GQ and Y2Q Data on

Experiences of Negative Behavior

The Y2Q and GQ each include a section that asks if a student experienced any of 17 specific negative behaviors directed at them during medical school.

Response options are Never, Once, Occasionally, FrequentlyWhile these are commonly referred to as “mistreatment” items, the

students are asked to indicate how frequently they experienced the behavior; they are not asked to judge whether it was “mistreatment”.

Between 10,000 and 15,000 students responded to the Y2Q in any given year

• While great gains have been made in decreasing the rates of negative behaviors experience by learners, these data suggest that gains have stalled.

• It will be important to watch the data to see if the changes noted over the past two years represent a trend.

• More work is needed to see if different types of schools are experiencing these problems in different ways.

• The AAMC is interested in hearing from schools about what they have tried that has or has not worked to combat these issues.
