“The Power of Saying No”
Friday, February 16 at 6:30PM, DoubleTree Hilton, Duval Ballroom ForCollegeForLife
Many student leaders feel overwhelmed as their to-do lists get longer, each day. Juggling the basics of college student life is much harder when you add meetings, committee responsibilities, and public relations obligations on top of the already daunting pile. By saying "yes" to everything that comes at you each day, your stress increases and your effectiveness declines. Your mental and physical health might be at risk. Then, both you and your organization suffer. In her campus program, Kimberley reminds students that “No” is a complete sentence. Part of being an empowered, effective student leader is setting healthy boundaries you're willing to defend. What prevents you from saying "no"? Do you fear negative judgment of your abilities? Are guilt and outdated ideas of self-worth causing you to say “yes” to things you shouldn't? Being willing to say “no” and deflecting the endless barrage of opportunities and requests is a learned skill – one that Kimberley has had to learn some hard lessons about in your career and journey to mental wellness. Perfect for any campus leadership event, “The Power of Saying No” is about an oft-overlooked component of college student leadership. It’s about preserving your mental, emotional and spiritual health so that you can be your best self – as a leader for your organization and for those you care about. It's about leading by example and preserving the productivity that makes you an amazing student leader.
Brief Biography: Kimberley Locke is a recording artist, entrepreneur and American Idol
alum. Auditioning for the show in 2003 was a life-changing decision for Kimberley; it led
to several chart-topping songs and albums as well as countless opportunities to be in the
public eye as a model, spokesperson and professional speaker. Her message about the
power each of us have to say “no” is a powerful reminder of how to live a life of
priorities. She now travels the nation delivering it to college audiences as part of the
ForCollegeForLife speakers team.

Program Summary: Using the breath as a metaphor for all that happens in a student’s
life, this session will cover some basic tai chi and proper breathing techniques to help students with their physical and mental health. During the course of a day, we breath in
(receive information through conversations, watching television, checking social media,
etc.) and breath out (provide information through conversations, social media, etc.). In
between those moments, we must pause (meditate, attend to spiritual needs, take a
vacation, etc.) in order to stay health.
