Welcome To the Final Issue of Connect orth Devon

It is with a very heavy heart that I welcome you to this final issue of Connect North Devon, a free

online magazine that was intended to talk about local issues and events. It was created for local people

by local people and we welcomed contributions from residents and visitors to North Devon alike.

For many years the team who put this magazine together have worked on projects in both the

media and the therapy fields.

We all have a strong drive to see Ilfracombe and North Devon gaining recognition as an area rich in

holistic and green practices but unfortunately the people of North Devon showed so little interest in the

magazine, and failed to support it, that there comes a time when one has to say enough is enough and

sadly that day has dawned. I refuse to allow my energy to be drained any further by chasing stories and

articles for a community that apparently shows little or no interest in what is happening.

Ilfracombe holds Transition town status and there is so much more that can and should be done to help

us realise the area’s potential but as always it remains the certain few people who do all the work.

Ilfracombe and its environs are ideally placed to capitalise on the area’s outstanding natural beauty, the

wonderful light, the moorland and pretty villages, with a policy of ethical commerce.

We had high hopes of making this magazine work and help to raise awareness of green issues, natural

therapists and local eco issues together with building a following and creating a

magazine that people wanted to read every 2 months but sadly we were looking

through lenses of rose coloured glass.

We sincerely hoped that people would enjoy reading the publication and that

everyone would find something of interest within our pages but sadly that was

not the case.

I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has contributed, read

and supported this venture

Making Changes Making Changes Making Changes Making Changes ---- A Personal Journey A Personal Journey A Personal Journey A Personal Journey ---- by Liz Nicholson For all of my working life I have worked with people who were unhappy with their lives. My first job was as a social worker in the Kings Cross area of London. The clients I met taught me that improving material cir-cumstances was never going to be enough. The root causes of unhappiness mostly were in childhood abuse, trauma and rejection. I believed that psychoanalysis could be the answer. For several years, twice a week I trekked up to North London and met with a wise woman – a Jungian Analyst. With her I went on a journey of self repair and emerged with a very different story of myself, with acceptance and with self awareness. I wanted to help others with their journey and went on to train as a psychotherapist. I have worked as psychotherapist for nearly 30 years I know that psychotherapy can make changes but i know too that on its own it cannot bring purpose, happiness and a still mind – qualities that i now believe can be achieved by combining psy-chological work with Shammanic work.

In 2000 I stumbled in to a “taster” session on Shamanism.. I lay, eyes closed in a Tipi full of sage smoke. The Shaman’s drumming led me into a different realm – a truly astonishing experience! I met animals that talked to me, trees that offered wise teachings and spirit beings who knew me and my troubles intimately – all this is an enchanting landscape that was as real as the one we live in every day. When the drum called me back from the journey I came back feeling sure that I had been away for 1000 years! I came back with a different world view – with a deep knowing that all things contain spirit and that we are all one. From this knowing and from the shamanic teachings I have since received, has come the deepest healing and per-sonal transformation. Thirteen years on I have now trained as a shamanic Practioner and I am committed to working in a psycho spiritual way with people who want to make changes. My training showed me many similarities between psychotherapy and shamanism. Both seek to challenge inner beliefs and release healing; both involve soul retrieval – a journey to recover the essence of ourselves that is lost when we are faced with trauma and danger. The major difference is that shamanic work is work with spirit and with spirit helpers. It is spirit that can transform and belief and trust that will bring the gift of a still mind and an open heart. Without spirit we cannot, I believe, truly find purpose, joy, happiness. Traditionally shamans lived amongst the community they served – they led their people through rituals and ceremonies and knew them well through their generations. Their ability to heal incorporated this knowl-edge. When we visit a spiritual healer now, we don’t share this history. Without this understanding and re-lationship, spiritual healing is not always effective. To be seen and heard by the other is the gift of psycho-therapy and as such it is a tremendously powerful in road to working with spirit. An innate quality that we have is wanting to make the best of ourselves. Within our culture we have come to see this in terms of achievement, and through the acquisition of material possessions and wealth. We have been led into a shallow, empty way of being on earth. Mental health problems have reached epidemic proportions – whatever it is we are doing it is not making us happy! For all these reasons and more we are on the brink of cultural change with so many of us now questioning the individualistic, materialistic ways , seeking meaning, seeking a spiritual path, reconnecting with the earth. Our ancestors considered their re-lationship with “all that is” to be precious – the path of fulfilment and joyfulness. The path is there waiting for us to walk on it! In practice, working as a shamanic psychotherapist has meant making my consulting room a sacred space where I can call in and enlist the help of spirit. At times it has meant working with the shaman’s “tools “and journeying with and for clients. Last year I ran a series of workshops on connecting with nature in a sacred way. This year I am offering half days sessions one to one introducing people to working with spirit in mak-ing changes. The sessions combine talking through problems, meditating, having a drum journey and go-ing out into nature to seek help through taking a “medicine walk”. It is an evolving practice; I have a lot to learn. I work with the purpose of combining the old ways of healing the soul with the new. Liz Nicholson April 2013

POSITIVE CHANGE IS CLOSER THAN YOU THINK POSITIVE CHANGE IS CLOSER THAN YOU THINK POSITIVE CHANGE IS CLOSER THAN YOU THINK POSITIVE CHANGE IS CLOSER THAN YOU THINK

Based in her calm and peaceful therapy room that overlooks the estuary in Appledore,

Sharon Star offers a unique blend of clinical hypnotherapy with other psychothera-

peutic techniques to help people achieve fast and powerful solutions for various issues

and conditions.

“People are so often pleasantly surprised to find that what I offer in my sessions is

much more than they were expecting” says Sharon, “They benefit greatly from the

range of my experience and the depth of my training. I am very committed to helping

people get to the root of the issue, or condition that has brought them to me. I also offer techniques that can

be used in their everyday lives, which increases the effectiveness of the sessions.”

Before qualifying as a hypnotherapist in 2007 Sharon’s work has always involved helping others; as a col-

lege lecturer, care home manager, and carers support and development worker, and she is passionate about

ensuring that hypnotherapy, with its life changing benefits can be available to all people, therefore she pur-

posely keeps her fees at an affordable rate of £40.00 for a one hour session. Regression & Stop Smoking

cost £90 and last for two hours. Discounted rates are available for those on a low income

Sharon is aware that some people who could be helped by clinical hypnotherapy have some misconceptions

about what it is and how it works, which stops them seeking help. These misconceptions often come about

from seeing such things as stage hypnosis, which is very different from the therapeutic and respectful way

in which Sharon works.

Some people believe that they will lose control and that they will be made to do

something against their will. The truth is that you remain in control throughout.

Actually we all enter into a light-trance state on a daily basis. Have you ever

become so engrossed in a book or a film that time seems to just fly by? Or been

pleasantly involved in a hobby or activity and lost track of time? Do you re-

member that lovely relaxed feeling as you drift off into daydreams? Hypnosis

deepens and extends this natural state of mind so that you become inwardly fo-

cused. Then it is possible to work together to make powerful and lasting

changes.

Clinical hypnotherapy is now recognised by many in the medical establishment

as being one of the most scientifically proven alternative therapies. It can be ef-

fective in the treatment of such issues as Addictions, Anxiety, Confidence Is-

sues, OCD, Pain Management, Panic Attacks, Phobias and Fears, PTSD, Stress & Weight Control.

Sharon is also a registered hypnobirthing practitioner. Using the UK midwife endorsed easibirthing[R]

method, she helps women enjoy a more relaxed pregnancy, a more comfortable birth, and confidence as a

parent.

“Being a mother and a grandmother I have a deep and compassionate awareness of the issues and concerns

that can be present during pregnancy and birth. Using hypnobirthing techniques [self-hypnosis, relaxation,

visualisation & breathing methods] I help pregnant women to prepare mind & body for a natural birth. You

really can be calm, confident and in control as you enter the birth stage.”

If you would like to find out more about how Sharon may be able to help you with any conditions or issues

that are affecting the quality of your life, or if you would like a free, no obligation 30 minute consultation

TAROT SCOPE FOR JUE 2013 AD JULY 2013

ARIES - You may find yourself being especially affected by moods and emotions, some of which may not be your own. Now is not the time to get caught up in other peoples dramas. This doesn't mean you can't show com-

passion. It simply shows you need to set some boundaries. React in a way you wouldn't normally react and don't

rush in. Instead take a step back and separate your emotions from those around you.

TAURUS - There is a need here to move things forward. To do this we must first look at where we are now and where we want to go from here. Release anything from the past that is not serving you and don't split hairs over

issues that are long gone. Let them go and move on even if you know you are right. It doesn't matter. What's im-

portant is the next chapter in your life. It's up to you to write it.

GEMII - There is a need here to move things forward. To do this we must first look at where we are now and where we want to go from here. Release anything from the past that is not serving you and don't split hairs over

issues that are long gone. Let them go and move on even if you know you are right. It doesn't matter. What's im-

portant is the next chapter in your life. It's up to you to write it.Think about how your actions in the past have lead

you to where you are now. Keep any distractions to a minimum and focus on your situation then you can look at

what really needs your attention. Take time out from your daily routine to clear your head and meditate and con-

template what is really important in your life. That way you will be better equipped to achieve your goals.

CACER - The course your life will take depends largely on what you fill your mind with. Negative thinking brings negative emotions and actions. If you want your life to blossom into something wonderful then start by

sowing the right seeds. You are in charge of your thoughts so nurture those that are positive and disregard the

rest. Focus on what you want to happen then work towards it and don't get despondent if something goes wrong.

That's life! Just learn from it and move on.

LEO - Emotions are likely to run riot so it is important that you see things clearly and don't let situations get on top you. If your life lacks lustre then it is up to you to find it and get back that joie de vivre you are well known

for. Put aside any on going problems for just a short while and play. Make a date with friends or spend time with

children. Do whatever it takes to inspire you and you will begin to move forward in the right direction again.

VIRGO - If you are relying on others for help remember that everyone has different standards. Don't expect to much or you may find yourself feeling frustrated. The key is to approach things from a different angle. Let those

around around you know what you want by standing your ground but be assertive rather than aggressive and lead

by example. That way you will get things done in a more positive and gentle way.

LIBRA - You may find yourself being forced to make changes around the home. Sitting on the fence or putting your head in the sand will not do you any good. It's time to tie up any loose ends, get things in order and bring any

legalities to a close, especially if they relate to finances. if you get a calling to take firm action then do it and don't

be afraid to ask for help. Take control and this will clear the way for new things to come in the future.

Tarot Scope by Delphine

COECT ORTH DEVO 8

Tarot Scope continued... SCORPIO - You may feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders but sit tight as there is a solu-tion. Set some boundaries regarding what you are prepared to give away and to take. Be confident, believe in

yourself and remember the good things you have achieved in your life. Bring this feeling with you wherever you

go and even if you don't quite believe it, act as though you do and the rest will follow.

SAGITTARIUS - Everything here is about finding balance and not over doing it. Patience is required so take things slow and steady and finish one thing at a time or you may find yourself burning out, feeling frustrated and

unable to change anything. Don't be afraid to delegate or ask for assistance and remember to look before you

leap. Tomorrow is another day don't forget!

CAPRICOR - Its a very important time for you and one where you need to learn to listen to your own inner voice, instinct and intuition if you are going to get the best from what is happening around you. There may be

things revealed that you least expect, both positive and negative. Simply go with the flow, sit back and learn

from the situation. This will stand you in good stead for the future.

AQUARIUS - There are an abundance of opportunities waiting for you at this time. Make sure though that you listen and cooperate with others as you may well find out something to your advantage. Turn any negative

situations into positive ones by negotiating the terms in a more gentle way. Forcing your opinions into another

will not work. Remember softly, softly to catch a monkey.

PISCES - If you are feeling bored or suffering from inertia then why not try taking up a hobby or start a course. Let go of any preconceptions you may have and simply do something you enjoy. Don't look to far into the future

or at the end result. Just enjoy the journey. You may be pleasantly surprised to find that it leads to much bigger

thin

A Conversation with Valery L CoburnA Conversation with Valery L CoburnA Conversation with Valery L CoburnA Conversation with Valery L Coburn

Is It Time to Move from Hope to Knowing?

Moving from hope to knowing has become rather a subject of my focus lately. The word hope

appears so often in so many different contexts and possibly causes us to react more than to re-

spond. My feeling has often been that hope is too far away from me, it’s always somewhere

else I can’t quite reach, and I want it here now as if I know it to be so. I have for many years

been aware of my own ‘knowings’, often trying to justify how I know to folk. Now I realise if

they are my ‘knowings’ then they are from my source of truth and I need explain that to no

one. It is simply OK that I know.

There is so much anxiety in the world, so much fear fed to us through the media and other

means, that knowing something holds a power of its own, it has a strength to it that is empow-

ering in itself. Our own knowing can give us strength and shows our belief in what we are say-

ing. Not to impress anyone that would be foolish, but it reflects our own truth and our truth

alone. Surely it matters not what anyone else may say, because our knowing just works for us.

I read a book recently called ‘Active Hope’ which was all about facing the challenges in our

lives as well as in the world with action as opposed to reaction. Becoming pro-active toward a

challenge shows strength and resilience and leads to transformational healing. Rather than

hoping the situation will resolve itself, go away altogether or that someone else will do some-

thing about it. Active Hope the author says ‘is a practice, something we do rather than have.’

The whole impetus for this could come from knowing what you know therefore setting your

intention to respond. Here’s to our gifts for knowing, onward and upward, eh?

Liz Nicholson – Psychotherapy, Counselling, Shamanism

Helping you to Make Changes I have been practising counselling and psychotherapy for the last thirty years and I am

on the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy register.

Psychotherapy and counselling can offer us the chance to make changes in ourselves. We all have the capacity to heal ourselves; psychotherapy stimulates and develops the capacity.

Connecting with nature in a sacred way can provide a powerful way of putting changes into practice and helping us to truly find our place in the world. I have trained as a Shamanic practitioner and I am able to offer an approach to personal change which combines psychotherapy and Shamanism. See website for more details and charges.
