A Time of Expectancy & Anticipation
By the time you read this, you will have heard the news that I will be serving a new church in July, and we have learned the name of the pastor that will be at Horne. First, I want to thank everyone who has responded with such kind words. After 6 years of living in community with you, we have grown to love everyone. We will also miss you as we go to a new field of ministry. Change is sometimes difficult and can cause anxiety – mainly because we are not sure what the future holds. Such feelings are understandable. I’m sure that not even God is surprised by those feelings – after all, He created us. However, as Christians, in the midst of our anxiety we have the comfort of knowing that the One who holds the entire universe in the palm of His hand also is in charge of the future of His church. The Holy Spirit has been guiding Horne Memorial in anticipation of this time. Leaders have continued to grow in maturity and ability. Everyone in the church understands that you are also ministers by virtue of your baptism. Think about what that means! Our average worship attendance as of Easter Sunday is around 450. So, while 1 paid minister in the church is changing, there are still approximately 449 ministers still forging ahead to do the work of the Kingdom through Horne Memorial! That’s exciting! The long term trend of ministry at Horne Memorial is a great example of the fact that ministry in a local church should not rise and fall with the coming and going of pastors. Ministry should be owned by the people in the congregation. If the ministry of Horne ceases to move forward in a meaningful way just because I have gone, then I have failed to adequately do my job, which is to equip the saints for ministry. However, I feel that you are well-equipped to continue to do great things for the Kingdom...in Clayton and beyond. Never stop growing...and never stop searching for ways to be better equipped to do the work to which the Lord calls you. Horne Memorial is poised to burst forth into the future in new and exciting ways, and the refurbishment of the Sanctuary and the later building expansion are just two exciting aspects of Horne’s future. But making that future a reality will take the effort of every person in the church, under the leadership of the Holy Spirit. As I look forward, I already give thanks to God for the infusion of new energy and enthusiasm that will come with a new pastor who will work alongside you. I pray that you join me with that same spirit of expectancy and anticipation! Grace and peace, Pastor Ross

News About Our Children
Children’s Programs KFC (Kids for Christ): We will meet three Wednesdays in May for Kids for Christ, with our last program of the school year on May 17. We had a wonderful year in KFC and are so thankful for our dedicated leaders: Tiffany Anderson, Dawn Summerlin, Kristin Forbes, Janette Parsons, Elsa Lozoya, Susan McDonough, Hattie Wilson, Paula Brewer, Erin Didiano, Jennifer Harrison, Beth W. Smith, Melissa Dooley, Rebecca Spell, Peggy DeHart, Sam and Barbara Schellinger, Jen Willoughby, Amy Lomax, Susan Needham, and Heather Law-rence. These individuals have served the entire year with our children and we have been blessed to have them! We will make our teams for next year soon, so please let Pam know if you are interested in serving in the fall!
Sunday School PRESCHOOL CLASSES: We are currently looking for folks who would like to teach the Preschool Sunday School class for June, July, and August. If you are interested in teaching for a month or for the entire summer, please let Pam know. Our children are so blessed with wonderful teachers here at Horne!
Sunday School ELEMENTARY CLASSES: All elementary Sunday School classes will close out
the school year on May 21. On May 28, Memorial Day Sunday, we will have them together in
B8. Starting in June, we will not have elementary Sunday School on the first Sunday of the
month, so that the children can worship with their parents. We are looking for teachers for
June and July (7 Sundays) for this group. Please let Pam know if you are interested. Summer
Sunday School is a relaxed time of learning, playing, and crafting while growing closer to
God. Think about serving!
MAKER FUN FACTORY! The dates are July 10-14. Registration will be open on May 15...check our facebook page and watch the church web page for more information. Have a hankering to do some of the most rewarding work with children that you will do all year long? Let Kathleen Stuckey or Pam Russell know if you'd like to volunteer with our VBS this year! Be a part of the team...you'll be glad you did!

Nursery: We want to say a big thank you to our nursery workers: Elsa Lozoya, Melissa Dooley, Susan McDonough, Brenda Luce, Miken Miller, and our Nursery Assitants: Emily Patton, Allison Patton, and Bailey Smith. They provide wonderful care for our babies and toddlers and our preschoolers who come down from the worship services. Thanks also to Hannah Riley who helps out in Children's Church. For the parents of our smallest members and visitors, we now have an electronic check-in system called KIDCHECK. There is a kiosk downstairs in the Nursery Hallway. It is very simple to check your children in and out and Pam or one of the nursery workers will be happy to help you get started. Here is the website so that you can go ahead online and create your account: go.kidcheck.com. Please let us know how we can make this experience easier for you. We are very happy to offer this extra layer of security for our families with young children.

We are happy to report that funding to begin the restoration of our beautiful sanctuary has been approved by Church Council. We are currently working out details of the contract and if successful work is planned to proceed over the summer to minimize disruption to our traditional worship service attendees. The restoration will include plaster repairs & repainting; woodwork, pew & flooring refinish-ing; and new carpeting installation. We are also excited to report that an audio visual screen will also be incorporated into the design that will disappear into the molding/casework when not in use! There will be other improvements incorporated into the audio visual system as we work out the details. We are reviewing options for funding this exciting and much need-ed project and will share additional information as the details are finalized. The architectural firm is continuing work preparing proposed space use options based on the results of the needs identified in the congregational and committee surveys. More information on this exciting topic in future updates. -Trustee Team
Church Needs New Playground Equipment When was the last time you’ve visited the Church’s playground? If you’re like most of the congregation, it’s probably been a very long time. If you’ve been out there recently, you would have noticed that the playground equipment is old and in need of a significant upgrade. All of the children of the church really enjoy playing out there on the few pieces of equipment that’s left, but those pieces require repairs often and the equipment won’t last much longer. While the playground benefits all of our children, the Horne Memorial Preschool is leading a fundraising campaign to completely update the Church’s playground area. This project was prompted by a parent that donated $1,000 to a playground fund in hopes of getting something started. Unfortunately, that is not nearly enough to make the playground inviting, fun to play on, and last a long time. Based on estimates, it will take about $16,000.
Will you help? Please make checks payable to Horne Memorial with playground in the notation.
