Conemaugh Memorial Achieves Comprehensive Center Accreditation for Bariatric Surgery

Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center has achieved a Comprehensive Center Accreditation from the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP). A MBSAQIP accreditation formally acknowledges Conemaugh Memorial’s commitment to providing and supporting quality improvement and patient safety efforts for metabolic and bariatric surgery patients. As an accredited program, Conemaugh Memorial has demonstrated that its center meets every patient’s needs by providing multidisciplinary, high-quality, patient-centered care. The MBSAQIP Standards, outlined in the Resources for Optimal Care of the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Patient 2016, ensure that bariatric surgical patients receive a multidisciplinary program, not just a surgical procedure, which improves patient outcomes and long-term success. The accredited center offers preoperative and postoperative care designed specifically for their severely obese patients. “Conemaugh Bariatric Surgery Center has been an accredited Comprehensive Center since 2014,” says Dr. D’Arcy Duke, Bariatric Surgeon, Conemaugh Physician Group - Surgery. “We are committed to helping our patients become healthier by conquering obesity together. In recognition of our commitment to the community and the growth and development of the Bariatric Surgery Center, the American College of Surgeons re-accredited this site for an additional three years. ”In the United States, around 15.5 million people suffer from severe obesity, according to the National Institutes of Health, and the numbers continue to increase. Obesity increases the risks of morbidity and mortality because of the diseases and conditions that are commonly associated with it, such as type II diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease, among other health risks. Metabolic and bariatric surgical procedures have proven to be effective in the reduction of comorbid conditions related to severe obesity.

Celebrate National Donate Life MonthConemaugh Health System Activities

Learnmoreaboutdonationatconemaugh.org/OrganDonation.

National Donate Life MonthConemaugh Health System is pleased to join the Center for Organ Recovery & Education (CORE) to raise awareness of organ, tissue, and cornea donation, and to inspire everyone during Donate Life Month to be a hero – to be an organ donor. Nationally, 115,000 individuals are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant, including 2,500 in western Pennsylvania and West Virginia. At least 20 of these individuals will die each day without receiving the transplant they so desperately need. An additional individual is added to the national transplant list every ten minutes. “Our close collaboration with CORE sets the gift of life in motion,” says Pam Swansboro, Director of Nursing for Conemaugh Memorial and Chairperson for Conemaugh’s Organ, Tissue, and Eye Donor Advisory Committee. “Our hospitals have a culture of donation. We are all donation champions and work together to raise awareness about the vital importance of registering as a donor.” Approximately 11,000 individuals die annual who are considered medically suitable to donate organ, tissues, and corneas, but only a fraction donate. Anyone can be a potential donor regardless of age, race, or medical history. To learn more about organ, tissue, and eye donation, visit conemaugh.org/OrganDonation.

Medical Laboratory Professionals WeekApril 22 - 28

Medical Laboratory Professionals Week is celebrated April 22 to April 28 this year. The laboratories in the Conemaugh Health System care for over half of a million patients each year throughout west central Pennsylvania! There is an incredible wealth of wisdom, talent, and experience in the Conemaugh labs.

In 2017:

Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center lab performed 1,841,281 tests,

Conemaugh Nason Medical Center lab performed 262,346 tests,

Conemaugh Miners Medical Center lab performed 161,734 tests, and

Conemaugh Meyersdale Medical Center lab performed 71,681 tests.

Conemaugh Memorial’s lab had its first lab accreditation survey by The Joint Commission (TJC) in October 2017. Many long hours were spent preparing for all new accreditation standards. A team effort from the lab, Nursing, Infection Control, and Respiratory departments helped in preparing for this survey. These preparations resulted in a positive outcome. The Senior Director of Regulatory and Accreditation with LifePoint Health described the lab’s first TJC survey “as having the best outcome thus far from any LifePoint facility”.

Along with Conemaugh Memorial, Conemaugh Nason Medical Center also had their first lab accreditation survey by The Joint Commission in November 2017 which resulted in a two year accreditation. Conemaugh Miners and Conemaugh Meyersdale labs received two year accreditation from the College of American Pathologists in the summer and fall of 2017.

AABB came onsite in March 2018 to inspect Conemaugh Memorial’s Blood Bank. This inspection resulted in a two year accreditation of the Blood Bank.

Congratulations to the lab teams for all of your great work!

Happy Lab Week!

Expense and Mileage Update

Conemaugh Health System Employee Newsletter April 2018

Updated expense and mileage reports are available on Conemaugh’s intranet. The Expense Report is similar to the form always used. If only mileage is being reported, the simplified Mileage Expense form can be used. In all cases, any travel or training outside of the Conemaugh Health System must be pre-approved using the PER-15 Form. If the PER-15 includes a request for a cash advance or item such as registration fee to be paid separately, then a separate check request for these items must be included with the PER-15 as payments can no longer be processed based on the PER-15 alone. Supervisors have a copy of the check request form. In general, the same Conemaugh travel and expense policies within our policy manual remain in effect. Significant changes include: Data fields on both forms MUST BE TYPED. All receipts must be taped to 8 ½ x 11 sheets of paper. Every department now has a new 3-digit department number – consult supervisor. Checks will be mailed to employee’s home address on file. Checks are no longer cut locally, but by a national company called Standard Register.
