Conference report on the 45th German liquid crystal conference

After 2 years of joint meetings with the British LiquidCrystal Society, the German Liquid Crystal Society(Deutsche Flüssigskristallegesellschaft, DFKG) decidedto conduct their 2018 meeting separately; this year,however, the meeting did not take place in Germany,but in the neighbouring Grand Duchy of Luxembourgat the University of Luxembourg, hosted by the labgroups of Jan Lagerwall and Giusy Scalia at CampusLimpertsberg in Luxembourg City. While the focus ofthe meeting was on liquid crystal research and researchgroups in Germany, in keeping with the internationalcharacter of Luxembourg, invitations were sent out tolab groups in the neighbouring Benelux countries aswell as to France, resulting in approximately 100 parti-cipants (see Figure 1) from 17 different countriesattending, including some from as far away as thewest coast of the United States and from the Republicof Korea.

The 2.5-day meeting was kicked off with a separatehalf-day mini-conference, e@(LC)2, a focused session onrecent advances in liquid crystal elastomer research inEurope. This session featured four invited talks (RudolfZentel from the University of Mainz; Natalie Katsonisfrom the University of Twente; Verena Görtz from theUniversity of Lancaster; and Arri Priimägi from TampereUniversity of Technology) and three contributed oralpresentations, all covering aspects of elastomers fromthe chemistry and its optimisation, to fabrication stra-tegies and methods, and all the way to novelapplications.

Following the elastomer mini-conference was themain event. After some opening remarks by JanLagerwall on behalf of the organising committee, themain sessions began, featuring five invited speakers(Figure 2); 26 contributed oral presentations, of whichover half were given by Ph.D. students and postdoc-toral researchers; and 42 posters, including 5 postersrelated to topics from the e@(LC)2 session. Apart fromthe focus on liquid crystal elastomers, a wide range oftopics was discussed from both experimental and the-oretical standpoints (or a combination of the two). Theoral presentations of the main conference were sortedinto six sessions: ‘Living Liquid Crystals and CollectiveBehavior’, with talks about biological and activenematics and liquid crystals in microfluidic set-ups;

‘Liquid Crystal and Nanoparticle Composites’, featuringtalks on nanoparticle-doped liquid crystals and theirapplications; ‘Liquid Crystal Optics’; ‘Novel Phenomenaand Applications’, which looked into previously unex-plored applications of liquid crystals; ‘Novel LiquidCrystal Phases and Structures’, which looked into lyo-tropic smectics and the rheological properties ofreduced-dimension liquid crystals; and ‘Liquid CrystalChemistry’, which focused on the synthesis and charac-terisation of new liquid crystals and optimisation ofsynthesis pathways to achieve the desired outcomes.

The oral presentations overall were of a very highquality, covering a diverse array of topics in a mannerthat was engaging to the audience and that stimulatedquestions after the presentations and discussion duringthe coffee and lunch breaks.

The social programme of the conference featuredthe poster presentations held in parallel with the wel-come reception, allowing for lively poster discussions tobe held in a relaxed atmosphere, and the conferencebanquet held in the Rives de Clausen district (Figure 3).Walking lunches and coffee breaks held in the posterarea also encouraged further discussions and network-ing throughout the duration of the conference, and,despite the unusually cold temperatures for March,additional opportunities for exploring the capital ofthe world’s only Grand Duchy were available through-out and after the conference.

This year, the Saupe Medal was awarded by theDFKG to Dr Wim H. de Jeu of RTWH Aachen for hisconsistent contributions to the field of X-ray and othercharacterisation techniques of liquid crystals. In addi-tion, several prizes were awarded for presentations dur-ing the conference (Figure 4). Two poster prizes wereawarded by the DFKG jury: one to Moritz T. Dechant ofthe University of Würzburg for his work ‘Donor-Acceptor Phthalocyanine Dyads: The Right ComplexLC Nanostructures For Organic Photovoltaics?’; theother to Christian Häge from the University ofStuttgart for ‘Switching dynamics and nanosegregationin carbosilane “de Vries”-type smectics’. The organisingcommittee additionally conducted a popular vote ofthe conference attendees for an additional best posterprize, the winner of which being Lukas Pschyklenk ofthe Technische Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Seig for his

poster ‘Optical detection of harmful substances withencapsulated chiral-nematic liquid crystals’. Videoabstracts were solicited prior to the conference for pre-senters to advertise their presentations, and Lukas B.Braun of Johannes Gutenburg University of Mainzreceived a prize for his abstract to advertise his poster‘Microfluidic Synthesis of Liquid Crystalline ElastomerActuators’. Finally, the DFKG’s Young Scientist Awardwas given to Lawrence W. Honaker of the Universityof Luxembourg for his oral presentation ‘Microfluidicsfor Measuring the Equilibrium and Dynamic InterfacialTensions of Liquid Crystals’.

After a very successful sojourn to the west ofGermany, the 46th German Liquid CrystalConference will again return to its home country in2019, this time to be hosted at the University ofPaderborn by the group of Heinz Kitzerow.
