Born: 15 Apr 1803, Fairfield County SC Died: 17 Jul 1875, Magnolia, Columbia County AR Three of Samuel's sons were wounded at Vicksburg. Black Yankee soldiers bayoneted these wounded soldiers in their beds in the hospital (supposedly on orders of Grant, but nothing can be found of these orders). Col. Sam had sent his manservant (slave) to the hospital to care for them when they were wounded. The slave hurried to him and told him of the murders and then they both went to bury the Gladney boys. Late in the night the slave crept into the Yankee quarters and killed the soldiers responsible for the deaths of the Gladney boys. Col. Sam rewarded the slave by educating him and his descendants and they became very prominent citizens of the community and are still today.
