care and services, in

coordination with family members who June have differing opinions;

2. The right to be informed about and formulate Advanced Directives;

3. The right to freedom of choice in selecting a health care service or provider;

4. The right to expect the cooperation of the Assisted Living residence in achieving the

maximum degree of benefit from those services which are made available by the ALR;

a. For residents with limited English proficiency or impairments that inhibit communication,

the ALR shall find a way to facilitate communication of care needs.

5. The right to make decisions and choices in the management of personal affairs, funds and

property in accordance with resident ability;

6. The right to refuse to perform tasks requested by the ALR or staff in exchange for room,

board, other goods or services;

7. The right to have advocates, including members of community organizations whose

purposes include rendering assistance to the residents;

8. The right to receive services in accordance with the resident agreement and the care plan;

and

9. The right to 30 day written notice of changes in services provided by the ALR including, but

not limited to, involuntary change of room or changes for charges for a service. Exceptions to

this notice are:

10. Changes in the resident’s medical acuity that result in a documented decline in condition

and that constitute an increase in care necessary to protect the health and safety of the

resident; and

11. Requests by the resident or the family for additional services to be added to the care plan.

NEW DAY AND TIME Opening Minds through Art Wednesdays in June: June 4, 11, 18, 25 12:30 pm – HWC/Mt. Evans Don’t miss a chance to create abstract art with a Kavod partner in this new pilot program. You don’t need art experience, just the desire to be creative and have fun.

NEW DAY AND TIME Chicken Soup for the Soul

Wednesdays, June 5 and June 12 12:30 pm – Gathering Room If you like listening to stories that touch the heart, this is the activity for you. You’re sure to enjoy the lively discussions as well.

Painting & Wine with Polly Wednesday, June 5 5:30 pm – GR Enjoy a lovely afternoon of

painting and a great glass of wine! Polly is a professional instructor and will be here to make sure you have a wonderful experience. All materials will be supplied. Come and join in on the fun!

NEW TIME Music & Memory Thursdays in June: June 6, 13, 20, 27 12:30 pm – Gathering Room Connect with music and relive the joy you felt when you first heard your favorite songs. You’ll work with a Kavod partner who will act as a music detective to discover your favorite music and create an individual playlist. Listen to music together and share stories behind the music.

AL Happenings this month Monday, June 3 5 pm – Gathering Room Bring your ideas for new classes and trips! Hear about all of the exciting events and trips for the month and upcoming months!

Emma’s Emigos Fridays, June 7 and June 21, 12:15 pm (Every 1st & 3rd Friday)

All AL residents are welcome. Enjoy a variety of activities including discussions, games and crafts. It’s a great way to get to know new residents.

Trader Joe’s—Shopping trip Wednesday, June 12 - 1 pm Depart at 1:15 pm in front of West Building This is the only trip you need to bring money! This month we are trying Trader Joe’s at the request of some of the residents.

Sing Along with Tory Friday, June 14

12:15 pm – Gathering Room

Join your friends and neighbors for a fun afternoon of songs with Tory Leviton. Tory

will play the piano and provide sheet music for your enjoyment.

Father’s Day Sunday, June 17 12:15 - 1:15 pm - Gathering Room Warren Floyd Rock and Roller Story Teller will entertain you with rock and roll, folk-rock and country covers from the

'50s, '60s, '70s, '80s and '90s. His stories will delight you!

Don Garcia Music Hour Tuesday, June 18 5:15 pm – Gathering Room

Join us for an hour of crooner music from the talented Don Garcia. You’ll return again and again to enjoy the music. Grand Lake & Pontoon Ride in the Rocky Mountains Wednesday, June 19 8:45 am – trip We will take a ride on a pontoon boat on beautiful Grand Lake. After the boat ride we will go into town for lunch. One of the best trips of the summer, don’t miss it!

Arvada Center Music Program with Calvin Wednesday, June 27 5:15 pm – Gathering Room Join your friends and neighbors for a fun-filled hour of music and fun. Calvin provides entertainment that will make you smile.

Lazy B Chuckwagon Dinner & Western Show Sunday, June 30 10:30 am – Van Trip Travel with us through the beautiful Rocky Mountain National Park to experience a taste of the Wild West in Estes Park, Colorado at the historic Elkhorn Lodge. Includes chuckwagon dinner of beef brisket, cowboy beans, biscuit, brownie and lemonade.

Wranglers will entertain us with songs of the old west originating from the Sons of the Pioneers, Roy Rogers, Marty Robbins, and many more, including plenty of family friendly humor. The music is live and includes acoustic guitars, western fiddle, and mandolin. A few notes: The altitude in Estes Park is 7,522 feet and our approximate return time is 7 pm.

Remember that you do not need to bring any money for these trips, other than the shopping trip.

Staff Spotlight

Syril Newman Syril joined our Assisted Living team in March 2015 as the Assisted Living Scheduler. She currently works Sundays at the Front Desk in East building, and Monday through Thursday in the Assisted Living Office. Syril helps residents sign up for activities, schedule appointments and arranges transportation. During her off time, Syril enjoys needle point, reading, cooking (for guests) and knitting.
