COnneCtinGCOnneCtinGFrom the EDITORI am busy planning my daughter’s 3rd birthday party. And yes, there is a lot to consider.

How many children should you invite? Must there be entertainment? Where will the party take place? And the most important question, how much will it cost?

With children’s parties there are limitations in your choice of food & drinks, unlike when you organise a party for adults. You have to consider gluten allergies, overloading on sugar, healthy snacks, and this is only the beginning . . .

There are numerous ways to make this preparation easier, refer to pages 9 & 26 for some party food ideas and a gluten free pizza recipe on page 45.

Planning a kiddie party should be fun. Fun for you, fun for the birthday boy / girl and fun for the guests.

If you are a working mom, you have run out of ideas or just too busy, there are so many awesome party planners out there, let them help you. That’s what they are there for! Refer to pages 6 to11 for fabulous party venues and party planners all for your convenience.

Yet again, we have COMPETITIONS and amazing GIVE AWAYS featured in this edition of Connecting Kidz.co.za! Please have a look on pages 4 & 5 and ENTER to WIN!

We have added the 2013 school calendar. If you are looking for schools in your area, please refer to pages 28 to 45, or browse through www.connectingkids.co.za and www.rainbowkids.co.za. We list new educational facilities on a daily basis.

Party time, bring it on!!

It can be hard to get your child to eat healthy...just look how challenging it can be for us as adults. It can be so difficult to refuse that colourful, sugar packed treats that are so high in kilojoules, but lacking important nutrients. This can be especially difficult if there is a birthday coming up and party to be planned.

Some tips to try before attending a party:Make sure your child has a healthy meal full of nutrients before the party. A child that is hungry when attending a party, will definitely eat more and play less. Give your child a fruit on the way to the party, it will make him/her feel full and help to control any sugar cravings.

Children eat what they are given at parties, if there are healthy choices they will eat the healthy choices. Try and keep the meals and drinks colourful and balanced.

Here are some ideas to keep that party food healthy:oFrozen yogurt, instead of ice cream

oColourful fruit cut on a platter or on a kebab stick

to keep it interesting.

o100% fruit juice popsicles (dilute it with water)

oAir popped popcorn

oNatural or homemade muffins

oPretzel sticks with dip

oHummus with carrots, cucumber sticks

and baby corn.

o100% fruit rolls (without added sweeteners)

oApplesauce in cups (natural or

unsweetened varieties are best)

oFruit smoothies made with fruit, yogurt, etc.

oShaved ice with fruit juice concentrate

to “colour” and sweeten

oMini sandwiches cut into fun shapes with

cookie cutters

oCelery sticks with peanut butter and raisins.

oFruit juice gelatin (Use unflavoured gelatin and

your favorite fruit juice instead of water.)

Have clean water available for the kids. They love water and do get thirsty when they play so much.

Party bags can also be a quite high in energy and also empty kilojoules which could add to extra strain after the party… therefore try and keep party bags healthy or try and teach your children how to understand that everything in the party bag is not to be enjoyed the night after the party.

Babies who reach their developmental milestones ahead of their peers are often seen as superior or “cleverer” than their counterparts. Why is it that we, as parents, place so much emphasis on when our children start crawling, walking and saying their first words? If you have ever been on the receiving end of a pitying look because your child, unlike his playmates, is not yet crawling/walking/talking/potty training, be reassured! In reality, those babies who spend time cementing their foundational skills often have a more stable base on which to build later, more complex skills. For instance while babies learn to crawl under and around obstacles, they are cementing early visual perceptual skills needed for spacing letters on a line later on!

Encouraging and supporting your children to build their skills in a helpful sequence of development will take your focus off worrying about the age at which they reach each milestone. Try thinking of development in stages rather than ages as you enjoy interacting with them and celebrating their individual developmental rate.

Tips for savvy stage parentingc If your baby seems to be taking a little longer to reach a milestone, remember that he is cementing foundational skills.

cYour child’s development is a journey, not a destination. Enjoy the process by focusing on his stage of development.

cChallenge your baby just enough to spark action, without helping him too much. This “Just-Right-Challenge” will foster a sense of mastery and positive self-esteem.

Developmental stages

versus ages!

Fun activity ideascPictures of objects your baby sees often can be pasted into a book and is a great topic for reading. Point to the pictures to draw your little one’s attention.

cMake jelly and hide some small objects in it. Encourage baby to “dig” in the jelly to get to the objects.

cMake a sticky pathway using self-adhesive paper. Place the sticky side up and secure sides using masking tape. Watch as your baby crawls onto the path and discovers that he is getting stuck.Fun activity ideas from the book - Groovy Adventurers.

Shifting the focus

The most important thing is that it should be FUN! Play is your child’s “work” and the way he learns. You may find it helpful to spend time getting down on your child’s level, joining in his play. Quality “floor play time” will communicate love, support and encouragement.

Loving teddy, like most things in life, is a normal stage of development. Teddy may in fact become so important in a child’s life that it could appear that cuddling teddy in times of happiness or stress may be preferable to child than having human contact.

The reason, say experts such as Canadian psychologist and child-care specialist Sarah Chana Radcliffe on Parenting-Advice.net, is that kids learn how to give comfort and love through teddy bears as they can easily associate their furry companions with affection.

Children, says Radcliffe, understand that hugging is a part of a parent’s love. As children, however, they also want to have someone to take care of and look after. Cuddling teddy is the outlet they use to give love the way they see their parents give love to them.

“A teddy bear is also an object that children can channel negative emotions to,” says Radcliffe. Teddy’s are a source of comfort and warmth; they may even be pretend company on a scary night. Parents should be happy if their child employs a

positive coping mechanism. While a child is still learning emotional management, teddy can be a source of security.”

Radcliffe’s views are echoed by Jacqui Bloom, Marketing Manager of Build-A-Bear Workshop South Africa, who adds that most parents visiting Build-A-Bear Workshop with their children often relive their experiences with their favourite teddies when watching children create their own new best friends in the workshop.

“Seeing a teddy in the shop is enough to send most parents on a trip down memory lane. What is amazing is the fact that most can remember their bears quite vividly, but couldn’t tell you what their favourite toy was in their later years.

As far as bonding with a bear is concerned, we agree with Radcliffe and the dozens of others professionals who encourage children to have a special comfort toy and bond with it. We often see shy children becoming animated as they begin seeing the teddy they have designed and dressed coming to life.”

beary important in a child’s development

To any mom, one of the most touching sights is a child sleeping peacefully with an arm wrapped around a soft, cuddly teddy bear. Most parents, however, don’t really understand that as heart warming as the picture may be, the love a child has for a favourite furry friend is an important part of growing up.

Children diagnosed with autism or related disorders are usually placed in “Behavioural therapy” or better known as an “ABA program” (applied behavioural analysis). Through years of research, ABA has been proven to be a successful intervention for children on the autistic spectrum. That said, ABA works in more fields than just autism. Simple principles of ABA can be used with any child (or husband!) in order to produce change in challenging behaviour.

The ABC modelThe ABC model stands for antecedent, behaviour and consequence. This model suggests you can change any behaviour by either changing the antecedent (what happens before the behaviour occurs) or the consequence (what happens after the behaviour occurs).

Determining the function of a challenging behaviourThere are typically four functions of challenging behaviours, namely attention, access to tangible (toy/motivating item), escape and automatic. If you know the function, you can determine how to manage the behaviour. Ignore behaviours with an attention, escape or tangible function and persist through a task. If a child shouts for a toy, it’s better to NOT

pay attention to the shouting. Remember any attention, good or bad, is attention.

The secret ingredient = reinforcement! Parents call it bribery, professionals call it reinforcement! The truth is it’s a bit of both. As a professional behavioural specialist I’ve noticed parents and professionals focusing on managing challenging behaviours and ignoring the positive behaviours. If you ask your child to take a bath, you have to give them something (whether it be five minutes with your iPad or reading a story book) as being clean is not always of utmost importance for our youngsters!

Implementing the ABC model into your daily livesEven though this might all seem like a foreign language, it is instinctual to us all. With a bit of practice we can all manage any challenging behaviour our children come up with.

Author: Karla Pretorius – www.helpingautism.com Karla is an ABA specialist and recently relocated to Cape Town.

It’s as easy as ABC to deal with!

If we plan a party for our kids we have to think carefully about what you are going to offer as food and drinks. People have different opinions on what to serve, some choose to serve chips, cakes and sugary drinks to young kids. The reality is we can’t keep our kids away from it but we should be aware of the damage it can have on our kids and try to offer it as little as possible. Everything we eat and drink has a huge impact on our body function, body maintenance and brain power.

The brain development is most sensitive to a child’s nutrition

early in life. Diets high in processed foods and

sugar (like cakes, chips, cookies) can cause

bad behaviour, learning difficulties and obesity in children. Children and adolescents who are obese are

likely to be obese as adults and are more

at risk for adult health

problems such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke, cancer, and osteoarthritis. Toddlers fed a diet of junk food can suffer lasting damage to their brainpower. Children who eat more chips, crisps, biscuits and pizza before the age of three have a lower IQ five years later, a study showed.

Often the argument to offer chips etc. is that it’s a party and it only happens once a year. But if you sum up all the parties your child goes to, it’s a lot of junk food that gets eaten.

The earlier kids are exposed to junk food the trickier it becomes to feed them healthy food. As parents we should act as role models. Healthy food doesn’t need to be boring. Children at a young age don’t know what is healthy, unhealthy, good or bad food. You have to offer healthy food in an appealing way.

A few healthier party snack ideas: Fruit kebabs (ie. strawberries, grapes, melon, pineapple onto a wooden skewer), Strawberries dipped in chocolate, Melon balls, Banana cupcakes, Freshly-baked pizzas with vegetables or pineapple in the topping.

Raising Children with Love: The Five Love LanguagesChildren desperately need to know how much parents love them. Each child (like an adult) expresses and receives love best through one of five different communication styles, called The Love Languages. Children need all five languages of love to keep their emotional tanks full. Parents must learn how to speak in all the languages:

Physical touch is the easiest love language. All children need hugs and caresses to feel loved and cared for.

Words of Affirmation are very powerful in communi-cating love. Conversely, cutting words can hurt a child’s self-esteem and cast doubts about his abilities.

Quality time is a parent’s gift of presence to a child because they have their parent all to themselves. Quality time is focused attention, giving a child your undivided attention.

Gifts are not payment for services rendered; rather, it is an expression of love and is freely given by the donor.

Acts of Service - Parenting is a service-oriented vocation. Your children need to see in you the traits you want them to develop. You can teach them by example to show concern for others.

Remember, children’s attitude, behavior and develop-ment all depend on the love relationship between you and your child. When children feel loved, they do their best!

You spend the first two years of your

child’s life teaching them to walk and talk.

Then you spend the next sixteen telling them to sit down and shut up.
