Steve Benzschawel True to his entrepreneurial spirit, Steve started a landscaping business at age 12 and had a fleet of trucks,

employees and accounts all over Madison by the time he graduated from UW Madison. When Business World needed a new

director in 2008, Steve jumped at the chance to teach young adults about business and entrepreneurship. Steve has coached

AAU basketball for 10 years, he volunteers with Schools of Hope as an ESL tutor and he is a Big Brother to Marlo through

the Dane County BB/BS program. The 2,000+ teenagers Steve sees each year inspire and inform his presentation, “Generational

Differences at Work”. Steve is one of the Millennials he describes in his presentation and embodies his generation’s belief that

some people do their best work with earbuds in, while texting, snapping, skyping and tweeting!

Michael Boettcher, Director of Grounds, Milwaukee Brewers Michael will be starting his 10th season with the Milwaukee Brewers

Baseball Club in April and his 5th season as the Director of Grounds. He got his start in the Sports Turf Industry as a Landscape

Intern in 2004 with the Brewers under the supervision of Mr. Gary Vanden Berg, who would turn out to be one of the his greatest

mentors. After his completion of his second internship with the Boston Red Sox, he graduated with his Bachelor’s Degree from

UW-Madison in Horticulture emphasizing in Sports Turf and Landscape Management. Michael returned to the Brewers as a Land-

scape Manager – 2nd Assistant to Gary in 2009. After two seasons he was promoted to Grounds Manager (1st Assistant) with his

focus shifting to the field, while still overseeing the landscape. Michael is thankful everyday for the direction and opportunities

that he was given to him by Gary. After going through several seasons of change within the Grounds Department, Michael looks

forward to continuing the tradition of producing a quality field and landscape for the Milwaukee Brewers organization, while

Tom Buechel, Consultant, Buechel Horticulture Solutions, and Horticulture Specialist, Nature Hills Nursery Tom is a horticulture

graduate with an emphasis in business and industry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has spent the last 25 + years

ers. Kyle has been working for Bailey Nurseries for almost 5 years, specializing in woody ornamentals and perennials. Prior to his

work with Bailey Nurseries, Kyle was a manager at a Rock county garden center for over 18 years. He attended

Kris Bachtell, Vice President of Collections and Facilities, The Morton Arboretum Kris' role at The Morton Arboretum includes di-

recting the horticulture, grounds, and facilities operations of one of the largest arboretums in the U.S. His interests include evalu-

ating plants suitable for the colder, harsher climate of the upper Midwest, and introducing these plants through the nursery

trade. He serves as a Director for the Chicagoland Grows® Plant Introduction Program, a joint venture of The Morton Arboretum,

Jerry Grzeca, Managing Partner of Grzeca Law Group, S.C. Jerry has practiced business immigration law for over twenty-five years

Jeff Gibson, Landscape Business Manager, Ball Horticultural Company For over 28 years, Jeff has managed a range of Ball custom-

er focused sales and marketing activities, currently focusing on Ball’s steadily growing landscape business segment. In this role,

Jeff works directly with landscape professionals and the greenhouse and nursery suppliers that serve them. He is a graduate of

the University of Illinois with degrees in Ornamental Horticulture and advertising communications. Jeff is a frequent traveler and

speaker to professional landscape, grower, and municipal organizations, as well as community groups, on landscape color trends,

new varieties of annuals, perennials and flowering shrubs, and landscape care and installation practices.

Jerry Gorchels, Account Manager, PanAmerican Seed Company Jerry started out in the Greenhouse industry as a grower. His expe-

rience includes greenhouse, nursery, landscape design and maintenance. After 30 years as a grower he entered the sales field as a

technical product representative, putting all that great experience to use as a resource. Jerry has been with PanAmerican Seed

Company for30 years; the first 15 were as the R&D greenhouse manager.

Carl Dowse, Key Account Manager, SiteOne Landscape Supply, Inc. Carl has been in the green industry for 45 years, starting as a

high schooler working at a local golf course. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with degree in Soil Sci-

ence, he has worked as a golf course superintendent, an irrigation division manager, safety director, and a sales representa-

tive. Carl has attained Irrigation Contractor, Irrigation Designer, and Irrigation Landscape Irrigation Auditor certifications from the

Theodore Chadwick, Associate Attorney, Grzeca Law Group, S.C. Teddy earned his Juris Doctorate from the University of California

Hastings College of the Law in 2009 and a Bachelor's degree, cum laude, in Political Science from the University of Southern Cali-

Roy Diblik Author, Co-owner of Northwind Perennial Farm Roy is a recognized perennial plant expert, grower, designer, speaker

and author. Combining his 35 years of knowledge growing traditional and Midwest native perennials, he specializes in highly

John Seidl, Transportation Consultant, Integrated Risk Solutions As a nationally known DOT/FMCSA expert and a 20+ year veteran of

the transportation safety community, John has conducted countless safety seminars, driver safety meetings and mock compliance reviews

for motor carriers throughout the U.S. He has extensive experience in law enforcement with both the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Admin-

istration (FMCSA) and as a Wisconsin State Patrol Motor Carrier Inspector. John also worked for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)

as a Hazardous Material Specialist, ensuring compliance with regulations via all modes of transportation, with a focus on aviation. John

Michael Peden, Account Executive, Integrated Risk Solutions Mike brings over 20 years of experience to Integrated Risk Solutions

Brent Horvath, President, Grower, Intrinsic Perennial Gardens, Inc. Brent is a third-generation gardener, second-generation nurse-

ryman, and first-generation American. He grew up in the business, working for his parents and then pursued a BS from Oregon

State University. In 1991, he started growing finished perennials for the wholesale trade. Over the years, he was inspired by the

work of great plantsmen such as his father Lajos Horvath, George Radtke, Roy Diblik, Roy Klehm, and Alan Bloom. He was encour-

aged to find plants of his own to introduce, and found his first, Penstemon d. ‘Pink Dawn’ in a field of Penstemon digitalis. This led

to more plant selection and hybridizing work in a variety of genera. Brent has developed over 100 new perennials, and holds over

35 plant patents. His favorites include Andropogon g. ‘Blackhawks,’ over 17 Geum varieties including ‘Mai Tai, Penstemon

Dr. Brian Hudelson, Director of Diagnostic Services, UW-Madison/Extension Plant Disease Diagnostics Clinic (PDDC). Brian serves

the state from his base on the UW-Madison campus, identifying plant diseases and providing clients with diagnoses and infor-

mation on disease control. His clients include agribusinesses, home gardeners, and plant health consultants like crop scouts and

arborists. Dr. Hudelson also teaches plant disease diagnostics to graduate students each summer and is a co-instructor in several

plant pathology courses. He also does extensive outreach, participating in programs like this one all over the state, as well as

producing fact sheets, and he appears frequently on Larry Meiller’s “Garden Talk” on Wisconsin Public Radio. Brian earned his BS

in Botany/Bateriology/Molecular Biology, his MS in Biometry, and his PhD in Plant Pathology, all from UW-Madison.

Matt Parsons, Senior Ecologist, Eco-Resource Consulting, Inc. Matt received his M.S. in Ecology from Utah State University and B.S.

in Forestry (Ecosystem Restoration and Management emphasis) from the UW-Stevens Point. Matt has over 8 years of professional

experience in ecological restoration, wetland ecology, plant biology, soil science, and natural resources management. He has

worked in both the private and public sector in a wide variety of ecosystems throughout the U.S. Matt joined Eco-Resource Con-

sulting in 2017 as a Senior Ecologist specializing in conceptual design, implementation oversight, and long-term monitoring of

ecological restoration projects with a focus on plant and soil ecology. Matt is a certified wetland delineator and has conducted

jurisdictional wetland delineations throughout Wisconsin and California. He has a strong background in conducting ecological

assessments, soils investigations, and impact analyses; preparing and implementing mitigation and monitoring plans; preparing

and negotiating agreements and permits required by regulatory agencies; and conducting botanical/rare plant surveys. Matt has

also participated in fish surveys and relocation efforts, wildlife surveys, and population assessments of sensitive/listed species.

Matt is published in several scientific journals, including Restoration Ecology and Native Plants Journal. Matt is an Ecological Soci-

ety of America Certified Ecologist and a Society for Ecological Restoration Certified Ecological Restoration Practitioner.
