Message from Rav Barry

THE CULMINATION OF TWO YEARS I’m nearing the end of my time here in Birmingham, so this is my last Bulletin article as your rabbi. Next month’s Rabbi’s Message will come from your new rabbi, Stephen Slater.

I’m glad I had the opportunity to spend a second year with y’all. I remember how at my first High Holidays here I looked out at the crowd, and felt I hardly knew anyone; whereas the second year I looked out and felt a big difference, that I knew so many of you. Some of you I’ve gotten to know as Shabbat or minyan regulars, others came to my classes, others I’ve taught your children, others I’ve worked with on the board or committees or programs, and with

many of you we’ve shared lifecycle events, happy and sad, others I’ve gotten to know socially. It’s been a very full two years.

The Civil Rights Weekend was a “career highlight” for me – it was an amazing program, and the 90 Years Celebration was also incredibly special. I’m glad I was able to be a part of both of those programs.

We’ve accomplished a lot together over the last two years. The community has healed from the trauma immediately preceding my arrival. The visioning process helped clarify where the community wants to go, and much has already been implemented. We heard music was important, and hired Sarah Metzger. We heard governance was an issue, and we put in place a new procedure for hiring the new rabbi, which was well-received, and are putting in place new procedures for how Temple Beth-El is managed. The synagogue’s finances have improved. There’s a positive feeling around the shul that things are on the right course. We’ve made a lot of progress.

God willing, Rabbi Slater and his family will be here for a long time and Temple Beth-El will find the stability in rabbinic leadership that you’ve been seeking.

It’s been an honor to serve as your spiritual leader. I really feel I’ve been a part of the community, not just a visitor passing through. My personal email address is [email protected]. Feel free to keep in touch there, or connect with me on Facebook or LinkedIn.

I’m afraid if I start on individual thank you’s I’ll forget someone and later berate myself for forgetting “so and so,” so let me just say I appreciate the support that’s come from everyone – the board, the staff, people who’ve extended kindnesses, those who worked with me on different programs, etc. Y’all are great!

Meanwhile, I’m still here until June 23, and we’ve got a lot going on between now and then, including what should be a fascinating interfaith Shavuot program (see elsewhere in the Bulletin for details), “Discerning God’s Will: Revelation and Sacred Scripture” which will include Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Daoist and Buddhist perspectives.

B’vracha,

Rav Barry

Message from Music and Youth Director Sarah Metzger

Reflections from Your Ambassador of Music, Laughter and Smiles

The April showers have finally brought us seasonal allergies May flowers, the woodpeckers are pecking, and the frat boys of UAB are enjoying their constitutional right to bare arms. Spring has always been one of my favorite seasons (it’s in the top four for sure), but I’m especially enjoying my first spring in Birmingham. Unlike my yankee brethren up north, I have not had to shovel my driveway ONCE this spring! You may be thinking, “But Sarah, don’t you sleep in a closet in a zero-bedroom apartment in Five Points? You can’t possibly have a driveway!” and technically you’re not wrong, but this is more about the weird weather patterns up north than my unfortunate parking situation.

I will now take a quick break from writing strange things and take this moment to reflect on the past few weeks. Early in April, we welcomed our Religious School students back from spring break by taking them to Greenbriar for a fun, intergenerational Chocolate Seder with their residents. The residents who were present really appreciated the warmth and enthusiasm of our students, and Greenbriar can’t wait to welcome us back next time! The following week, the entire Jewish community came together for a Yom HaShoah program at Emanu-El. I had the honor of singing the poetry of Hannah Senesh’s “Eli, Eli” to the accompaniment of a classical guitar and a violin that had been rescued from the Holocaust. Later that evening, everybody in the sanctuary stood up and held their flickering LED candle to signify that, as hard as our enemies may have tried to destroy us, the light of the Jewish people will continue to shine bright. The following weekend, our SHUSY board members represented Alabama down in Orlando during USY’s Regional Convention while the rest of the Religious School students strutted their BBQ foodstuffs at the Friedman Family Foundation Jewish Food & Culture Festival. A good time was had by all.

Speaking of segues, here’s what’s happening in your neck of the woods:

May 6 — Our last day of Religious School! May 11 — Confirmation Shabbat Ruach with musical guest Joe Buchanan (more about Joe on page 4) May 19 — Senior Send-Off service Submit the names of graduating high school and college seniors, as well as those earning graduate degrees, to Lindsey at [email protected] by May 14. Include degree and college name, too, please!

Greenbriar residents and Religious School students enjoy a chocolate seder in April.

Men’s Club

INTRICATE TIMELINE WEB OF THE CONNECTION! Well, I can honestly say, after 3 years of writing the Men’s Club articles for the “Connection,” I have NOT mastered the art of writing for the future, in the present about the past. It is April 5, I am writing for May’s “Connection” and I need to tell you what happened at the end of March, that hadn’t happened, yet, for me to be able to put in April’s “Connection.” And … BOOM, now you can see the woes of writing in the “Intricate Timeline Web of the Connection!”

So where was I …Yes, end of March!

Men’s Club had a very successful end of March. We had a “Major March Madness Membership Drive” (say that 3

times fast ), and coupled that with an exciting, very competitive, NCAA March Madness Bracket for all Men’s Club members, which was led by our very own Master of March Madness Chair Steven Altmann. We had a tight race to the end, with Steven Smith squeezing in the final win over Steve Greene.

Where it really got cutthroat was last place, with a teeth-grinding battle to the end! In bracket play, last place gets bragging rights, as well! BUT, if you want the inside scoop on who picked up those bragging rights …you have to be a Men’s Club member (didn’t see that coming)!

That brings us to our March Madness Membership Drive. We picked up OVER 70 MEMBERS! It really was a successful month for Men’s Club!

So, now that you are reading this in May, I have to catch you up with what Men’s Club did in April! Men’s Club sponsored 2 VERY IMPORTANT events. The first is Yom HaShoah. It is an honor for Men’s Club to be able to make the Yom YaShoah Yellow Candles available for every congregant who wants one. Second, we had our very own Men’s Club “When Pigs Fly Kosher BBQ” team, “THE BRIS-KUTS.” I am going to do something very mysterious and scary for the ones who cannot predict the future and predict that The Men’s Club team had a BLAST! How could we not have a blast with TBE’s very own Ben Rosenbaum as our team captain! I can smell the BBQ now!

As you can see, Men’s Club is having a BLAST and it is not too late to come join the fun. Please contact me if you have any questions. You can send in your $36 check to the Temple (noted for Men’s Club) or call Lisa at Beth-El and tell her to put it on your bill. We’ll continue to work hard and be there for Temple Beth-El, but it’s now time to spoil ourselves with a couple of social events. We are working on a couple of ideas to put on our social calendar, so stay tuned!

I want to personally thank all our Men’s Club members: Without your support, we could not accomplish all we do for Temple Beth-El. THANK YOU!

Allen Halpern Men’s Club President

TBE Foundation KNOW OUR DONORS: THE BROOK FAMILY, THE BROOK FAMILY LAY LEADERSHIP FUND

Submitted by Marjorie Perlman

Deciding to write about the Brook family in this month’s feature is nerve wracking. I am past deadline; Larry Brook is the Editor/Publisher of Southern Jewish Life Magazine (why didn’t I get him to write this?); and Adrienne is going to proofread this before it goes to print (I assure you that any errors are Julian’s fault). Finally, it’s hard to know where to begin with a family who has had such an impact on both Temple Beth-El and on Conservative Judaism.

So let’s start with a little context for those of us who are not native to Birmingham. Julian has always lived in Birmingham except during college, Army service, and a civilian stint at NSA after the Army. Adrienne hails from the Bronx and migrated to Teaneck, NJ, before her eventual move to Birmingham. Julian and Adrienne met in summer camp in the Berkshires in 1959 during a Boys Camp/Girls Camp social. They both attended UVA where they graduated in June 1964 the same weekend that Julian was commissioned in the Army, and most importantly, they were married. The Brooks are very efficient!

Julian and Adrienne’s eldest son, Larry, started a Jewish regional newspaper, Southern Shofar, now Southern Jewish Life, right out of UVA (putting his religion studies degree to good use). He is a past vice president of the American Jewish Press Association and has won 15 national Rockower Awards for Excellence in Jewish Journalism. Doug, Larry’s younger brother by either three or four years, depending on who you ask, lives in San Jose, CA, and is a technical writer, but has many other interests including running a Shakespeare theatre group, serving as VP of the Alliance for Jewish Theatre, and serving two synagogues as a teacher and service leader. He is also currently enrolled as a graduate student at JTS. It’s obvious that Adrienne and Julian have raised their sons to value their Jewish heritage and make it an essential part of their lives. Adrienne and Julian continue to be involved in the Birmingham and Southeast regional Jewish community. Adrienne prefers to be a volunteer extraordinaire involved with Sisterhood, Hadassah and wherever Temple Beth-El needs her, including, but not limited to, the aforementioned proofreading. Julian has chaired most committees at Temple Beth-El including house, ritual and education, has been the TBE Board Vice President, and with the encouragement of Karl Friedman, stepped up to be the TBE Board President. Julian has also served as the President of the Foundation Board during a critical time when Beth-El assets were transferred into the Foundation.

Some of Julian’s best memories are going to and returning from Friday evening Shabbat services when Larry and Doug were little. The trip often included discussion and free-flow thought exchanges including community politics. He’s been inspired by Rabbi Mesch, Cantor Ostrovsky and many lay leaders including his father, Frank, who was the treasurer of Temple Beth-El for many years.

It’s not surprising that the Brook Family has a fund in the Temple Beth-El Foundation, but it is interesting to learn the reasons why they felt that Lay Leadership should be the focus. The family felt that there was a need to encourage current and future leadership to be more involved with the Conservative Movement of which Temple Beth-El is a well-known and respected part. The fund was created to help make it easier for people to be involved, to the benefit of Beth-El, as well as Conservative Judaism. As a former President of the USCJ Southeast Region, Julian saw the positive benefits to synagogues being involved with the organization, taking advantage of the resources available for training and development. The Brook family is optimistic about the future of TBE, but believes this is a critical time to find the path forward in a positive and sustainable way. They feel that a healthy Temple Beth-El Foundation is a very important factor in achieving that, one in which everyone can participate. The availability of resources, a strong staff and clergy, and engaged lay leaders is key to growing during the next 110 years. Temple Beth-El has been and always will be a cornerstone of the Brook’s lives, and we are very grateful for that! Thank you, Julian, Adrienne and the entire family for your non-wavering support of our congregation and Foundation.

A Message from TBE and TBEF Presidents

What a tremendous year we have had! The fall included a spirited High Holiday period, when we welcomed the musical leadership of Music and Youth Director Sarah Metzger. In January, we partnered with Temple Emanu-El and the Birmingham Holocaust Education Center in our Civil Rights Stories & Song program featuring Doug Jones, Bill Baxley and Neshama Carlebach. In March, we recognized the leadership of Shira Goldberg (Young Leadership), Chevra Kadisha co-chairs Eph Mazer, Virginia Heiman and Micky Rubenstein (Jewish Inspiration), and Arlene Fisher (Heavy Lifter Volunteer) during our Volunteer Recognition and Awards Weekend. And last month, we brought back the When Pigs Fly Kosher BBQ Cook-Off as a part of the Friedman Family Jewish Food & Culture Fest. Equally important was our successful Rabbinic search process which resulted in the hiring of Rabbi Stephen Slater, who will be arriving with his wife Bethany and daughter Anav on June 15 to become our senior Rabbi. Rabbi Slater’s portfolio of skills are well-suited to meet the current and future needs of our congregants, and the support he received as a candidate was strong and clear. In anticipation of Rabbi Slater’s arrival, we want to lay the groundwork for his success in the coming years … as this helps ensure Jewish life thrives in Birmingham. The visioning process will provide Rabbi Slater with a blueprint for everything from programming to services; however, we need to ensure that the Rabbi and the Temple have the financial resources to ensure he can execute the vision. We will both be stepping down after two years of service this June. However, we are committed in our last three months of leadership to ensure we leave a strong framework of support for Rabbi Slater and our spiritual community. We want to be transparent about where our synagogue is financially. Over the past five years, we have not always been able to balance our budget—while expenses have been reduced, our revenue has also declined. To address this issue, we have launched the Bonim B’yachad-Building Together Campaign, which is designed to provide additional financial support over the next three years. Quietly, over the past few months we have reached out to many supporters to contribute to this effort. We are pleased to share that, to date, we have raised over $230,000 to be used to support Rabbi Slater as he begins his term. We are grateful that virtually everyone has said YES to this campaign. One hundred percent of donations will be dedicated to Clergy Salary. Now, what can you do? We invite you to join this effort as we both have done. Details about the Bonim B’yachad-Building Together Campaign are available online at the TBE website, www.templebeth-el.net, or better yet, contact either of us to say “YES.” You will be helping Rabbi Slater, our staff and our lay leaders to go “from strength-to-strength” over the next three years, creating vibrant Jewish life in Birmingham for all. Gratefully,

Jacob Halpern Marjorie Perlman
