VOLUNTEERS SAY HABITAT BUILDS CHARACTER AS

WELL AS HOMES By Greg Menza

Columbia, TN Daily Herald Used by permission

Since August, Jan Wright and dozens of other volunteers have been helping build a new home for Jerome and Tanisha Pierce and their five children. (Last shown JRN Connection October, 2008 issue)

As volunteers with Maury County Habitat for Humanity, Wright and others help build homes for low income families who work or live in Maury County.

For many of those volunteers, the experience is as life changing for them as for the families who benefit from their efforts.

“I have found my passion in life in working with Habitat. I love it, and it has changed my life,” Wright said.

During the last three years, Wright lost both her father and mother in tragic accidents. After a fall in a fast- food restaurant, Wright’s father was Lifeflighted to a Huntsville, Ala. hospital. Days later, he died from a staff infection. Not long after that loss, her mother was killed in an automobile accident and her husband was diagnosed with cancer. Again, at the 13th Street Phenix City, AL

restaurant a drive-thru patron complimented Sequoia and Sharita for having great customer service skills.

A dine- in patron of the Lynn Garden Kingsport, TN store said, the food was excellent and it was the best experience he’s ever had there. The cashier, James, was very helpful, nice and demonstrated wonderful customer service.

“My wife, sister-in law and mother- in law ate at the Gatlinburg, TN restaurant and paid with a credit card. My wife either forgot to get the card or maybe dropped it but one of the employees gave it to the manager. The manager reported the card to my credit card company. I wanted you to know about the honesty of your employees. In the world we live in today something like this doesn’t happen often. I commend your employees,” wrote by a patron.

The Union City, TN KFC had a dine- in guest to say, “The employees were great and provided me with excellent customer service.”

A dine- in guest of the Lebanon, TN restaurant wrote “The chicken, cole slaw and mashed potatoes were great.”

“The employees at Emporia, VA KFC provide excellent food and customer service,” said a carry out customer.

“Ashley S., according to the receipt, provided excellent customer service,” wrote a dine-in guest of the Linton, IN store.

The Richmond Rd. Lexington, KY store had a dine- in guest say that the quality of the food was great.

Also, at the Richmond Rd. Lexington, KY store a carry out customer complimented the store for being very clean, the chicken for being fresh and the staff for providing great customer service.

Another dine- in guest of the Richmond Rd. Lexington, KY store writes, “I would just like to share a positive compliment regarding my experience. My girlfriend and I stopped late for dinner and ordered the buffet. It was supposed to close in 15 minutes but they did not rush us to eat and that was wonderful. Thanks to the staff for being friendly and generous.”

“Greetings, every couple of weeks my husband and I visit your KFC store # J716249 located in Gulf Breeze, FL and each trip the employees are extremely courteous and the buffet is always fresh. Tonight one employee named Falicia stood out. While we were

attempting to get refills the chicken ran out and she immediately went to get some and brought it to us and asked if there was anything else she could do for us to ensure we have a good dining experience. Unbeknownst to her, she made our night better by being so friendly, caring and considerate. Good employees like this are rare, so I wanted to send many thanks on behalf of my husband and me. Please acknowledge her for being one of your best KFC citizens.”

A carry out customer of the Effingham, IL store said “Kathy is very friendly and has great customer service skills.”

A dine- in guest of the Greenville, SC restaurant said “The food on the buffet was great and the area was clean”.

“I wanted to let you know that even though it has been a year ago since I was there; I still remember the visit very clearly. I also wanted to apologize for the long delay in saying, Thank You. During my visit to your Benton, IL store I found the food to be good and the store clean. When I left I had driven about 90 miles before realizing that I left my purse. Luckily I had the receipt and was able to contact Shondra Sanders who went above and beyond the call of duty assured me she would mail my purse and she did. I appreciate her effort and I appreciate the KFC Organization.

“We enjoyed the chicken boxes, a good value for the price. I paid by debit in the drive-thru and later noticed an error on my card. After notifying a store employee by the name of Felicia Copeland, the error was promptly corrected. I wanted someone to be aware that she handled a bad situation extremely well” wrote a drive-thru customer of the Springhill Mobile, AL KFC.

“I usually visit the KFC at least once a week and there is a cashier, Everleon Bates, who is always pleasant, courteous and friendly. I got her name off of her name tag and wanted you all to know that I really appreciate her great customer service” writes a dine- in guest of the Montgomery, AL store.

A drive-thru customer of the Dawson Rd. Albany, GA store commented that Shaniqua was courteous and provided customer service with a smile.

And a carry out customer of the Dawson Road Albany, GA location stated Lorenzo Simmons was very helpful and the service was fast and accurate.

Habitat cont. from page 1 “I was in a major depression for two

years,” Wright said. “Mom use to say, ‘Dear, when you are feeling down and low, go help someone that needs your help.’”

Wright said putting her mother’s advice into practice was just the cure she needed.

“It was helping build the house for the Pierce family that got me out of my depression,” she said. “I feel like I have my life back now. I’m happy and looking to help someone else.”

Aubrey Flagg’s full time job is as a professor of geography at Columbia State Community College, When not in the classroom, he is often found working on the Pierce’s new home.

“Every spare moment he has, Aubry is over there working on that house,” Wright said. “He’s even spent several days there by himself.”

For Flagg, helping the Pierce family is an opportunity to, as the saying goes, “pay it forward.”

“I grew up in three rooms with six brothers and sisters in a ghetto in Cambridge, Mass. We slept two or three to a bed,” Flagg said. “A lot of people are critical of places like Massachusetts for its welfare system, but I got a helping hand there. I’ve been teaching for 40 years now, and I wouldn’t be here today if not for the help I got years ago. I’m now spending my life giving back wherever I can so other families won’t have to live like the Flaggs did when I was a child.”

Flagg said he goes to the house nearly every day, and every day he does is an emotional experience.

“Every time I go to that site I think of how so many people are still living the way I did as a kid. It sometimes brings me to tears, and I think I just can’t give enough back,” Flagg said.

Many local churches have been involved in the building of Maury County’s Habitat homes. The Pierce’s home was initiated as a project of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. Gale Moore co-chaired the project of the church’s outreach committee with her husband, Dick Moore, and fellow church members Jane Stephens and Keith Click. The Moores have been involved in building nine Habitat homes. Volunteers from Maury Hill Church of Christ and Grace Church of the Nazarene also came aboard to help with the effort.

“When I work alongside my brothers and sisters in Christ, I feel like we are concretely

doing what Jesus told us to do — loving our neighbors as ourselves,” Moore said. “The families who receive these homes are our neighbors. When you spend time physically working with these folks, pounding nails or moving bricks, and see the joy that they have about being able to work on and buy their own home, you have a whole new feeling of what being a neighbor is.”

Russ Adcox, Maury Hills Church of Christ pastor, said he was thankful the group from St. Peter’s asked his church to be involved in the project.

“It’s been such a blessing to work with another church on this project. We may have our differences, but we both agree on the importance of serving God and serving others. That’s been something we can unite around,” he said.

For the Pierce family, working side-by-side with the Habitat volunteers has been an experience they say they will never forget.

“We truly love the folks from St. Peter’s, Grace and Maury Hills Church of Christ,” Jerome Pierce said. “They put so much into building our home and were also so patient showing us how to do things we had never done before. Now we know some skills that will let us help another family some day.”

“They are putting into our family’s future, and we truly love and appreciate each of them,” Tanisha Pierce said.

Tanisha, Jerome, Payton, Keivaure, Jerayus, Audreanne, and Jerome III are looking forward to their first Christmas in their own home. If all goes according to schedule, they will be in by the first week of December. Greg Menza Columbia, TN Daily Herald

BUFFET CAMPERS To Terry (Jennings, Area Manager)

Last week I told you about the 2 elderly women who came in at 10:30 in the morning and purchased two senior buffets. They had brought books, magazines and crossword puzzles with them, to pass the time I guess. They ate from the buffet all day long. When I left the store at 7:20 at night they were still there, eating from the buffet.

Well, let me tell you what happened yesterday. I arrived at the store just before noon and spoke to a group of customers sitting in the small corner to the right of the door. That's the area you cannot see from the front. Well around 5:00 a customer came in and I was making some corrections on the new LJS menu board when a he asked to see the manager. Of course I stopped what I was doing to speak with him. He said he used to be an assistant at Ryan's and they had recently been forced to close because they could not make any money, and we would probably be next. I asked why he would think that. He then told me to go look in the lobby, “you have people camping out, they will eat all day and night.” He then explained to me that Ryan's had people come in as soon as the door opened and would not leave until they closed. They could not make food cost when people were eating 3, 4,and 5 meals for the price of 1.

So I went out to check this out. There were nine customers, the same one's I spoke to at 12 when I first got there, all still there. Some were eating, two men were sitting there playing cards and two women and a child, maybe 3 or 4 years old were laying in the booths sleeping. They had brought their bed pillows and the child even had a quilt. I did speak with them, I didn't ask them to leave but I did let them know they could not sleep and play cards. They all decided they were going to eat again and got up and went to the buffet. I left around 6 pm and they were all still there.

This is just unreal. Debbie Hunter, Area Manager

This is unbelievable but I’ve seen this happen myself at Murfreesboro #2. Harry (Harris Martin, Regional Manager)

I saw this in the early 1980s in California during the recession. The federal government also closed all federal mental hospitals, creating a permanent homeless population. McDonalds and Carl’s Jr.s (Hardees here) were the hangouts of choice. Allen Underwood

Shante continued from page 1 The Independent Living Program works

with youth in foster care, age seventeen through twenty-one, to help them prepare to live on their own. Shante says, “This program is really good and you can go far with it. I’ve learned how to keep the house clean, fill out job applications, and to be more mature. My greatest achievement in this program is living on my own and learning how to manage my own money.” The greatest difficulty Shante has had in the program is finding activities to fill her free time. Shante is currently employed at Kentucky Fried Chicken, while working with a job coach to obtain a long term position with benefits and better pay.

Shante is concerned about aging out of foster care when she turns 21 next February and not having the supportive services she is currently receiving. DePaul Family Services Youth Counselor Jennifer Mailhot says of Shante, “she has the advantage of desiring to learn from those around her. Shante is fun to be around and knows that others deserve respect. She will go very far with her positive attitude and kindness.”

Shante’s advice to others in what they can gain from their foster care experience is “Never give up, there’s always another door that opens.” By Kim Proechel IL Social Worker, Charlottesville © DePaul Family Services

If your store did not have a single accident, you will also be placed in the drawing. (Prize list emailed to all AM’s on 11/11/08.)

If the store failed to report the accident with 100% compliance with the above guidelines, the store will be penalized in the amount of $2000.00. $1000.00 will come from Workers’ Compensation in CSI as it always has and the other $1000.00 will come from the Manager’s Controllable Income.

couldn’t do anything,” said Green, who was quick to give credit to his teammates for his accomplishments. “Jake Miller, he plays right in front of me and he is one of the best linemen we have. I played behind Tennessee (Vance) last year and he was great too; and with Derek (Mann) at the will- linebacker on cutbacks. I couldn’t force the ball back to him unless he was there for me and he does a good job of forcing the ball back to me. A lot of other guys have done a great job as well.”

Green’s efforts have helped the Warriors jump out to a 3–2 record this year.

More importantly, they currently sit atop the Watauga Conference standings with a 2-0 league record after getting a win at home over West Greene and then going on the road to get a huge victory at Gatlinburg–Pittman.

“That was the biggest game of my life,” Green said of the win over the Highlanders. “We won it and it was the best feeling I’ve ever had.”

Happy Valley’s defense pitched a shutout while allowing just 117 offensive yards against the Buffaloes and then held the Highlanders to just 160 yards and 14 points.

“We’ve done a very good job in the conference at shutting down other teams offenses, especially against West Greene when we were able to hold them to zero points,” coach Verran said. “Casey has been a hug part of that, along with the other guys. He has got to have the guys up front to keep those offensive linemen off of him. Adam Childs and Tennessee Vance have kept a lot of those linemen off of Casey–Joe Guinn and Jake Miller at the ends, those guys up front keep people away from him.”

Green once again concurred that it’s those around him that help him succeed.

“We just all work good together as a team,” he said. “It just all comes out real well for us.”

While more individual honors such as the Jar-Jack Garland Award could be in Green’s future, that’s currently not what is on the fiery linebacker’s mind.

What is on his mind is Friday’s game at conference foe Cumberland Gap and the Warriors post-season positioning.

“I am hoping to win that conference,” Green said. “That’s the main goal.”

With Green in the middle of things, it’s certainly possible.

By Ben Davis Elizabethton Star, used by permission

Throughout his career, Happy Vally middle linebacker, Casey Green has made a huge impact on the Warriors defense – both figuratively and literally.

Last year, Green received the Jar-Jack Garland Award given annually to the Happy Valley defender that the coaching staff feels is the squad’s hardest hitter.

Green, now a senior, led the Warriors in tackles during the 2007 season and he is doing so again this year after accumulating 52 tackles in the seniors’ first five games.

“Casey anchors the defense from the middle linebacker position,” Happy Valley coach Scotty Verran said. “He plays very hard and he does a good job of scrapping and reading and flowing to the ball.”

Listed at 5’10” and 185 lbs., Green plays even bigger than that. He has recorded six sacks on the season and had double-digit tackles on more than one occasion.

“Without the linemen in front of me, I
