First Steps

Identifying your MAC Address

The MAC address of a Mediatrix unit is printed on a sticker underneath the device.

Identifying your Dynamic IP Address

There are two ways to find the IP address of a Mediatrix 4400 unit. On first boot, the Mediatrix 4400 attempts to get its IPaddress via DHCP. If there is no DHCP server on the network, you must assign it a static IP address. See the next sectionUsing a static IP address.

The DHCP server logs or database can be searched by matching the MAC address to the assigned IPaddress.

Start a network capture program, such as Wireshark, and look for bootp protocol packets. This can be doneby setting bootp as a filter. The DHCP Offer or DHCP request messages contain the IP address assignedto the unit.

Using a Static IP Address

If no DHCP server is available, connect directly to the unit to configure it. If a DHCP server is available as described above,skip to the next section.

1. Configure your computer with a static IP address in the 192.168.0.0/24 subnet. For example, set the IP address of yourcomputer to 192.168.0.5. The Mediatrix rescue interface uses the 192.168.0.1 address by default.

2. Connect the computer directly to the Mediatrix 4400 Ethernetport (Networkport if you have a 2 Ethernet ports version),or through a hub or switch, with a regular Ethernet cable, no cross-over cable is needed.

3. Perform a Recovery Mode reset. Using a paper clip, press the eset button at the back of the unit for more than 5seconds, until all the LEDs start blinking. Release the paper clip.

If the LEDs are all turned on and have stopped blinking, you held the paper clip too long and did a Factory Reset (allsettings erased). Start the Recovery Reset again.

Logging in the Unit

1. Put the IP address of the Mediatrix 4400 unit in your internet browser.

2. In the login screen, enter the username public. Leave the password field empty. Click the Loginbutton.

IMPORTANT!!!In the Management > Misctab, enable the management for all interfaces. If the management interface is

Rescue only, you maynot be able to access the web page when out of the Recovery Mode.

Configuring the Hardware Tab

If required, enable Power Feeding for the desired BRI ports. The Clock Referenceparameter in the Unit Configurationsection is used to synchronise the other BRI ports on a specific BRI. For example, ports 2, 3 and 4 can be synchronised witha PSTN line in BRI port 1. If no clock reference is selected, the Mediatrix unit uses its own internal clock for synchronisation.

Configuring the Syslog Server

Under System->Syslog, enter the IP address of the syslog server in the Remote Hostfield. If you are gathering packetsusing Wireshark, you can also use the IP of the PC that takes the Wireshark capture.

Depending on how much information is needed, the TAC Diagnostic Traces can be enabled at the bottom of the page. ClickSubmit. Before sending any debug trace to Media5, make sure that Diagnostic Traces are enabled and that the syslogService Severity levels are set to Debug.

WARNING:The TAC Diagnostic Traces generate a lot of traffic and may affect call quality when the gateway is fully loaded

(for example a 3632 using the 2 slots (60 channels)).

Network

Configure the Network Parameters

If a DHCP server was used to obtain an IP address and you do not need to modify any network parameters, skip to theISDNconfigurationsection.

If the recovery mode was used to assign a static IP address or if a modification to the existing static configuration is needed,begin by configuring the default router first. You can also modify your DNS and SNTP settings.

Configure the desired static IP addresses, and do not forget to put a /XX, which represents your network mask. When done,enable the Uplink interface, disable the rescue interface and click the Submitbutton.

WARNING: When you click Submit, the unit applies the configured network parameters. To access the unit configurationpage after this modification, point your browser to the newly configured IP address of the Uplink interface.

ISDN Configuration

BRI Ports Configuration

All ports can be individually configured. Select the proper port by using the Select Interfacedrop-down menu.

Important Variables Descriptions

Pay particular attention to the following variables, they have a high impact on establishing the link on your BRI.

Variable Description

Endpoint type This is the most important setting. It defines whether your unit is a

Network Terminal or Terminal Equipment.

If you are connecting a BRI phone, set this to NT.

If you are connecting to PSTN line, set this to TE.

If you are connecting to a PBX, you will most likely have to try both todetermine your PBX configuration (if unknown). *Usually* the PBX is TEand the Mediatrix unit the NT (PSTN replacement), but not always.

Connection Determine the type for the ISDN line to which you are connecting. Point-to-Multipoint is usually for phones, and Point-to-Point when connecting to aPBX or a PSTN line.

Inband DTMF dialling Disable this variable if the inbound ISDN to SIP numbers have doubleddigits, for example 11223344556677

Send Restart on Startup When using Point-to-Multipoint, set this variable to disable

You can apply the same configuration to all ports by clicking the BRI interfaces at the bottom.

Validate the Interop Section

When configuring a new unit or setup, set the variable in the Interopsection to enable and select all ports before clickingSubmit. When facing issues in call establishment, disable the variables one by one.

Configuring ISDN Services

Enabling the Calling Line Information Presentation parameter makes the caller ID present in outgoing SIP to ISDN calls.

WARNING:Even if the Mediatrix unit passes thecaller ID, it could be suppressed further downstream on either SIP or ISDN.For caller ID problems, looking at the syslog messages containing the SEND Setupmessages is a good debug approach.

Setting the Facility Services to Enableenables the support of ISDN FACILITY messages.

The MSN numbers fields allow configuring numbers that will be allowed when a call is incoming from the SIP side (in point-tomultipoint configuration only). If the called party number is different from those three numbers, the call is silently discarded.

IP Synchronisation

To synchronise a Mediatrix Master Synchronisation unit for video calls over ISDN, enter the IP address of the unit that actsas the synchronisation master. When the settings have been applied, synchronisation will start. It can take several hoursbefore the unit is fully synchronised.

The Unit Mode field displays the synchronisation status of the unit (Active/Inactive).

SIP Configuration

Registrar and Proxy

1. Enter the IP address or FQDN names of the Registrar and Proxy. Dont forget to specify the SIP port of the server (i.e.:5061) or use :0 if you wish to use the default port of 5060. If you use FQDN, using :0 will make the Mediatrix unit issueDNS SRV requests.

2. If you are using an Outbound Proxy, enter its IP address and port in the Outbound Proxy Hostfield.

3. Click Submitto save the data, or Submit & Refresh Registrationto send new REGISTER packets to the Registrar.

Interop

Registration

1. In the SIP >Registrationtab, configure the registrations required for your SIP UAs.

2. To configure a single SIP username per BRI port, set it in the corresponding User Namefield, and set the correspondingRegisterfield to Enablefor the Endpoint.

3. To configure more than one username per BRI, add Unit Registrationfields like the 103 user name in the abovescreenshot.

4. Click Submit.

Authentication

1. If your SIP user names require authentication, go to the SIP >Authenticationtab to configure your user names andpasswords.

2. If the user name applies to an endpoint (such as a BRI port), select Endpointin theApply Tofield.

3. If the user name was configured in a Unit Registration (see above section), select either unitor username.

4. If the registrations fails after the correct setup of the user name and password, set the Validate Realmvariable toEnableand enter your realm in the Realmfield. This can be determined by looking at the realm field in a 401Unauthorized Sip response. In the screenshot below the realm is asterisk.

Configuring the DTMF Maps

The DTMF maps control which numbers can be dialled. This is also referred to as the Dial Plan. The default x.T allowsdialing any digits, any number of times and then wait for the Inter DTMF Timeout.

Configuring the Required CODECs

Enable or disable the required codecs. The Data column, allows configuring the codecs used for faxes, modems and videocalls.

Note that you can set priorities for each CODEC. For example, the G.729 codec can be set as the preferred codec in SIPinvites by setting a higher priority than the other enabled codecs. Click the Editbutton next to the desired codec to set a

priority. The higher the priority number, the higher the codec priority in the SDP. In the following screenshots, G.711 has ahigher priority than G.729.

DTMF Transport

Determines how the pressed digits (DTMFs) are transported on the network during a call.

Parameter Description

In-band The DTMFs are transported in the audio stream directly (in the RTP packets).

Out of band using RTP (RFC

2833)

The Mediatrix unit sends special RTP packets that contain the DTMF information

(rtpevent filter in Wireshark). Important: RFC2833 is negotiated in the initial SDPexchange. There are no rtpevent packets if the softswitch has RFC2833 disabled.

Out of band using signallingprotocol

The Mediatrix unit sends SIP INFO packets. (sip filter in Wireshark).

By default, the Mediatrix unit uses the draft draftChoudhuriSipInfoDigit00. If DTMF failsto work, use the Mediatrix UMN software to change the following variable toinfoDtmfRelay.

Configuring the Call Router

The Call Router defines the sources and destinations for all calls that pass through the Mediatrix unit.

1. Go to the Call Router Configsection and add a new route by clicking on the + sign.

2. Avoid typing anything manually. Use the drop-down selector to select the route Source and Destination. For the firstroute, select isdn-Bri1as the source and sip-defaultas the destination, then click Submit.

If several SIP gateways are configured, they will appear in the selector under sip-gatewayname. In the followingscreenshot the default SIP gateway is used.

3. Create a route for each BRI port. Please note that if a modification was made and the Config Modifiedis yellow, clickthe Apply button to apply the configuration.

4. Apply your changes.

Adding a Hunt Group

You can add a Hunt group if there are several BRI lines available for SIP to ISDN calls. The Hunt group enables theMediatrix unit to cycle through all available BRI ports until a free B-channel is found.

This can be useful for PSTN connection or PBX connections with multiple BRI ports.

Mapping for Video Conference

Video conference equipment requires the use of the Unrestricted Digital transfer capability (ITC).

1. Under the Telephony > Codecstab, make the following mapping:

This means that for incoming INVITE messages using Clear Mode as first codec in the media list, the outgoingISDN SETUP message will be of bearer unrestricted.

It also means that for inbound SETUP messages of bearer capability unrestricted, the first codec in theoutbound INVITE will be of type Clear Mode.

2. Adjust your desired codec accordingly.

If you select Select instead of prioritize, your outgoing INVITE messages contain only the specified codec (in

this screenshot Clear Mode).

Restarting all Required Services

By now a message should be displayed at the top of some web pages asking you to restart some services.

1. Click the hyperlink and the System > Servicespage comes up.

2. Find the services with a little * and select Restartin the correspondingActiondrop-down menu.

3. You can click on the Services box at the top to refresh the status.

Your Mediatrix unit should not be ready for operation.

Management

Configure Backup and Restore

This section allows backing up and restoring the unit configuration. After the configuration of the unit, making a backup isrecommended.

1. Enter a name for the file that will contain your backup and select your transfer protocol. The Location parameter isrelative to the root directory.

2. Enter the hostname and use :0when using the default protocol ports (69 for TFTP, 80 for HTTP, etc).

3. Click Submitto save the changes or Submit & Backup Nowto export the file immediately.
