Stewardship—Sharing Our Treasure with the Community
“SOJOURNER PROJECT” IS THE MAY RECIPIENT! The Charitable Giving collection held on May 9 and 10, 2015, will support the Sojourner Shelter which is a secure residence for women who are experiencing abuse or threats of abuse, by their partners.
Sojourner Shelter opened its doors in 1979 in Hopkins and is a place where women and their children can be safe while they receive information, resources, legal advocacy and one-to-one support and information. Children are assessed for physical, emotional, or other forms of abuse so the proper services can be provided or referrals made to the appropriate resources. Sojourner houses about 20-24 women and their children every night. This being an emergency shelter, the average stay is 6-8 weeks. They provide all meals prepared in their commercial kitchen and families eat together. Services provided by the shelter include: safe, temporary crisis housing, 24-hour crisis phone line, help with legal, medical, housing and (limited) financial needs, support groups, life skills groups, and parenting resources support. They also provide education and prevention work to youth around dating violence, safety and unhealthy vs. healthy relationships. They have a marriage and family licensed therapist on staff and provide a community support group. They hired an advocate that is focusing on transition work so that women who leave the shelter or programs will have a resource that is checking in with them. This Mother’s Day, please remember the mothers and their children at Sojourner Shelter. Please be generous.
Senior Anointing Mass There will be a senior anointing Mass on Tuesday, May 12 at 10:00am at St. John campus. Following Mass in the Community Room, Anne Marie Buck from the Hopkins Police Department will present summer safety tips and St. Therese Southwest will treat everyone to a luncheon.

Parish News
Dear Parishioners, In this weekend’s gospel, Christ tells the apostles that he is giving them a new commandment: to love one another. At first, that might seem kind of strange for Jesus to say that. The commandment to love each other was hardly new. Even one of the scholars of the law was able to point to this greatest of all commandments during a discussion with Jesus, to love God with our whole being and to love our neighbor as ourselves. So for Jesus to say that he is giving them a new commandment by telling them to love one another might have sounded odd to the apostles. One could imagine the apostles looking at each other, then looking at Jesus and saying, “We’ve heard that one before.” But what is new is not the commandment. What is new is our Lord’s embodiment of this commandment. He tells his apostles and he tells us that we are to love one another as he loved us, we are to follow his example of perfect sacrificial love. How did Christ love us? By giving up his life so that we could be saved. That is the example that he puts forth for us, the new commandment that he has given us. So now we’ve gone from something that seemed obvious, love one another, to something that seems impossible, love one another as Christ loved us. How can we love the way Christ loved? He is the savior, and we are not. We cannot die on the cross for each other for the forgiveness of sins. That’s impossible, so that must not be what Jesus meant, because he would not command the impossible. We cannot love each other the same way the Creator loves His creatures, the way the infinite loves the finite. But what is possible, and what Christ does command, is that we love each other even to the point of denying our own desires to help bring about the good of the other. This is what it means to love with a sacrificial love, a love like Christ’s, a love that is willing to give something up for the sake of the other. This is the love that God has shown for us by sending His Son to die for us. This is the love Christ commands that we show for each other, a love that costs us something, a love that makes a demand on our life. There is no lack of opportunity to practice this kind of love. Husbands and wives are called to make sacrifices every day for the good of their spouse and their children, and to do so not begrudgingly, but with a spirit of joy that they have this opportunity to love like Christ. Priests are called to make sacrifices for the sake of the People of God, again, not reluctantly as if those sacrifices were a burden, but with rejoicing that we can share in the work of the Kingdom. All of us, in whatever vocation we are, are called to put aside our own desires when we see a neighbor who is in need, when they are sick, or hungry, or lonely. Their good trumps our own desires. This is the love that Christ commands us to show. It is by showing this kind of love, sacrificial love, a love that is willing to give something up for the sake of the other, that we will be recognized as followers of Christ. For it is by Christ working through us that we are able to live up to this new commandment. When we show this love for another person, we are showing them the Lord working in us. Because Christ is with us, we will find that these sacrifices we make out of love will not take away from us. We have no need to worry, because Christ will reward us one hundred-fold for the sacrifices that we make. Christ has shown us the way. Let us be true disciples, and obey his new commandment to love. –Fr. Liekhus

a lot of raking and tidying up to do. If you have a weed whacker or square shovels, they can be helpful for some of the tasks. We want the place to look nice for Memorial Day when Fr. Liekhus will preside at the outdoor Mass. Directions: Go south on Shady Oak Road, left on Bren Road, then the first right (directly behind the Scoreboard Restaurant). Meet us just inside the main entrance!

DOWN ONE’S LIFE FOR ONE’S FRIENDS” - JOHN 15:12-13 Do you love Jesus? Do you consider Him your friend? From Father Ralph Goman. Once again I am asking your special prayers for me and for the medical people who will be doing the “work” of repairing and replacing my left hip joint. The surgery will take place at Fairview-Riverside Hospital on Tuesday, May 26. I will be in the hospital for a few days and then transferred to a extended health service for a few weeks (the fewer, the better). There I will receive daily plasma transfusion as the surgery heals, and also have some therapy about walking again. This is a complicated and risky surgery, and the more people I have around me in spirit gives me more trust and confidence. I have great faith and trust in God and in the medical staff and care I always have had. You and so many others around me in spirit strengthen that faith. It goes without saying that I love you all, and thank you deeply for all the prayers and care and concern you always give me. I pray for all of you daily as well.
