It is my pleasure to present the Department of Continuing and Community Education’s fall and winter programs for students of all ages and backgrounds.

The energy of the fall season inspires many people to sign up for a course to acquire skills for job advancement, take up a new hobby, or simply for the joy of learning. Lifelong learning represents more than just taking a class – it is a lifetime attitude and commitment to developing one’s potential.

Our adult ESL program funded by the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration continues to provide quality English language instruction throughout the city. Partnership initiatives with local business allow us to provide valuable workplace skills training to our immigrant community. The LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada) includes a very unique program to teach English to deaf, hard of hearing or deafened adults.

Enrichment opportunities for youth are provided year round through Continuing and Community Education programming. Several thousand children and youth take part in summer camps, summer school, International Languages programs both elementary and secondary, driver education, and a variety of general interest courses.

St. Nicholas Adult High School had over 1,000 students registered last year. Flexible personalized options including Credits @ Work and On-Line Studies allow adults the opportunity to complete their high school diploma.

I encourage you to browse through our program guide and join our learning community!

Step 11 (Inktense) – Apply pure, vibrant dry pencil then wash the pigment with water to leave a translucent ink-like effect. Once dry, the colour is permanent and can be worked over with other media, making it a perfect partner for coloured pencil. At the conclusion of this class you will have completed a still life with apples and an earthen bowl that will look like an old master’s painting.

Step 12 (Bird of Prey Part 1) – All feathers share a basic structure, a stiffer central shaft from which the flight surface of the feather extends left and right. Some feathers, such as the primaries and tail feathers appear evenly spaced, but the rest of the contour feathers are not nearly as uniform looking. Once you understand their basic anatomy, painting wings and feathers with coloured pencil becomes a relatively straight forward process.

Step 14 (Sunflowers and Daisies) – A still life with a bit of zip. In this project the composition is all about textures. The softness of the large field sunflowers contrasted against the hardness of the handmade pottery vase with a crudely carved design. To make it even more interesting, the subject matter is sitting on a luscious brown ochre crushed velvet drape.

Step 15 (Pakenham Stone Bridge) – The best of the Ottawa Valley. Another mixed media project using wax based coloured pencils for the texture and detail in the stone bridge and the vibrant colours of Derwent inktense water soluble pencils for the fall leaves. Large red maple leaves in the front branches and floating in the water will give this project that very Canadian Tom Thompson appeal.

Back to pencil basics using impressed line technique to preserve whiskers and fine hairs. Create realistic fur by layering colours starting with the lighter values of the under coat and building up to the darker spots.

It’s also about monitoring your financial health from time to time so that you can be pro-active instead of reactive. Don’t wait until you are about to retire to calculate how much $ you need; don’t let the banks and insurance companies dictate how big a mortgage you can handle or how much insurance is enough. The ‘Financial Health Check-Up’ workshop teaches you how to measure your financial health and determine how much debt, insurance or investment product is right for you and your family at different life stages. An Evening on the CaminoThe “Camino de Santiago” is an 800 km footpath across northern Spain. With its 1,200-year-old history, over 150 thousand people a year walk the Camino, enjoying the sights, culture and hospitality of Spain. The evening is intended for those who wish a better understanding of what the Camino is, and of the physical experience of walking it. This session will include a slide presentation of the journey, a discussion of the various routes, the effort required to do the walk and the best times of year to consider it. Instructor is well known Camino author Paul Moylan.

In 2003, Paul Moylan walked the 800 kilometer, 1200-year-old footpath of the ‘Camino de Santiago’ across northern Spain with his wife Sandra. Having spent 20 years in the high tech industry in sales and marketing, he found the month long pilgrimage journey a blissful break from his multitasking and sometimes frenetic modern world. The ancient walk he credits as peaceful, meditative, spiritual and transformative, something hundreds of thousands from all over the world are now discovering every year. The journey inspired Paul to create workshops and write planning guides for others who might want to walk ‘The Way of St. James’. In 2009, Paul returned to Spain to travel the ‘Camino’ again, this time alone, spending much of his time maintaining a public blog describing his feelings and the experiences of a 21st century pilgrimage and more recently the book “Camino de Santiago – Fingerprints of God”.

Preparation to Walk the Camino de SantiagoAre you interested in the preparation details for the 800 km Camino de Santiago walk? Along with a slide presentation, this session includes an overview of the path itself, the surrounding terrain, travel logistics, training, accommodations, clothing and overall planning for those who would like to walk the Camino. A supply fee of $15 for planning guide will be payable to the instructor. Instructor is well known Camino author Paul Moylan.
