1 INTRODUCTION

This manual will guide you through the connectivity options available with you GapGun MX+. You will need to contact your

company IT department to find out which options are permissible within your company.

A basic knowledge of PC configuration, IP address configuration and Windows Control Panel are required to use this manual.



2 ENTERING ADMINISTRATOR MODE

SHORTCUTS SCROLL

These icons are in the top right corner of the GapGun MX+ handle screen. Tap on the small ‘scroll’ icon to enter the ‘Shortcuts’ menu.

SHORTCUTS MENU

From within the Shortcuts menu you can select ‘User Level’; this will lead you to the User Level selection menu.

USER LEVEL MENU

Here you can see the 3 different User Levels available. Tap on ‘Administrator’ to enter into ‘Admin Mode’.

SUPPORT

This option is reserved for Third Dimension only.



ADMINISTRATOR PASSWORD REQUIRED

To enter the Administrator Mode you are required to enter a password. This password id not to be disclosed to the operators as any changes made within Admin Mode will affect the operation of the GapGun MX+.

ADMINISTRATOR PASSWORD ENTRY

Enter the digits 4 3 2 1 and then tap ‘OK’.

NOW IN ADMIN MODE

Notice how the screen is now a darker grey colour. This is an indication that you are in Admin Mode. During all your time in Admin mode the screen will be a darker grey. Once you exit Admin Mode the screen will return to its lighter colour.

Tap ‘Now in Admin mode’ to continue.



USER LEVEL = ADMINISTRATOR

Now the Administrator Icon has a tick in it. To go back into Operator Mode tap on the ‘Operator’ icon from here. Else continue into Administrator Mode.

NEW USER LEVEL ICON

You will notice a new icon in the top right corner. The small green figure allows you to return to the previous screen shot from anywhere whilst in Admin Mode.

ADMIN MENU

Tap on ‘Admin menu’ to enter into the Admin options available.

Or pull the trigger.



3 GAPGUN MX+ DEFAULT COMMS SETTINGS

Your GapGun MX+ will have been shipped with default settings. Please navigate to check these settings and familiarise yourself

with the menu structure for GapGun Server and IP settings.

COMMS MENU

Once in the Admin Menu scroll down to find the ‘Comms’ icon. Tap on this to enter ‘Comms’.

SPC3D SERVER

You will need to setup the SPC3d server for the GapGun MX+ to look for.

Tap on ‘SCP3d server’.

AVAILABLE COMPUTER SERVERS MENU

Here you can edit the SPC3d server address. The default setting is;

100.0.0.255

You do not need to edit this.

By tapping on ‘Other’ you can enter an address of your choice.



SET HOST IP ADDRESS

Here you can see the default settings and you have the ability to enter new settings.

LOCAL NETWORK MENU

You need to enter into the ‘Local network’ settings area.

GAPGUN MX+ IP ADDRESS MENU

From here you can view the settings for your GapGun MX+.

GAPGUN MX+ HANDLE IP SETTINGS

The default setting for the GapGun MX+ handle IP address is;

100.0.0.1

This address is the static IP address of the physical GapGun MX+ on the network.

You do not need to change this. If you had multiple GapGun MX+’s working in the same area you would give each one an incremented IP address.

Tap the title bar to exit.

GAPGUN MX+ NETMASK MENU

Check the GapGun Netmask.

GAPGUN MX+ NETMASK SETTINGS

The default settings for the GapGun MX+ netmask is;

255.255.0.0

If this is changed please make a note of the new values as you will need them later during this procedure. It is recommended that these values be left as default.

You have now checked that the default settings on your GapGun MX+ handle are set. Next you need to edit the wireless LAN

settings on your PC to match those of the GapGun MX+.

5 CONNECTING THE GAPGUN MX+ VIA WIFI

5.1 OPEN SPC3D6

You must have SPC3d6 open on your PC.

DOUBLE CLICK THE ICON

Use this icon on your desktop to open SPC3d6.

5.2 WAISTPACK SETTINGS

WAISTPACK SETTINGS

Make sure the switches on the waistpack are in the correct position for power and connectivity.

5.3 YOUR COMPUTER SETTINGS

A basic knowledge of computer settings is required for setting up the GapGun MX+. Once this procedure is complete it should

not need to be done again unless there is a system change. You may also need to contact your IT department for admin rights to

the computer you are using. If at any point during the use of your GapGun MX+ connection issues arise please follow this

procedure to check the settings before contacting Third Dimension, [email protected].

Changing your computer network settings may require a reboot of your PC to secure the changes.

If problems arise with connection between GapGun MX+ and SPC3d6 please see ‘Trouble Shooting Connection Problems’ page

On rare occasions there may be other strong Wi-Fi signals in your area. To view these, a free Wi-Fi analysis tool can be

downloaded to check your local Wi-Fi connections and channels.

The GapGun MX+ is setup to use channel ‘802.11b’ 2.4GHz, you may need to change this to channel ‘802.11a’ 5GHz. Please

COMPUTER CONTROL PANEL

From the windows start menu select control panel. Once the control panel window appears click on ‘Network and Internet’

NETWORK AND INTERNET

In Network and Internet, you will need to click on ‘Network and Sharing Center’.

NETWORK AND SHARING CENTER

Once in Network and Sharing Center you will need to right click on ‘Change adapter settings’ in the left side menu bar.



WIRELESS NETWORK CONNECTION

A new window appears with your network connections visible. You will need to edit the ‘Wireless Network Connection’; here it is the middle option.

WIRELESS NETWORK CONNECTION PROPERTIES

Right click on the Wireless Network Connection icon to gain access to the properties manager for this connection. Click on ‘Properties’ at the bottom of the window.



TCP/IPV4

When the properties window appears you need to click on ‘Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPv4)’.

Once highlighted click on ‘Properties’ to edit the properties of the TCP/IPv4 connection.

TCP/IPV4 PROPERTIES

Once here you need to type in the values for the GapGun MX+ IP and Subnet mask.

Here you should enter the following;

IP address = 100.0.0.255 (Same as GapGun Server settings) Subnet mask = 255.255.0.0. Click OK to continue.

5.4 POINT-TO-POINT CONNECTION

For a point to point connection between the GapGun MX+ and the SPC3d server the GapGun MX+ will look for the server at

address 100.0.0.255. SPC3d will connect to any GapGun MX+ with the server address 100.0.0.255.

You could have 4 GapGun MX+’s with IP addresses 100.0.0.1, 100.0.0.2, 100.0.0.3, 100.0.0.4, which all have an SPC3d server

address of 100.0.0.255 and SPC3d will be able to connect to all 4 GapGun MX+’s.

If you have multiple PCs running individual SPC3d software packages each PC would require a different server IP address.



5.5 CONNECT WI-FI TO GAPGUN WAISTPACK

CONNECT WI-FI

Once these steps have been completed you can click on your connection icon, bottom right, to view the wireless connections available to your PC. You should see the name of your waist pack appear with signal strength and a ‘Connect’ button.

Your waist pack needs to be turned on at this point.

NETWORK SECURITY KEY

You will be required to enter the WEP key from the rear of your waist pack.

WEP KEY LOCATION

The location of your WEP key is on the rear of your waistpack.

WEP KEY ENTRY

Type the WEP key in and click on OK. The Wi-Fi will now connect automatically.



WI-FI CONNECTIONS

Once the waist pack is connected the Blue LED on the waist pack will start flashing and the 100M/b Green LED will be illuminated.

Note: This WEP key entry will only have to be done once. Your PC will save the connection.

YOUR PC WIRELESS LAN NETWORK SETTINGS

You can check your wireless settings via a DOS prompt by typing ‘ipconfig’. Here you can see the settings are the same as TCP/IPv4 window.

Please see ‘Ping’ page 33 for details on GapGun Ping function.

5.6 GAPGUN MX+ NOW CONNECTED VIA WI-FI

Your GapGun MX+ Wi-Fi Waistpack is now connected to your PC Wi-Fi adapter.

GAPGUN MX+ CONNECTED TO SPC3D6

With SPC3d6 open the GapGun MX+ will connect automatically. You will hear an audible chime from the GapGun MX+ and the small connection icon in the bottom left will turn green with the words “GapGun Connected”.

Although the GapGun MX+ is now connected to SPC3d you need to validate the Head Calibration file. Please see ‘Calibration File’

page 30.



6 CONNECTING THE GAPGUN MX+ VIA LAN CABLE

6.1 WAISTPACK SETTINGS

LAN CABLE

You will need to use the LAN cable supplied in the GapGun MX+ kit.

LAN CABLE TO WAISTPACK

Plug the LAN cable from your supplied kit into the waistpack.

You must ensure the connectivity switch is switched to the Ethernet connection setting.

LAN CABLE TO PC

Plug the other end of the LAN cable into your PC.



6.2 OPEN SPC3D6

You must have SPC3d open on your PC.

LOCAL AREA CONNECTION

A new window appears with your network connections visible. You will need to edit the ‘Local Area Connection’.

LOCAL AREA CONNECTION PROPERTIES

Right click on the Local Area Connection icon to gain access to the properties manager for this connection. Click on ‘Properties’ at the bottom of the window.



TCP/IPV4

When the properties window appears you need to click on ‘Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPv4)’

Once highlighted click on ‘Properties’ to edit the properties of the TCP/IPv4 connection.

TCP/IPV4 PROPERTIES

Once here you need to type in the values for the GapGun MX+ IP and Subnet mask. Here you should enter the following;

IP address = 100.0.0.255 (Same as GapGun Server settings)

Subnet mask = 255.255.0.0

Click OK to continue.

PING 100.0.0.1

You can check that the LAN connection is active by using the ‘Ping’ command from a DOS prompt in windows. The connection should return 4 times, this signifies that the PC is talking to the GapGun MX+ waistpack. The same Ping can be performed from the GapGun MX+ handle to the PC; see ‘Ping’



6.4 GAPGUN MX+ NOW CONNECTED VIA LAN CABLE

Your GapGun MX+ waistpack is now connected to your PC LAN adapter.


With SPC3d6 open the GapGun MX+ will connect automatically. You will hear a audible chime from the GapGun MX+ and the small connection icon in the bottom left will turn green with the words “GapGun Connected”.

Although the GapGun MX+ is now connected to SPC3d you need to validate the Head Calibration file. Please see ‘Calibration File’

page 30.



7 CONNECTING THE GAPGUN MX+ VIA DHCP

The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a network configuration protocol for hosts on Internet Protocol (IP)

networks. Computers that are connected to IP networks must be configured before they can communicate with other hosts. The

most essential information needed is an IP address, and a default route and routing prefix. DHCP eliminates the manual task by a

network administrator. It also provides a central database of devices that are connected to the network and eliminates duplicate

resource assignments.

7.1 OPEN SPC3D6

You must have SPC3d6 open on your PC.



DHCP NETWORK

With DHCP multiple GapGun MX+’s can be connected to a network and transfer data to a single PC running SPC3d6.

Each GapGun MX+ would require its own unique IP address;

100.0.0.1, 100.0.0.2, 100.0.0.3, 100.0.0.4.

To check or edit your GapGun MX+ IP address please see ‘GapGun MX+ Handle IP Settings’ page 7.

The process for connecting multiple GapGun MX+’s using DHCP is much the same as that for LAN cable connection.

7.2 DHCP NOT ENABLED

The GapGun MX+ is shipped with the DHCP turned OFF as default. You must enable DHCP before you can access any SPC3d

servers.

You must change the DHCP setting here.



7.3 ENABLE DHCP

LOCAL NETWORK MENU

Navigate to Local Network in the Comms menu.

GAPGUN DHCP MENU

Within Local Network is the DHCP settings menu.

DHCP ON

Tap on ‘DHCP ON’ to activate the DHCP within the GapGun MX+ handle.



REBOOT NOW

You must reboot the GapGun MX+ to finalise DHCP settings.

SPC3D SERVER MENU

Once the GapGun MX+ has rebooted navigate back to the SPC3d Server menu.

AVAILABLE SPC3D SERVERS

Within the SPC3d Server menu you will now see all the computers running SPC3d on your server. Your screen will look different to this; you may have only 1 available SPC3d Server.

Tap on the SPC3d Server you wish to connect to.



CONNECTING

The GapGun MX+ will now connect to SPC3d6 via the DHCP network.

The GapGun MX+ waistpack and your PC running SPC3d6 will now connect. When connection is established you will hear an

audible chime. The icons in SPC3d6 will change from red to green.

If the connection fails please see ‘Trouble Shooting Connection Problems’ page 27.



7.4 GAPGUN MX+ NOW CONNECTED VIA DHCP LAN CONNECTION

Your GapGun MX+ waistpack is now connected to your PC LAN adapter.


With SPC3d6 open the GapGun MX+ will connect automatically. You will hear a audible chime from the GapGun MX+ and the small connection icon in the bottom left will turn green with the words “GapGun Connected”.

Although the GapGun MX+ is now connected to SPC3d6 you need to validate the Head Calibration file. Please see ‘Calibration

File’ page 30.



8 TROUBLESHOOTING CONNECTION PROBLEMS

8.1 POSSIBLE PROBLEMS AND REASONS

There could be a number of reasons why the connection is not working each of the sections should be checked to try to

establish the reason for non connection.

It is recommended that if changes are made to the network connection on the GapGun MX+ handle or the PC that you power off

the GapGun MX+ system and shutdown the PC each time you make a change. Do not make two changes at once as you may not

be able to isolate the problem.

Use the command prompt to check that there are no IP address clashes. Type ipconfig. The response will list all connections on

the PC, make sure there are no duplicates. Remove or disable any duplicates.

Check that the PC can see the wireless card and that the SPC3d server is responding to commands. Type ping 100.0.0.255

(assumes that you are using the default IP address) using the command prompt.

A successful ping indicates that the PC is ‘talking’ correctly to the SPC3d software.

If you receive a timeout response then this indicates the following possible faults:

Wireless card on PC faulty or not configured correctly or disabled.

SPC3d server software had been blocked by antivirus software or by a Firewall.

Refer to section later on tips to resolve.

Using the command prompt; ping from the PC to the GapGun MX+ IP address. Type ping 100.0.0.1 (assumes that you are using

the default IP address)

A successful ping indicates that the PC can see the GapGun.

A timeout error can indicate the following possible faults:

GapGun not configured correctly.

Hardware problem with the handle and or waist pack

Problem with waist pack WiFi card.

Use the ‘Comms’ option on the handle to ping the handle. To do this, select ‘Admin’ from the main menu. Enter the default

password ‘4321’. Select ‘Comms’ menu. Select ‘ping’ option. If the GapGun handle is set up as the default IP address select

100.0.0.1 options otherwise use the custom option to select the IP address.

A successful ping indicates that the GapGun handle and waist pack are communicating correctly.

An unsuccessful ping indicates the following possible faults:

GapGun handle not configured correctly.

Hardware problem with the handle and or waist pack.

Use the ‘Comms’ option on the handle to ping the PC Wireless card IP address. If the GapGun handle is setup as the default IP

address select 100.0.0.255 options, otherwise use the custom option to select the IP address. A successful ping indicates that

the handle can see the PC and the SPC3d software. An unsuccessful ping indicates the SPC3d server software has been blocked

by antivirus software or by a Firewall.



8.2 RESOLVING CONNECTIVITY PROBLEMS

GAPGUN MX+ HANDLE NOT CONFIGURED CORRECTLY

Make sure that the IP address is set correctly on the GapGun handle.

If the default IP address settings are required. Enter the ‘Comms’ menu and select set defaults option. This will configure the

handle IP address as 100.0.0.1, set it subnet mask as 255.255.0.0 and will send data to the SPC3d server with an IP address of

100.0.0255.

If other IP addresses are required use the ‘Comms’ menu option to set new IP addresses for the GapGun MX+ handle and SPC3d

server to non default values.

If this does not resolve the issue contact [email protected] for further help.

HARDWARE PROBLEM WITH HANDLE OR WAIST PACK

Make sure the cable between handle and waist pack is secure and cable is ok. Test with a second cable if possible.

Make sure that the Wi-Fi switch on the waist pack is good.

Ensure that the 2 Green lights on the waist pack are on. That the blue light is flashing intermittently and the red light is not on.

If possible test connection to PC with second GapGun MX+ system.

If this does not resolve the issue contact [email protected] for further help.

WI-FI CARD ISSUE ON WAIST PACK

If the blue and red lights on the waist pack are flashing together then the WIFI card is not configured correctly. Contact

[email protected] for details on how to reset this.

PC WIRELESS CARD FAULT

Disable and enable the wireless connection port to see if this resolves the problem.

Attempt to connect wireless card to another wireless device if possible.

If problem persists consult with Windows help for further assistance.

ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE BLOCKING COMMUNICATIONS

If the PC has antivirus software, switch this off and test whether the GapGun MX+ and SPC3d software will connect with each

other.

If connection is successful then consult the antivirus software help to find out how to make SPC3d software an exception and be

allowed to pass data to and from the GapGun MX+ handle without interference from the antivirus software.

If this does not resolve the problem then the antivirus software is not blocking the communications between the SPC3d

software and the GapGun handle.




WINDOWS FIREWALL BLOCKING COMMUNICATIONS

Temporarily switch off the Windows firewall from the Windows ‘Control Panel’. If this resolves the communications problem

turn windows firewall back on and use the ‘allow program through windows firewall’ option to allow the SPC3d software

through the windows firewall.

Note the procedure to set this option maybe slightly different for each Windows Operating system.

If this does not resolve the problem then the windows firewall is not blocking the communications between the SPC3d software

and the GapGun MX+ handle.



9 CALIBRATION FILE

USB FORMAT

Your GapGun MX+ needs a calibration file unique to the measurement head you have. The calibration file is on your GapGun USB device. If you try to measure without a calibration file you will see the following screens on the GapGun MX+ handle. Third Dimension recommends using the supplied USB device for data transfer to and from the GapGun MX+ handle.

The GapGun MX+ can only use USB devices formatted as FAT, it cannot use NTFS format USB devices.

9.1 CALIBRATION FILE ERROR

MEASUREMENT FAILED

If you try to measure without a cal file this screen will appear.

FAILED TO LOAD CALIBRATION FILE

Your GapGun MX+ needs a calibration file.



INSERT USB DEVICE

Insert your USB device into the GapGun MX+ handle.

Your GapGun USB device supplied with your GapGun MX+ system will have all the files needed installed on it.

TAKE MEASUREMENT WITH USB IN

Take a measurement using CP tool in the GapFlush Toolkit. You can use the HEX Artefact to measure a feature. Once the measurement takes place the calibration file will automatically be loaded from the USB into the GapGun MX+ handle. Your cal file is now loaded.

Note: Any tool can be used to perform this task.




9.2 COPY CAL FILE TO YOUR SPC3D FOLDER

COPY CAL FILE TO SPC3D

You can copy the cal file from the USB device into your ‘Calibration’ folder within SPC3d on your PC. Navigate to the SPC3d\Calibration folder in the Third Dimension directory from within windows explorer. Copy the cal file from the USB device to this folder.

OPEN CAL FILE SELECTION WINDOW

Click on the Calibration File expansion icon to select the copied cal file from the SPC3d\Calibration folder.

SELECT CAL FILE TO LOAD

Once clicked this window will appear and you can select the cal file you copied and then click ‘Open’. The location of your cal file will be recorded in SPC3d and it will remember where to load it from every time it is opened. If you have several heads for different measurement functions you would have a cal file for each measurement head in this folder.

This option is to ping from the GapGun MX+ handle waistpack to the PC.

Please see ‘Ping 100.0.0.1’ in D11-678 ‘Connectivity Guide’ for how to ping from the PC to the GapGun MX+ handle waistpack.

PING SETTINGS

Using the default settings you will be able to ping from the GapGun MX+ waistpack to your PC by tapping on;

Ping 100.0.0.255
