ORDER OF SERVICE

PASTOR’S CORNER ANNOUNCEMENTS

The first Christmas was announced with great fanfare. The heavens opened, the angels sang, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased” (Luke 2:11–12). The reason for this joy is spelled out in Isaiah 9:6, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called ‘Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Each of these names help us unpack one facet of the greatness of our child-King. First, he is a Wonderful Counselor. Unlike King Ahaz who took counsel and trusted in As-syria to his own destruction, our Counselor is Wonderful, bringing supernatural strength and wisdom to save us. Isaiah 9:4 looks to a time when “the yoke of his burden and the staff for his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian.” This day of Midian reminds the reader of when Gideon experienced a great victory at Midian because of God’s wonderful counsel. At that time, Gideon took a small army of 300 to defeat a far larger army through a cunning strategy at night (Judges 7). Similarly, God gives us wonderful counsel and wisdom to deal with the challenges of our lives. Second, he is a Mighty God. Our God is a Mighty God who not only gives wonderful coun-sel but has power to act decisively. He is not an impotent but nice person with good intentions but a Mighty God in control of the universe. When we pray, the Mighty God answers. I have been praying for one person daily and found to my delight that his heart is so much more open to God’s Word as a result. Our Mighty God hears our prayer. Third, he is our Everlasting Father. Unlike good but mortal kings whose death brings insta-bility, our Father is everlasting, and his kingdom will increase with no end (Isa. 9:7). The increase of this kingdom is seen as Christianity has spread from a small sect in Palestine to a global movement that has spread throughout almost every people group in the entire world. And this kingdom and peace will continue to increase because “the zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this” (Isa. 9:7). Finally, he is the Prince of Peace. Unlike Israel’s corrupt princes who led people into dark-ness, our Prince of Peace would shine light to bring peace upon earth (Isa. 9:1-2). This is the wonderful kingdom that has begun with the birth of Jesus. So why is this King a child? Because his Kingdom is not for the proud but for the humble. May we gather humbly before our King this Christmas, our Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace.

Welcome! We are glad that you could join us. If you are here for the first time, please visit our Welcoming Table downstairs for a small gift and more information about our church. Also, join us for a small group from 11:30 AM to apply the sermon to life with others. People at the Welcoming Table can direct you.

Christmas Baking: We will be cooking for Christmas luncheon for next Sunday. We are also looking for people to help and bake desserts for the Sunday luncheon on Dec 22 from 1–4 PM. Come one, come all! Please contact connie at [email protected] with questions. 2013 Challenge: During this past year, many read through the OT once and the NT with the M’Cheyne Bible Reading Plan. This plan has pushed many to read more Bible than they ever would have otherwise! As we look to 2013, let us renew our resolve to keep reading through the Bible each year. In addition, we will study the “New City Catechism” (www.newcitycatechism.com), a 52 week Q&A study that provides an excellent foundation of doctrine in a year. This study for both adults and children can be studied alone, in small groups or in families, and is developed by Tim Keller and the Gospel Coalition. The need for old fashioned catechesis is explored by P. Mitch in a book review at: http://thegospelcoalition.org/themelios/review/grounded_in_the_gospel_building_believers_the_old_fashioned_way1.

Wheaton Study Break: Tomorrow evening from 5–7 PM, join P. Mitch and family for a study break and homemade cookies at the Stupe at Wheaton College!

2013 Early Morning Prayer: We will begin 2013 with a 40 day series of early morning prayer meetings at 5:30 AM, Monday–Friday and 7 AM on Saturdays. Our theme will be Christ’s promise, “I Will Build My Church.” Let us pray this promise into reality as we launch this new year together.
