Dear Parishioners,
I am so excited because May is here and, as you know, May is the Month of Mary! The Blessed Virgin Mary is the Mother of the Church and therefore the example, as well as the guide and inspiration, of everyone who seeks to be the servant of God. Mary is the Daughter of God the Father, the Mother of God the Son and the Mystical Spouse of the Holy Spirit. She is the Queen of the Angels, the saints, and of heaven and earth.
Mary, our most beautiful mom, brings joy to our hearts. It is not a coincidence that this month, dedicated to Mary, is during the Spring season, when the birds are singing, the sun is shining, and all things are growing.
When we truly love somebody, then we want to get to know them better, follow them more closely and imitate their virtues. So let us spend this month showing our love and appreciation to our Mama Mary. Start today, by praying the rosary on your own or join us 30 minutes before one of our weekend Masses. Think positive, enjoy the new life all around us and look up through Mary to her Son!
Fr. Greg Skowron, Pastor
Prayer to Mary for the Grace of Love O Mary, my dear Mother, how much I Iove thee! And yet in reality how little! Thou dost teach me what I ought to know, for thou teachest me what Jesus is to me and what I ought to be for Jesus. Dearly beloved Mother, how close to God thou art, and how utterly filled with Him! In the measure that we know God, we remind ourselves of thee. Mother of God, obtain for me the grace of loving my Jesus; obtain for me the grace of loving thee!

A Gardening Tip There is an old adage that tells us that “April showers bring May flowers.” God’s grace can be compared to the welcome spring rains, but only if the heart is not “hardened” to His gifts for us. Henri Nouwen once wrote “I still remember an evening meditation on Dutch television during which the speaker poured water on hard, dried-out soil, saying, “Look, the soil cannot receive the water and no seed can grow.” Then, after crumbling the soil with his hands and pouring water on it again, he said, “It is only the broken soil that can receive the water and make the seed grow and bear fruit.” After seeing this I understood what is meant to pray in front of the Eucharist with a contrite heart, a heart broken open, to receive the water of God’s grace.”
Come to the Adoration Chapel and watch yourself grow. To sign up for an adoration hour, please email us at [email protected] or contact Mary Lewis at 630-941-9173 or Joan Taylor at 630-530-8963.

MASS INTENTIONS
“Spiraling out of control,” is a phrase that can easily describe the current display of human existence. In addition to the violence, unrest, uneasiness and turmoil that are common elements of our daily news, other essential pieces are misplaced or missing. Many lack an objective center around which to order and structure their lives or a clear set of definable goals or mores to act as guideposts and life directives. It appears that “feelings” have become a “new god” and traditional structures and ideals set aside. It is almost as if history only shows that we got this whole thing wrong and many are determined to finally set things right. The real truth, however, is that while wrongs and errors are certainly a part of our often-checkered past, it is hardly the case that all was wrong. It is not our task to rewrite the history of our lives, but to learn from mistakes that were made, and preserve the perennial wisdom at the root of our successes. Learning is an essential part of being human. The question becomes, however, from whom do we learn? Some have such a hard time placing God in that position, but that is precisely where God needs to be. God is the Master Teacher from whom all of humanity learns and gets its cues. It is in and through this relationship with the Gardener of Life that we are fashioned and pruned into the people we are intended to be and can be. It is only in God that we are able to find our best selves. Sadly, many think that religion too, as well as history in general, has also gotten all this wrong. Yet, our resurrection faith tells us differently. We are reminded, today especially, that we are meant to remain in Christ as Christ remains in us. We are also reminded that Jesus, the Incarnate God, is the vine upon which we grow, the branches that flow from the source of God’s life. Giving up our will to God’s can be a painful endeavor. It is not easy to set our own desires and wants aside and allow God to step in and direct and guide our growth. But this is the only way to prevent deadly weeds from overtaking us and bringing us to a place of self-destruction. God’s commandments are the very guideposts and benchmarks we need, yet many seek to remove them from all public view because they appear to limit self-expression and suppress what is considered by many to be “human freedom.” They are the only way we can find freedom, however. And, until we learn this fundamental lesson, we will continue to spiral out of control, never really knowing who we are, what our potential can be or how life really can be lived. We will not know peace.

Spiritual Adoption Campaign
SPIRITUAL ADOPTION—40 WEEKS—2021
Week 6—May 1-2, 2021
“It is six weeks since my life began. My head is
taking shape, and my digestive tract is in
formation. The cluster of cells that will become my
testes or ovaries is also forming. Won’t my mommy
and daddy be surprised when the doctor exclaims,
‘It’s a boy!’ or ‘It’s a girl!?’ This week the umbilical
cord that is a life-line from mommy to me is in
place and my heart is beating at 138 beats per
minute. I am so excited to be here!”
Spiritual Adoption Prayer Lord Jesus, you said, “let the children come to me.” (Matthew 19:14) Therefore, with deep trust in your infinite mercy, I bring _________________, the child that I have spiritually adopted and who is at risk of being aborted, to your Sacred Heart this day. Please grant that the parents of this child may quickly come to the realization that this new life is not an inconvenience or a burden, but a child; their child, their own flesh and blood. Give them the courage, strength and guidance they need to embrace this child and to choose life! Amen.
GOOD NEWS! By popular demand, the Crypt of the Saints will be open on Sundays starting May 9, from 6 AM until 1 PM. Volunteers are needed to keep it open every Sunday: 90 minute time commitments are necessary. If interested, please call Bing Zamar at 630-341-7013 to sign up.
Our newest items are Holy Cards with Patron Saint Medals for over 40 occupations—all free of charge.
Thousands of saints and their relics are awaiting your prayers and devotions and veneration.
Social distancing will be observed and masks are required and available upon entering.
Thank you! Richard Montalbano

Is gossip a mortal sin?
To really ask this question, we must consider the Eighth Commandment: “You shall not bear false witness.” In its reflections on this commandment, The Catechism of the Catholic Church invites us to not only think about what bearing “false witness” means, but to also consider how we understand the truth and how we communicate more broadly. This is why so much of this section of the Catechism has to do with the gift of language. With this in mind, we will notice that the word “gossip” isn’t used by the Catechism. Instead, we find the words “detraction” and “calumny,” which are actually two forms that gossip can take, and both can be quite serious.
First, detraction is the of revealing “another’s faults and failings to persons who did not know them,” without morally valid reasons. Calumny, by extension, is saying something about another person that is untrue, and it is sinful because it “harms the reputation of others and gives occasion for false judgements” (see no. 2477). In all of our communication, we have to always recognize that we have a moral obligation to the truth and to always work to protect the reputation and honor of our neighbors (see no. 2479).
Gossip can, in fact, prove to be a very serious sin. After all, the Catechism reminds us: “No one is bound to reveal the truth to someone who does not have the right to know it” (no. 2489). When we have gossiped, especially if we are aware we have damaged another person’s good name or reputation, we want to make every effort to undo the damage we have done, including seeking the grace and forgiveness offered in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

The Question of Authority (Article 20)
In our exploration of the development of authority and leadership structures in the early Church, last week we finished looking at the seven letters of bishop Ignatius of Antioch (in Syria), written circa 115 AD to churches in western Asia Minor (now Turkey) and to Rome. These letters revealed an important shift in the authority structure in some churches, from a conciliar leadership shared by equal presbyter-bishops to a more hierarchical structure with one bishop presiding over a council of presbyters and a group of deacons. By the year 115 AD this was certainly the case for Ignatius’ church of Antioch and for those in Asia Minor, but we learned that it was not yet the case for the church in Rome, nor for the churches in Greece. At what point did the churches in Rome and Greece shift to the mono-episcopate structure that was the norm in Syria and Asia Minor? This week we’ll explore some writings from the middle of the 2nd century that shed some light on this. St. Justin Martyr was a Gentile born in Samaria (near Israel) during the early part of the 2nd century. As a young man he studied many different Greek philosophers, but when he learned about Christianity he recognized it as the true wisdom he was seeking. He became a Christian and spent
the rest of his life teaching the faith to others, eventually founding a school in Rome. About the year 155 AD, Justin wrote his First Apology, which was a defense of the Christian faith against the misunderstandings and false accusations of the Romans. He was ultimately martyred in Rome circa 165 AD, in the persecution under Emperor Marcus Aurelius. One of the accusations made against Christians by their pagan neighbors was that they were cannibals, who at their religious rituals sacrificed a child and ate its body. Because this was obviously a slanderous account of the Eucharist, Justin took it upon himself in his First Apology to give a true description of this central Christian ritual. Justin’s description is one of the earliest accounts of the weekly celebration of the Eucharist, and it is remarkable how many of its elements are still seen today in the Mass (as I’ve indicated below in parentheses): “On the day called Sunday there is a meeting in one place…and the memoirs of the apostles (Gospels & Letters of Paul) or the writings of the prophets (Old Testament) are read as long as time permits. When the reader has finished, the one presiding, in a discourse (Homily), urges and invites us to the imitation of these noble things. Then we all stand together and offer prayers (Petitions)…and we greet each other with a kiss (Sign of Peace.) Next the bread and wine and water are brought to the one presiding (Presentation of the Gifts), and taking them he sends up praise and glory to the Father of the universe through the name of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, to the best of his ability (Eucharistic Prayer), and the congregation assents, saying ‘Amen’. Those whom we call deacons give to each of those present a portion of the consecrated bread and wine (Communion), and they take it to those who are absent. Those who so wish, contribute, each one as much as he chooses (Collection). What is collected is deposited with the presider, and he takes care of orphans and widows and those who are in want on account of any other cause, and those who are in bonds, and the strangers sojourning among us.” (65-67) In this description of the celebration of the Eucharist in Rome circa 150 AD, Justin does not use the title episkopos (bishop) for “the one who presides”, but it is probable that by this point the one(s) who presided over the community (the presbyter-bishops) also presided over the celebration of the Eucharist.

SISTER STORY
May Crowning with Sister The Visitation first graders annually participated in their own May Crowning Ceremony for many years. This tradition was to be a holy experience. The students managed the ceremony. Readings were practiced, songs were perfected, and prayers were recited. in by the children adornRosaries and flowers brought ed Mary’s altar. Mary’s crown, made by two first graders years ago, was affixed to Mary’s veil. One spring, Sister said, “Can I come to the May Crowning?” Being well aware of Sister’s enduring love for Mary, we were touched that her request was a question. Sister arrived promptly to the ceremony eager to begin. She did not attend as an observer and participated right along with the students. Her engagement in the service was heartfelt and genuine. The children were remarkable. Being in the presence of such an inspirational figure spurred them on to a meaningful “AMEN!” The familiar melody of “Immaculate Mary!” never sounded more spectacular. Sister thanked the first graders for their beautiful prayers and quietly left to continue the school day. Sister Thomas Leo was devoted to Visitation Catholic School. Her legacy, memory, and virtuous soul will live on. Go Vikings! Cindy Burke & Jill Martino Longtime Visitation teachers SISTER STORY We encourage anyone to submit a memory of STL to share.
