VOLUME 11 SEPTEMBER 2012 ISSUE 9

From the Pastor

For many people the month of September is the time of new beginnings. After having enjoyed the sunshine of summer and the slower pace of the hottest season it is now time for our lives to return to normal. Children start back to school. Things at work resume a quicker pace. Programming starts up again in our congregation.

There is something exciting about new beginnings. We feel energized. We start fresh. I hope that we can use this energy to vision and dream with one another what this new season can be for Emanuel’s Lutheran Church. Like the new notebooks that students will take with them to school to fill with ideas and learning, we too have a blank page to fill with ideas and ministry.

I would like to introduce to you Seminarian Donna Lou Zipp. Donna has agreed to join us in ministry part time as our new Pastoral Assistant. Donna will be working up to 10 hours a week which will be half of what Pastoral Assistant Willie worked when he was with us. Please welcome Seminarian Donna to our congregation as we begin this new season together.

See you in Church

Pastor Paul

Council Highlights from August meeting—

Property committee members asked for guidance concerning Church Mutual's Risk Control Visit, especially involving the location of the pew by the north entrance elevator and continuing concern over the concrete/tree situation at the front entrance. Concern was also expressed over various storage areas which contain unsafe materials, often retained because of sentimental value. Financial report revealed that receipts for July were generally better, and that an offering of over $8,000 was received August 8; however, the next few weeks will incur some major expenses as various required annual payments are due. Council members received special invitations to Day School opening celebration on August 16. Pastor and others met with a group from Spirit of Joy recently to discuss mutual concerns but nothing definitive developed. Pastor will be on vacation Sept. 2-10. A letter of acknowledgement is to be sent to Church Mutual with the understanding that their various concerns are being addressed as time and finances permit. A letter of acknowledgment is also to be sent to our auditors noting their various concerns, especially the need to address some necessary changes in our personnel manual. We have received a possible competitive bid from Dyson Insurance for our facilities; the pastor and President Naumann are to meet with their representatives. Motion was made and passed to hire Donna Lou Zipp, a candidate for ordination in the ELCA in her second year at Luther Seminary and currently residing in the Seguin area, for 5-10 hours a week as a temporary pastoral assistant, such action representing a considerable reduction in total staff hours, to be paid on an hourly basis with appropriate mileage allowance.

From the Donna Lou Zipp

Please accept my thanks for the warm welcome extended to both Rodney and me. We look forward to catching up with old friends, meeting new ones and continuing a bit of Zipp family research as Rodney’s great grandparents became members shortly after Emanuel’s was built. Rodney also holds fond memories of attending Sunday School and being confirmed at Emanuel’s.

I am blessed with this opportunity to enter into the life and very visible presence of Emanuel’s Lutheran. I am excited to continue Willie's work among you and together to be Emanuel (God with us) out and about our city leading services and devotions in all 7 (seven!) of Seguin’s assisted living/care facilities. Visitation is such an important ministry, one that has always been near and dear to my heart, and Emanuel’s does it well. I believe that your thriving care ministry is one of Seguin’s best kept secrets! Looking back, I know that one avenue God used to call me to ordained ministry is through visiting others.

A bit about me: I am a life-long resident of Guadalupe County and enjoy living the country life near New Berlin. Rodney has 2 beautiful daughters, Amber and Kelly, and his mother Myrtle lives in Seguin. Chris, Shane and Dustin are my sons and we have 2 granddaughters and 2 grandsons. My parents are deceased.

I earned a Master’s degree in Education from Texas State and spent 8 years teaching at the Seguin ISD’s Pre-Kindergarten campus while also teaching concurrently at the university level. I currently teach part-time at The University of Texas at San Antonio preparing teachers for the profession.

Church has always been an important part of my life. I have been active in many ministries of the church: the Women of the ELCA, teaching Sunday School, youth ministry, confirmation instruction, greeting, lectoring, council and assisting in and leading worship.

In 2002, a “just don’t sit there; do something” nagging feeling which I had experienced many times throughout my life, reappeared. I responded by deepening my involvement, participation, and commitment to God through the ministries of my home congregation, Christ Elm Creek. I learned so much from synodical leadership training events and in September, 2006 while attending a women’s convention, that “nagging” again appeared center-stage (this time through a missionary couple) to “do more and be open to go where you are called.” That’s when I “Let Go and Let God” (Willie’s favorite saying). After discussion with my pastor, I began our synod’s Parish Ministry Training Program which prepared me to assume a greater leadership role in my congregation. At the same time, I developed a better understanding of the responsibilities, gifts, and talents expected of an ordained pastor.

Upon completion of the Parish Ministry Training Program, I entered seminary. I am now a candidate for ordained ministry in the ELCA and middler at Luther Seminary, St. Paul in the M.Div. DL Program. Currently I am preparing for endorsement and then will move into the internship phase of my journey late next year.

As a called servant of God, I am excited and ready to share my gifts of ministry with the members of Emanuel’s. I am a life-long learner with an insatiable desire to know more about God. The theological richness I am gathering up at seminary is way too much to “hide under a bushel basket,” so at every given opportunity I like to share what I am learning with others. Consider yourselves forewarned, because I will challenge you to join with me on my seminary journey and in some of the related adventures!

This is a brief sketch of my story and my calling. I can’t wait to learn more about your stories; about how God is at work in your lives individually, as a congregation, and outward into the greater community. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve Emanuel's as your Pastoral Assistant, and look forward to wherever the Spirit in our midst will move us. Peace and Blessings, Donna Lou Zipp

Ladies Aid Reportby Velma Huebner, President

Velma opened the August 1, 2012 meeting with a welcome and a prayer. There were 18 members, 2 guests, Pastor Paul, and Willie and Esther present. The members made 71 visits to the shuts-ins and homebound in June and July. Pastor Paul led the bible study on “Food for the Journey” Exodus 16: 13-36. Secretary, Beulah Reiley read the minutes, and Treasurer Judy Campbell gave the financial report for June and July. Birthdays and anniversaries were recognized. Standing committees gave their reports. Velma thanked the officers for providing a dinner to the LutherHill VBS Staff. The nominations committee of Myrtle Huebinger, Nola Kleinschmidt and Lola Scheffel are diligently working on getting a new President, Vice President and Secretary for next year. The ladies voted to honor the 100 year birthday ladies at our Christmas luncheon. Members were asked to submit suggestions on how to spend our memorial monies. In September the hostess roster will be circulated so the members can choose which month they want to serve. If your address or telephone number has changed, you need to notify Velma as she is working on the new handbook. Velma thanked Pastor Paul for the devotional, Tom Engler for being our pianist, and the hostesses. Dates to remember were: August 9 Thrivent Lutheran Night at the ball park. School Kits for Lutheran World Relief, August 15 WELCA General meeting and salad supper. The meeting closed with the Lord’s Prayer and singing “God Be with You ‘Til We Meet Again”. Immediately after the meeting, the ladies honored Willie & Esther with a monetary gift and reception.

A YOUTHFUL APPROACH By: Ariel Williams – Director of Youth & Family Ministries

The 78155 ELCA Youth group who attended the ELCA Youth Gathering had an amazing time in New Orleans!

Our trip began Wednesday July 18th at 4am. We met in the parking lot at Emanuel’s to load up all of our things. We departed about 4:45am. We arrived in New Orleans around 2pm, registered, checked in to our hotel, and then went immediately to opening worship. The image of 38,000 ELCA Lutherans gathered in one place was really powerful. The main speaker that evening was Pastor Nadia Boltz-Webber, and she REALLY reached the kids and gave an awesome message. We were stuck in the Superdome for about an hour following worship because of a thunderstorm that came through. When we were finally released we trudged through shin deep water in some areas and made our way back to our hotel… wet, but safe.

Thursday was our Practice Justice Day. Our Justice Assignment was educational. We toured a working plantation and learned about the heritage and history of the area. The Oak Alley Plantation was incredibly beautiful and interesting. That afternoon it rained so we just hung out in our hotel. That evening some of our youth opted to stay at the hotel and catch up on sleep after our long and exhausting Wednesday. Others went to the evening gathering.

Friday was our Practice Discipleship Day. We gathered as a Synod for Worship and Bible Study. Our group assisted with worship either as communion assistants or those who helped create the altar. It was great to see our youth involved in leadership. The Bible Study portion broke everyone up into small groups from all the various area churches and went through the 7 Lutheran Faith Practices (Serve, Prayer, Worship, Invite, Study, Give, & Encourage). Following our Synod Gathering, we were supposed to go on a photo scavenger-hunt of the city relating to the Faith Practices, however, IT WAS POURING DOWN RAIN… AGAIN! We found a restaurant called The Crazy Lobster and had lunch and hung out until the rain lessened and we could make our way back to the hotel. That evening we all attended the evening gathering.

Saturday was our Practice Peacemaking Day. We gathered for worship in the Convention Center and then were launched into the Interaction Center. The youth broke into smaller groups and went and explored the I.C. and all of the Peacemaking activities. The adults participated some, then found a nice place to sit and listened to the gathering musician, Rachel Kurtz, in an acoustic concert. That afternoon we broke into smaller groups for lunch in the French Quarter and then let the youth do some shopping. That evening following the evening gathering the youth attended Night Life at a nearby hotel.

Sunday morning was an early morning as we were selected to be Communion Assistants in the Closing Worship and had to report to the Super Dome several hours before everyone else. Our youth did a wonderful job being flexible, responsible, and respecting the honor of serving communion. Almost 38,000 people were served communion in about 15 minutes. It was AMAZING! Following worship we loaded our vans and departed New Orleans. We returned to Seguin around 9:30pm.

THANK YOU to everyone who helped contribute toward our trip. So many of you attended one or more fundraiser, prayed for us, supported us, and lifted us up. This trip would not have happened without the efforts of our entire congregation!!!

A story in this month’s Stewardship tells of people that wanted to build a bridge over a river. On one side of the river they found bedrock that was not very deep. That meant the stanchion or pillar could easily be built there. On the other side, however, the bedrock was at a depth of 110 feet. Naturally that was going to be a problem for them, yet they came up with a solution. They decided to make a long and large metal pipe that would be placed on the bedrock, then fill it with concrete. Thus they had the two stanchions to serve as the foundations for the building of the bridge. The bridge ultimately was built and is there to cross this very day.

The writer makes the point that just as the bridge needed a good foundation, so too, as Christians we need to have a foundation on which we can build a life pleasing to God; a firm foundation to live as Christians. And that foundation is our Christ our Lord. Jesus, telling his listeners that if they called him Lord and followed his teachings, they would be like the man who built his house on a rock foundation. When a flood came, his house would not be washed away. Then our Lord said if a person did not build a house on a strong foundation, when a flood came, it would be washed away. And great would be the ruin of that house. If we decide to truly call Christ “Lord” and do what he teaches, then we too will have a strong foundation that will not only last us all the days of our lives, but also we will find our Lord saying to us “Well done, good and faithful servant, enter into the joy of your Master.” Prayer: Dear Lord, please be our Foundation and our Support as we strive to love and serve you all the days of our lives. Amen

Habitat for Humanity International based in Atlanta, Georgia, is a worldwide nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry that builds and sells homes in partnership with low income families.

Guadalupe Valley Habitat for Humanity (GVHFH) was established  in 1993 with a mission to  improve our community by building new homes with God’s people in need so families can live and grow into all that He intended. Once built, homes are sold to families with a 20 to 30 year no interest loan.

With  volunteer  help, GVHFH  builds modest,  adequate,  and  energy‐efficient  homes. Habitat  provides  a “hand up” and not a “hand out” by requiring prospective owners 18 and over to put in 200 hours “sweat equity” building their own home.

After  construction  is  complete,  GVHFH  provides  a  volunteer mentor  to  help  new  homeowners  with practical issues such as budgeting, home maintenance and any other concerns which may arise that could interfere with their becoming responsible homeowners.

GVHFH has built 15 homes and will complete its 16th home this fall. By selling homes to families who were formerly  renters, Habitat has added  to  the  community’s  tax base and helped  revitalize neighborhoods. More important, Habitat has given families an opportunity to break the poverty cycle, take pride in home ownership, raise their children in a safe home, and reach their highest potential.
