Confusing Verb Pairs
(5 min.) Warm up: 20 Questions: “I was riding a train and talking on the phone in the United States.
(20-30 min.) Presentation: I wrote the table on the board to save money on copies but I handed out the Make vs. Do phrase sheet. (pg. 2)
SAY TELL USES 1) speak in general
Ex. The teacher says we need to study more.
1) speak to a specific person Ex. Angela told Juan she went to the park.
2) report what someone said Ex. Juan said he liked Quito.
2) instruct someone to do something Ex. Angela told them to eat.
3) command someone to get information
Ex. Tell me where you are going. NOTE* Indirect Object NOT NECESSARY Indirect Object NECESSARY
SPEAK TALK USES 1) group of people in general
Ex. She spoke about her problems at work.
1) limited group of people Ex. She talked to her friends about her problems at work.
2) languages Ex. Pedro speaks Spanish and English.
2) before preposition, about, when introducing the subject of the conversation Ex. We talked about our child.
3) before preposition, to, when introducing the conversational partner Ex. She was talking to Juan at the party.

DO MAKE USES 1) action, activity, task
Ex. I did the laundry. 1) constructing, building, creating
Ex. I made a dress. 2) any type of work
