1 Newsletter No. 8 - Term 1Week 9 Thursday 24 March 2016 From the Principal…………….. The end of this term has come so quickly! It has certainly been a very full term, with information days, 3-Way Conferences, our Quality Beginning Program, sports carnivals and, of course, lots of school work. Coming up very quickly in Term 2 will be our Open Night. This year, Open Night will be on Monday 2 nd May from 5:00 7:30pm. There will be lots of things to see and do, the most special, of course, is looking at your child’s work. We hope to see everybody there. On Wednesday, 4 th May we have the 2017 Foundation Information Night at 7:00pm. If you know anybody who is looking for a school for next year, please let them know about the date and also let them know that they can ring us any time for an appointment for a personal tour. All Maroondah schools ask that 2017 Foundation students be enrolled before the end of Term 2. Congratulations Steve Harvey On Tuesday last week, I attended the MCG with Steve Harvey for a special lunch for the 2015 Victorian School Sports Awards. Our very own Mr Harvey received the Outstanding School and Community Partnerships Award. This is a very prestigious award because it reflects the effort to which Steve goes, to give us a wonderful sports program. Steve goes to great lengths to include the local sporting clubs in our program so that our children can experience different sports and activities that will keep them healthy and strong. Thank you, Steve, for all your hard work with our sporting program. I wish everyone a very safe and happy holiday, and we’ll see everyone back here on Monday, 11 th April. GAIL POLLARD PRINCIPAL

The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and Kalinda Primary School is excited to be participating. The Privacy and Consent form and further information was sent out via Compass last Monday. The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to 16 years in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by the closing date of the challenge. Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books. If you would like your child to participate, please return the Privacy and Consent form sent out through Compass last Monday. If you are unable to access this form, spare forms are available at the school office. All children who meet the Challenge will receive a Certificate of Achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and can choose to have their name included on the online Honour Roll. For more information about the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge and to view the booklists, visit: www.education.vic.gov.au/prc

A reminder to all children and families to continue using sun protection

throughout the term break and for a few weeks in Term 2. UV levels are still above three so please continue to Slip on sun protective clothing, Slop on SPF 30 or higher sunscreen, Slap on a wide brimmed hat, Seek shade and, if practical, Slide on wrap-around sunglasses until the end of April. Please check the daily sun protection times to be sure. These are available on the free SunSmart app and widget, in the weather section of the newspaper or at sunsmart.com.au Even in the cooler Autumn weather, that UV exposure all adds up.
