Black Yankee soldiers bayoneted these wounded soldiers in their beds in the hospital (supposedly on orders of Grant, but nothing can be found of these orders). Col. Sam had sent his manservant (slave) to the hospital to care for them when they were wounded. The slave hurried to him and told him of the murders and then they both went to bury the Gladney boys. Late in the night the slave crept into the Yankee quarters and killed the soldiers responsible for the deaths of the Gladney boys. Col. Sam rewarded the slave by educating him and his descendants and they became very prominent citizens of the community and are still today. (Verbal story from John William Gladney told to Betty Bond in 1996; nothing written down.)
