NEWS LETTER JULY 2012

SMB’s are the backbone of the Indian Economy and the engines of performance behind the success of the Large Conglomerates that we see. More than 70 % of Indian Industry thrives in the SMB Sector which today is not getting adequate focus, due importance and recognition it deserves.

Challenges of the SMB Sector are unique beginning from capital related issues to people retention issues not to mention problems of working capital, credit facilities, vagaries of the market, OEM’s and impact of high cost of operations compounded by low yields, high cost of processing, working with vintage machinery not withstanding several bouts of internal Creativity and Innovation which go unnoticed.

To address the Business in a holistic manner, there is a need to align the thinking of the entrepreneurs to embrace structured frameworks that address all needs of the Business including financial and non financial processes and metrics. CII Institute of Quality based on its Cluster experience with SMB’s for enhancing Manufacturing Excellence and its experience of guiding Large Organizations implementing the Business Excellence Framework has bought out a roadmap for Implementation in the SMB sector that comprehensively addresses all aspects of Management. This Roadmap predominantly is inspired by the acclaimed EFQM framework which is a proven tool for enhancing Organization competiveness.

Following are the essential building blocks for any company on the journey to Excellence

Developing the Vision and Mission statementsArriving at a set of results impacting key stakeholders and key processes

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

Business planningObjective deploymentPeople related processesOnce these building blocks are ready, Operations and Quality Management needs to be honed (Which are fundamental to any Organization)The remaining processes of CRM, Finance, Technology, IT etc can be looked into later depending on the importance of the same to the Organization.

All these would need to be looked into/ developed considering the Organization specific context which is derived from the “ Organizational Profile” where an Organization is characterized with respect to its product / service, culture, workforce diversity, competitors, markets, technologies, improvement mechanisms, etc which drive the development of the processes.

“If you cannot measure what you are doing”, you do not what you are doing says the adage. In line with this philosophy, it is imperative that all processes need to be measured so that the Organization is aware and is in control of the “Drivers of Performance” which leads to the “Desired Outcomes”

CII – IQ Counselors help Organizations implement these concepts by devising a customized roadmap post a dip stick assessment which helps prioritize the agenda post the elementary building blocks. Customized Interventions / Clusters / Specific Theme based / Function based Training and Counselling packages are available.
