A Message From The PresidentWe were sad to retire the tree consuming version of Connections, but with Katie Sweet, our new Marketing Coordinator, on board and
anxious to bring the newsletter to a new level, we have finally made the move to total electronic. More good news; it will be in color and on time. Look for Connections in your in-box and on our website on the first Monday of every month! And that is not all. Katie has begun to design it to meet your needs. Live links will now be featured in articles and the calendar page. Now it will be easy to navigate directly to a site.
Additionally, we will be offering a limited amount of advertising. The newsletter is for news, but with the loss of our paper inserts this is a way to reduce cost and give you a better opportunity to connect with your fellow members. Again the live link will connect your target audience immediately to your site where you can post your message.
Our dues billing has been very successful. We appreciate the members’ patience in working with us. We have encountered few problems but those have been worked through to everyone’s satisfaction. Thank you.
The Holiday Auction, which will be held with the Holiday Wine Tasting on Dec 13 at the Portsmouth Sheraton Harborside, is off and running and accepting donations. The online auction site is now

live at biddingforgood.com/portsmouthchamber. If you have an item you would like to donate please contact Briggs at [email protected]. We are working on some unusual items so please visit our site and bid often and bid high.
An additional parking garage in downtown Portsmouth is up for vote in the near future. The Chamber has been asked by Jack Thorsen, the City Council Liason to the Chamber, to help educate the members on the issues that concern businesses members. We would like to ensure that you have all the right information about those issues, both positive and negative. We will be sending an eBlast directing you to our survey site with a request for you to participate. We will work hard to ensure that the issues are addressed and communicate the responses to you.
Since today is November 5, tomorrow is Election Day. Please vote! I know that it is very frustrating. We all have endured the negative ads, fact checking (we have to verify who is telling the truth), and we are astounded by the amount of money the is being spent. It looks like the cost of the presidential election could be north of 2 BILLION dollars! This is big business, and sadly that is what it is really about. For a country that is more than 52% small business, please let your voice be heard. To vote nor not to vote is your call, but not voting does not allow you to be a part of the solution, only part of the problem.

Member Feature Mike Pagán, Stinson Associates
I bet you didn’t know that nestled just above Jumpin’ Jay’s Fish Café is the professional home of Mike Pagán and the team of Stinson Associates. During tax season, while you are enjoying your oysters and sipping fine wine, you can bet Pagán is just above your head, crunching numbers. Although tax season is every accountant’s busiest time, Mike doesn’t want to see you just at tax season. He wants the opportunity to build a relationship with you.
What sets his company apart from the competition? Mike says that is easy. “SA is in business to help people and to build relationships that will last a life time.” He offers his clients peace of mind and guidance through milestones and tough financial situations.
What is your favorite part of your job?“Interacting with clients and really getting to know their specific situations. And of course, saving them money!”
What would you be doing if you weren’t an accountant?“I would be teaching golf, like my brother. I am a little jealous that he gets to do that, but I decided to go with a stable career choice.”
Who is your favorite Sesame Street character?“The Count of course! He’s into numbers.”
What benefits does the Chamber offer you and your business?“Definitely the sponsorship and networking opportunities. We love the Holiday Wine Tasting you put on and can’t wait to go again this year! And the Business After Hours are always fun and are a great way to get referrals.”
When Mike isn’t saving you a bundle, you can find him in Rollinsford, NH with his wife and two children, networking at a Portsmouth Chamber After Hours event or at UNH sporting events.
Mike invites you to take advantage of SA’s free one hour financial consultation. This would be a great no obligation opportunity for you to see what they can do for you. You can reach him directly at 603-431-7714; [email protected]
How was Mike chosen to be this month’s Member Feature? He threw his business card into our fishbowl at The Seacoast Business Expo! Keep an eye open for the next opportunity during a Chamber event to be featured in Connections!

Ground Breaking
On Wednesday, October 2, the Gundalow Company received a proclamation from Governor John Lynch in recognition of the new programs on the sailing classroom Piscataqua, and for being a nonprofit with a diversified program and business model. He also recognized the Gundalow Company’s success in fulfilling its mission to protect the region’s maritime heritage and environment.
Gundalows were once the primary mode of transporting cargo to tidewater towns in the Piscataqua Region. Now, the Gundalow Company operates two of these vessels, both historically accurate replicas of the original cargo ships. Both vessels serve as floating classrooms in different capacities. The Captain Adams, which was built in 1982, serves as a dockside program vessel, and has served as the primary program venue since the Gundalow Company’s inception in 2002. The Piscataqua was built and launched in 2011, and serves to provide public sailing trips as well as educational opportunities while under sail.
“Gundalows have been the iconic workboats for the NH seacoast since the 1600’s and we are so proud to be recognized today for using the new gundalow to protect NH’s maritime heritage and to celebrate our rivers, bays, estuaries, and watersheds for the future”, says Executive Director, Molly Bolstor.
The Gundalow Company began offering public sails aboard the Piscataqua in May of 2012, and will continue the sailing season through October 28. More information may be found on their website: www.gundalow.org or by calling (603) 433-9505.

“The Christmas Capital of America?” Travel & Leisure magazine queried about Portsmouth last December. They answered with: “If only we could tell Faith Hill as she croons “Where Are You Christmas” that it is here, wrapped up in a bow with fiddles, harpsichords, Victorian Christmas trees, and a free trolley through the downtown area.”The magic of the Holiday Season begins in earnest this month and continues into January.

Be sure to stop in to participating shops to fill out your ballots to vote for the best decorated business door and best decorated door of an historic home.
