Critique: May 9, 2019Notes submitted by Sharon Bongers; photos by Renee Lippa

Gail Farewell - The drips are good; but, do they work? It's good to let yourself go loose. Play moves us forward.

Nola Bukvi - A winter scene. The barn looks lonely. There is nice modulation in the snow. The sky needs some varia-tion and play with the fence posts.

Jan Fraser - I think this is an interesting use of materials. I like the purples, you perhaps could have used more. I think it wouldhelpwithadefinedlightsource.

Sora Han - I like what is happening. Mix greens and reds to punch it out with some grays.

Rob Guetre - I like the grays. You could put more pure colour in front lower right. Some darks are not dark enough. Distinguish the light source more generally. Some nice painting.

Frances Hessels welcomed Donna Miller, our critic for the evening.

Donna received a BED with an Art Major in 1974, and BFA in 1992, both from the U of A, with three galleries representing her after graduation. Donna taught Elementary and Junior High locally and then Art 10, 20, 30 for the Alberta Distance Learning Centre for four years as well as teaching workshops. While raising children, she painted en plein air with Barrhead and Ft. Assiniboine Art Clubs and went out on yearly paint outs in the summer with the Faculty of Extension. With divorce in 1998 she went back to teaching fulltime.

Since 2007 Donna has had a series of solo shows in Alberta venues. She hikes in the Rockies where she photographs and sketches moments that inspire large acrylic landscapes.

Donna has an upcoming exhibit at Capital 44, a government building, 10044 108 St., kitty corner to the legislature, for the months of July and August.

Renee Lippa - Gorgeous water. What is your focus, shore or trees. Do you need the upper area?

JoyceMcCoy - I like the flower buteliminate the background. It needs some deeper purples. Decide on a focus.

Richard St Amant - This is an evolving creation. It is fun and playful with the bright colors. I think you should do more. Use this as a beginning. The back works with the back; but, not the front.

Jani Galarneau - Multidimensional; really like the background. It works. Maybe could use a little more darkness under the whale.

David Nash - This looks like someone is having a good time. I like the shapes. I would like to see more repetition of color. The picture is divided somewhat.

This is a color extravaganza. Have the brighter colors in front, you have already done it, you could do more.

Ada Wong - I see good parts in this one, good darks in lower right. I see an issue with bright colors. Brights in front and back subdued. Look at the shapes of the trees, understand the shapes.

Mohamed Hirji - I love the eyes, really cool, very distinct. Color repetition, repeat a color 2 or 3 times. There is a problem with the feet. Develop the branch a bit more.

Diana Panizzon - Could be more dis-tinction in the trees, they all look the same, put in some highlights. Decide where the light source is coming from.

Mona Innes - There is good detail in the foreground. This is a centralized image. Try to have the water come from one side or the other. Mush out greens with gray tone or lighten up a bit.

Myrna Wilkinson - I think it is really good in the trees. The colors are all very similar, some variation is needed. The trees on the right need a light source shown. Lower areas could have more vibrant colors.

Marge Somkuti - This reminds me of Capri.Iliketheforeground.Theflowersgoing down the stairs are confusing, it is because everything is the same value. The reds are the same intensity.

Leona Olausen - I really like the square, it gives dimension. I would like to see more definition in the centre of the flower.Alsocouldhavemoredarks.

Barb Stachow - I am not sure where some colors have come from. Like the bike. The problem is we don't have a color scheme established. Some colors do not harmonize, perhaps one side of the wall could be darker.

Connie Clarke - I like the building, there issomefinework.Someofthegreensare a little hot. The mountains, there is not enough change in value, bring one up a little.

Frances Hessels - I love your people and the fun stuff at the top. The right side needs some darks; but, subtle. The posts are competing with people.

Johanna Septou - I love the play, I love the purple. I wish you had used more yellow. You could use more value and more pinks.

Penny Lamnek - When I look at this painting I see a mid range colors scheme, with not a lot of variation. Increase your value scale of lights to darks, and decide on a light source.

At each Zone Show, three jurors provid-ed by the ACACA, select artworks for awards and advancement to the Alberta Wide Show which is held in a previ-ously designated location, most often in either Edmonton or Red Deer. In general practice, about one third of the art pieces at zone shows are selected for sending to the Alberta Wide show, at such time, a further jurying takes place. About one half of the paintings and sculptures sent to the Alberta Wide show are chosen for hanging in the Alberta Wide. Scholar-ships and awards, many named to honor our former members, are picked by the jurors the day before the opening of the Alberta Wide Show.

AWARDING ARTISTS – ACKNOWLEDGING ART

At the conclusion of the Alberta Wide Show, the Awards are then handed out to the Award Winning Artists, there is an AGM for all members, and there is a Critique done on all pieces of art that the Artist choses for this exercise, providing encouragement and learning experiences for the artists and public alike. A critique of work is a feature of each ACACA juried art show.

Once the Alberta Wide show comes to a conclusion, all pieces of art that have won in their categories at the Zone Show level, and the Juried winners at theAlbertaWide, advance for afinalshowing of “the best of the best” at the Alberta Spirit Show. All remaining pieces of art are then taken home with the Artist.
