Best Wishes! SLTC Alfred FoxEditor

A warm greeting to all of you! I am the new Editor and Chairman of the Editorial Committee, having taken over from SLTC (NS) Laurence Goh following the last Annual General Meeting.

I would like to thank my predecessor Laurence for his dedica-tion and commitment over the last 6 years as Editor. Reading through the many issues before he came on board and through the years as Editor, I must say that he has done a terrifi c job to revamp the CONNECTIONS and turn it into a newsletter of high stand-ards and quality befi tting an offi cer’s club like Temasek Club. I am glad that he is continuing to serve in the Management Committee and helping out in the redevelopment of the new Club house.

I am amazed that the Club is buzzing with activities especially during weekends. Contrary to what other people lamented that the Club is an old man’s club, I see children everywhere; in the swimming pool, the children’s playroom and even the karaoke rooms! The Club has transformed into a club for all ages indeed.

If you read on inside, you will fi nd that we have put in a lot of efforts to organize events and activi-ties to cater to everybody; adults, children and even the senior and retired offi cers, the latter who are important to our Club as they have the wealth of military experience to share with all of us. A beer or two with them and you will be enriched with events and history of the SAF that we cannot learn from books or archives.

We have a new band called “Annikizz”! It is a great band and you must check it out!

The examinations should be over for most of our children by now! Come down to the club with your children to de-stress and to celebrate the school holidays around the corner. The promotions by the various F & B outlets are really great and there is bound to be something for everyone.

Hey, this year’s Countdown at Pan Pacifi c is going to be superb! Make your bookings and reservations now if you have not done so! For those who would like to be close to the Club, the Countdown at the Laager is also going to be a great fanfare!

I look forward to meeting you at the Club and in the Laager to hear your views and feedback on any issues relating to the Club and how we can make the CONNECTIONS even better and also what we should consider and organize to make the Club the best social and family club for all of us!

The night of 10th September 2011 was a beautiful night. Shining stars winked at us below from a clear jet-black sky.

It was indeed an ideal setting for a mid-autumn festival celebration at Temasek Club!

About 7 pm in the evening when all had their fi ll of their evening’s meal, the many young participants gathered at the Kids Playhouse in Temasek Club for a lantern-making workshop. During the workshop, participants were taught how to make a basic structure of a lantern and to customize and decorate the lantern into its unique style. The children went into a state of complete frenzy when the stickers were presented to them to customize their lanterns. “I want the fi sh!”,“Give me the rabbit sticker!” and “I like the seahorse!!” – these were just some of the common remarks one could hear above the din. It was like a war zone that it came to a point where the “commander” parents had to step in to maintain some law and order!

Being a family affair, there were some parent-and-child interactive segments too. Parents were tasked to help their child cut the base of the lanterns. Safety was the primary concern! Children should stay away from sharp objects like the scissors! While waiting for the glue on the lanterns to dry, participants were given a night strolling tour within the premises of Temasek Club. In an orderly manner, the children trooped round the Club following the tour leader carrying commercially made lanterns. It was a pretty sight watching the group with lots of candle-lit lanterns from afar, like fi refl ies fl ying in the night. The night fi nally ended as the participants huffed and puffed to blow out the candles in their lanterns and all were eager to see what goodies were in store

for them in their goodie bags. It was a grand end to the mid-autumn festival celebration as the children left with their parents laughing and happy with their own self-designed lanterns. Many are already looking forward to next year’s event. Remember to look out for it in the Connections and we hope to have more fun together next year!

The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Mooncake Festival or Zhongqiu Jie in Chinese, is a popular lunar harvest festival celebrated by the Chinese and Vietnamese. It became popular during the early Tang Dynasty in China.

Held on the fi fteenth day of the eighth month in the Chinese lunar calendar, which normally falls in September or early October, this festival was declared a public holiday in China in 2008. The Taiwanese also celebrates this festival with a public holiday.

The custom of worshipping the moon started way back in ancient Xia and Shang Dynasties (2000 B.C.-1066 B.C.). In the Zhou Dynasty (1066 B.C.-221 B.C.), people held ceremonies to greet winter and worship the moon whenever the Mid-Autumn Festival took place. It became a common practice during the Tang Dynasty (618-907 A.D.) where the people enjoyed and worshiping the full moon. It was during the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279 A.D.) where people sent round moon cakes to their relatives as gifts in expression of their best wishes of family reunion.

The fi fi teenth day of the eight lunar month was also considered a harvest festival as fruits, vegetables and grain were harvested during this time and food was in abundance. It was also considered a time for relaxation and celebration.

The history of mooncakes go as far as back as the 14th Century. People in China exchanged pancakes that were stuck with slips of paper reading “Kill the Mongols on the 15th day of the eighth month.” It was said to be a secret message from rebel leader Zhu Yuanzhang calling on the Chinese to overthrow the Mongolian rulers of the Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368). From then on, the mooncakes have evolved to indispensable delicacies during the mid-autumn festival fi lled with delicious lotus paste and some contain yolks of salted duck eggs. The mooncakes of today also come in different colours of “bing pei” or snow skin. All are delicious and a must-have during this festival.

By Hanz Lim

It started off as a sluggish Sunday morning as the sky above Temasek Club was fi lled with dark gloomy clouds.

We feared for the worst as preparations were underway for the commencement of the Social Tennis Round Robin Competition. Our avid tennis players arrived early to practice and warm up for the competition which was taking place in the afternoon. Our worries were unfounded when the dark clouds soon dispersed, leaving behind clear blue skies. A gentle breeze rustled the leaves of nearby trees. Our tennis enthusiasts gathered outside the tennis court outside the Recrea-tional Block as they listened attentively to the brief given on the doubles round robin gameplay. Players were instructed to draw their individual numbers, follow-ing which they were scheduled to a doubles event gameplay, over a course of four adrenalin-fi lled rounds on a tie-breaker system. No pairings was the same throughout the rounds and no pairs played against the same players! It was indeed an interesting format of play done for the fi rst time in a Temasek Club tennis competition!

A great sense of camaraderie was forged as players got to know each other bet-ter during the game where they were paired with different players for the very fi rst time. The players were apprehensive at each round as they were uncertain about their new opponents’ gameplay, style and skills. We even had a married couple who had the opportunity to be paired together and strangely enough, they had sworn from the beginning never to pair with each other in a tennis game! At the end of the fi rst round, the players were less tensed and lighthearted banter was exchanged over refreshments of isotonic drinks and fruits.

At the end of the event, the top three winners were announced. Each won for themselves a trophy and attractive cash vouchers. No players left home empty-handed as tennis balls were given away as lucky draw prizes and goodie bags were given to all. It was just in time for dinner when the event came to a close. The players left for home, happy with the prizes won, the friendships made and a fun-fi lled workout on a Sunday afternoon. For those who have missed out on this tennis event, look out for our next tennis competition in the Connections!

n time!

About sixty offi cer cadets from Armour forma-tion visited Temasek Club on 9 Sep 2011 as part of the engagement programme conducted on a regular basis for offi cer cadets from the various formations and arms.

The afternoon engagement kicked off with the unit’s own presentation and talk which was followed by the Club’s welcome and presentation conducted by SLTC Clifford Keong, Chair-man of Engagement Com-mittee who also clarifi ed many queries raised by the cadets.

As part of the engagement, the cadets were brought around the club on an orientation of the various fa-cilities and amenities by the Club’s staff. This is to en-able the cadets to see what the Club, the only offi cers’ club in the SAF, has and can provide for them as future offi cers upon their gradua-tion and commission.

The orientation tour ended with a buffet dinner at the Afterburner where there was more interaction and dis-cussion between the cadets

and their offi cers includ-ing their long awaited and anticipated initiation.

With the happy conclusion of the engagement and initi-ation, the cadets adjourned to the Laager for a night of relaxation with the gigs by the Redemption band and further interaction with the members of the Club.

The purpose of the en-gagement programme is to introduce and expose the cadets to the Club, to en-gage them in their interests and needs as well as to emphasise the importance of their continuous involve-ment with the Club and its activities and events as of-fi cers. Based on the feed-back given at the end of the engagement, we should be seeing these future offi cers in our Club real soon!

Armour cadets having a great time at TC!

20Annual General Meeting 15 SThe new Management Committee (MC) (refer to Pg 3 for names)

This year’s AGM on 15 September 2011 saw the biggest turn up for many years and it is attributed to the enlarged membership base following the implementation of the inclusive membership. A record number of 342 members turned up including senior commanders, active and pioneer members. A welcoming change is the huge number of young members in their 20s and 30s sitting in the auditorium.

The uncertainty surrounding the redevelopment plan for the Club was put to rest when it was announced that if everything goes according to plan, the Club will be relocated to Rifl e Range Road, Bukit Timah, and the members would expect to be at the new premises around the end of 2014. The land area for the new Clubhouse is much bigger than the existing premises, with land set aside for a golf driving range. In consultation with members, the design of the new Clubhouse will be centered on 4 key clusters in the areas of (1) Family (2) Sports (3) Dining and Entertainment and fi nally, (4) Business. A team has been formed to manage this development project and members will be updated accordingly.

To strengthen the corporate governance of all SAF-related Clubs, a “Higher HQ” is being established to coordinate and synergize clubs like Temasek Club, Sembawang Country Club and The Chevrons. This will bring the SAF-related clubs closer together and for more interaction between members of the various clubs.

Since the last AGM, the Club has seen more active and younger members patronising the Club and actively participating in the various activities, sports and social activities and also with their families. The emphasis and intention of Senior Commanders to make the Club their social and recreational wing are magnifi ed by the increasing formation and unit activities being held at the Club. This is a great encouragement to the Management Committee and Management Staff’s in their continuous efforts to promote greater cohesion and to strengthen the Club’s social fabric.

The AGM also saw the stepping down of COL Teo Cheng Leong as Chairman, Social and Sports, SLTC (NS) Laurence Goh Eng Yau as Chairman, Editorial Committee and CPT (RET) Mohinder Singh as Chairman, Facilities Committee.

The question and answer session was very interactive and lively

with issues ranging from Club facilities to services to the annual audit reports, all which were duly responded to and answered by the management.

No Annual General Meeting is ever complete without the Annual Grand Makan and this year is no exception. The buffet spread at the Afterburner was more elaborate than last year and together with the continuing interaction at the Laager and Outpost, the evening was indeed a good closing to AGM 2011.

With the support of members and their families and friends as well as their units, the management is confi dent that the Club will be able to deliver a whole new Club experience towards the Club’s motto of being “The Best Social and Family Club”.

Historic news! This was the fi rst time that Temasek Club was represented at the grand fi nale of the Canon Superseries.

After successive rounds of our Quarterly Bowling Medals, we have garnered a pool of good and talented bowlers to participate successfully in the series of tournaments in the lead up for this much awaited event.

Although our ‘super’ bowlers did not win the top prizes in this fi nal round of the Canon Superseries 2011, they did us proud by performing beyond expectations throughout the series of competition and they did not go unrewarded for their efforts, winning for themselves cash prizes, Canon cameras and even printers! They

were also treated to tantalising buffet spreads for lunch and dinner at each event. Too much food perhaps?!

During the course of the competition, our bowlers had the opportunity to meet up and share bowling tips with the bowlers of our national team, including former world champion and bowling prodigy Remy Ong who is the model of Singapore bowling! Imagine that!

As the season came to a close, we look forward to expand our current crop of Temasek Club ‘super’ bowlers to represent us in the Canon Superseries for 2012. We would like to encourage members who are regular bowlers and are interested to be part of our team to call us or join us in our Quarterly Bowling Medals. In the practice sessions leading up to next year’s event, you can stand to win attractive prizes and also get to know our Temasek Club ‘super’ bowlers better, as we strive together as one in achieving plenty of strikes and high scores!

This is the fourth and the last instalment of our Quarterly Bowling Medals before the year 2011 comes to a close. Due to the school examination period and overseas work stint that our offi cers were involved in, it was understandable that many were unavailable for this fi nal round of the competition. However, there was still a healthy turnout for the bowling enthusiasts who were able to fi nd time from their busy schedule for this fun-fi lled and rewarding event!

At this stage of our competition, most of the bowlers had already become well acquainted with one another, especially those whom had represented us in the Canon Superseries. As usual, the Medal 4 was a friendly competition against one another, as they battled out to see who would emerge the Anchorman of Temasek Club Bowling Team!

At the end, the result was a staggering 200 and above average for the Top 3 positions from both the Members’ and the Guests’ categories. This fi nal competition was truly an intense one and this goes to show that our bowlers had improved by leaps and bounds since their fi rst competition with us.

We look forward to seeing you at our next series of bowling events in January 2012, to continue to foster new friendships and enjoy our favourite game together! A special thank you to the current bowling team of Temasek Club – without them, our interest group would not have kicked off at all!
