Hello. We’re Concrete Couch and we help communities come together to do amazing things.

The people we bring together create murals, bridges, towers, mosaics, park benches, friendships, wacky experiences, grow spinach (and other delectables), and yes, make the occasional concrete couch.

They also grow confidence, connection, hope, self-esteem, skills and optimism.

We love what we do. We think it’s important. And we hope you’ll come along and be a part of it.

Want to read about why we do what we do? See "7 Core Beliefs" on the next page.

Want to join us? Peruse the rest of this booklet, and find the right project for you.

Thanks! from all of us at Concrete CouchAlex, Becky, K8e, Joel, Jerry, Steve, Thom, Sherrie, Dan, Leah, Matt, Sophie, Eric, Natalie, Greg, et al

Mission Statement: To work with kids and community groups to create public art, to build community, and to create environments and experiences that humanize our world.

1) Community mattersIt’s what holds us together. But the places where community happens are disappearing. We want to create new ones. And strengthen the old places.

2) Making things is fun workCreativity is a fundamental human force that connects us to who we are. When we make things, we’re being our best selves.

3) Junk is just raw material waiting for an ideaYou’d be amazed what we can do with a pile of stuff that’s headed for the landfill.

4) Every community has strengths, assets and resourcesWe love discovering these resources, and creating a venue for the sharing of skills, knowledge, tools, and ideas. Projects move forward, and our communities grow stronger.

5) Sharing things with others makes people happierSharing food, music, tools, materials and knowledge makes us all feel better about ourselves and our world. We’re never happier than when were sharing our gifts

6) Happy people who feel valued contribute moreWe love watching what happens when a person is given a welder, an engaging project, new amigos, and a firm, loving steer. This is sheer magic and it’s what gets us out of bed in the morning.

7) Getting dirty is liberatingMost of our best times involved dirt, dust, paint, glue and some kind of unidentified gunk (respirators where appropriate). We make a mess to make things functional and beautiful.

Our 7 Core Beliefs

Mission Statement: To work with kids and community groups to create public art, to build community, and to create environments and experiences that humanize our world.

History: Around 1990 a group of artists, builders, teachers and one puppeteer began working with kids and community groups on creative projects like murals and puppetry programs. In 2003 these efforts coalesced into the non-profit Concrete Couch and in 2004 we received our 501(C)(3) status.

We worded our mission statement so that we could develop as the community and our teachers' interests grew and changed, and now we run many diverse programs… all creative, all build community, all strive to bring creative opportunity to people who can use it the most, all try to use recycled materials and the community’s available physical and human assets, and all are free.

We invite you to join our constantly evolving history!
