FROM THE RABBI

Two Adars1 are better than one, So let’s get to it and have some great CBS fun! To smile and laugh and have a good time, And so this whole drash2 will be written in rhyme.

With two Megillah3 readings that will steal the show, And as Irving says, “Don’t forget the

minyan, now Go, Go, Go!” Purim is coming with groggers, karaoke and hamantashen too, So we give three cheers for Esther, Mordechai, and the Jews.

A little study each day keeps the doldrums away, At least that’s what my professors at JTS4 used to say. So we are learning together the wisdom of Talmud Berachot5, And Jewish ethics and values filled with hope.

Snowbirds have trekked north from their winter hiding places, Filling up the shul with their warm (and tan?) smiling faces. The best is yet to come with our Purim celebration, Come one, come all6 from every generation.

Two Adars are really better than one, With something to do for everyone. Alas, it is now time for me to bid you shalom, But always remember CBS is your home.

Purim Sameach! – Happy Purim!

Fun Facts 1 The Hebrew month of Adar is a time for rejoicing. The Talmud states that, “When Adar enters, joy increases!” In the Hebrew calendar, a second month of Adar (a 13th month) is added seven times every nineteen years to bring the lunar calendar into alignment with the solar calendar, thereby keeping holidays in their respective seasons.

2 Drash is a Hebrew term which literally means to “search out the sense of” or to “seek to understand” the sacred text. Gen-erally however the term refers to interpre-tation and creative expansion of sacred texts usually in the form of a sermon or story.

3 Megillah is a term used for the 5 books (scrolls) from the Writings (Ketuvim) section of the Bible (TaNaKh) read aloud in synagogue. The five scrolls are Esther, Ruth, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs, and Lamentations. Most people however associate the megillat Esther or jokingly as the whole gansa megillah!

4 JTS is the acronym for the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, the main professional school training Conservative rabbis, cantors, Jewish educators, doctoral students and in conjunction with Columbia/Barnard undergraduate students. JTS houses the largest Jewish library outside of the land of Israel. It is located in Morningside Heights in the upper west side of New York City. For more info., stop in and see me.

5 Talmud Berachot – The Talmud is a combination of the early writings of the Rabbis in the land of Israel (Mishnah - Tannaim) and the later Rabbis of Babylonia (Gemara - Amoraim) Talmud Berachot is exciting because it contains the beginnings of our prayer service and the formation of the beracha or blessing pattern – Baruch Atah etc. Including the Birkat HaMazon (Grace after Meals) and prayer over bread, wine and other food types.

6 We are blessed to be joined again this year by B’nai Abraham and Am Haskalah!

Second Progress Report on Congregation Brith

Sholom’s 30th Anniversary

Campaign: (March 1, 2016)

One month ago, I reported to you that as a result of the Congre-

gation’s very positive response to the request for pledges, the

30th Anniversary Campaign had gotten off to an exceptionally strong start. I am very pleased to tell you that as of the end of

February, we have received more than 50 pledges, for a total of

$155,000, from members of the Congregation.

The progress on writing the new Torah has also continued, and

on Sunday, March 6, a section of the new Torah will be used for

the first of four letter-fill in ceremonies at Brith Sholom. On that

day, fifteen of the Brith Sholom families who have made pledges

to the campaign will fill-in the missing letters in the first section of the Torah. Additional fill-in ceremonies, scheduled for April

10, May 22 and June 5, will provide opportunities for the remain-

ing contributors to fill-in missing letters in other sections of the

Torah.

So far, close to one third of the Congregation has made pledges,

but the goal is to have 100 percent participation, with no contri-

bution being too small. The 613th commandment tells us to “Participate in the writing of a Sefer Torah”. This is your oppor-

tunity to become involved in a truly sacred experience, which for

most of us will be a once-in-a-lifetime event.

For those of you who have already made a pledge to the

campaign, we thank you so much for your generous commitment

to Brith Sholom.

If you’ve not yet made a pledge, please contact me or contact the

Brith Sholom Office (610-866-8009) to tell Tammy you wish to

participate in the campaign. Your contribution will be used to

help fund the writing of our new Torah and the restoration of the

buildings which house our beautiful sanctuary and chapel.

Best wishes,

Ed Levy,

Ron and Ann Gould were looking for a place to move to from Pisburgh in order to be near their daughter and her family, who

live in New Jersey. "We researched it!" Ann says. They discovered Bethlehem and Brith Sholom, both of which have exceed-

ed their expecta'ons. Both are re'red, with Ann having worked as a wound care nurse and Ron as a textbook salesman.

They have long been ac've in synagogue life and look forward to ge)ng more involved here. To seal the deal, they say they have

already found other Steelers fans, which keeps them from feeling "adri*," and they don't plan to let go of their Penguins and Pi-

rates teams, either. Ron is a great sports fan, in addi'on to enjoying walking and reading. "He'll talk about sports forever and he's

really knowledgeable," says Ann. "I play Mahjong and I'm looking for a game!" If you know of one, or just to say hi, look for Ann

and Ron at Kiddush.

Hester Street, tells the story of Jewish immigrants who come to the Lower East side in 1896 from Europe, as did so many of our ancestors. So, it is the familiar story of the evolution of cul-tures, ambition, sex roles and religious traditions. Familiar, yet special for as Wikipedia says "The film is noteworthy for its detailed reconstruction of Jewish immigrant life in New York at the turn of the century—much of the dialogue is delivered in Yiddish with English subtitles—...In addition, Carol Kane's lead character posed a still-provocative synthesis as she discovers her own self-assertion on behalf of her right to maintain a traditional identity in an aggressively modern setting." This is a good movie to share with teens who might be less fa-miliar with this aspect of Jewish history.
