Shea Concrete’s Greg Stratus was the first J-J Hooks licensed producer to sell the new J-J Hooks MASH TL3 barrier system for use on MADOT’s Anderson Memorial Bridge project in Cambridge, MA. The bridge will have a bolt-down requirement. The proprietary removable bolt, with accompanying sleeve, will have only two attachment points per 12-foot barrier section. Dan Wade of Hilti Corp. will direct the Hilti bolt and sleeve installation and will train the contractor field service to assure proper installation. — Brian Stock SlenderWall Used for Johns Hopkins Facelift. Smith-Midland Corp. has announced they will be manufacturing 27,164 sq. ft. of SlenderWall panels for the renovation of the 9-story Nelson/Harvey building on the Johns Hopkins Medicine, Baltimore Campus. The architectural firms Wilmot Sanz and Ayers Saint Gross have designed the 158 SlenderWall panels to re-clad the existing building, using Endicott brick facing to maintain the original 1970’s exterior finish. Beginning in March 2013, SMC will begin panel delivery to the contractor, Whiting-Turner. Completion of production is scheduled for June 2013. The lightweight SlenderWall panels allow the recladding to be done using the existing foundation and superstructure. — Dale Neal Lonestar Easi-Set Building Sales Soar. The Lonestar Prestress Mfg., Inc. Sales Team has been extremely busy this past year. Easi-Set/Easi-Span Building sales have increased 133% over last year and their sales volume has jumped 183%. Leo Rowe and James Rice of Lonestar attribute the increase in sales to the payoff of providing lunch- and-learns to area Engineers and Specifiers. Texas has seen a surge in the economy, due in part to the increase of natural gas production. Congratulations to Lonestar! — Jeremy Smith Easi-Set Building & SlenderWall Ad Co-ops Now Include REED Construction Data Service. On November 1st, 2012, all participant producers in the Easi-Set Building and SlenderWall Co-op programs received individual “seats” on the REED Construction Data Service. This Service will provide co-op members full access to all new construction projects, both private and civil, across all 50 states. Each producer will be able to search proposed bid and post-bid project information. A wealth of information is contained in the searchable contact information for organizations and companies involved in the projects along with their project histories. This is an important benefit in creating prospect lists for future sales calls. The Service is being provided for an evaluation period of one year. As the annual contract renewal date approches, we will be contacting each co-op member for feedback on providing this Service as an ongoing benefit. — Dale Neal

Jackson Precast & Easi-Set Promoted SlenderWall at DBIA Show.On November 7-9, Easi-Set and SlenderWall licensed producer Jackson Precast participated in the annual Design-Build Institute of America show in New Orleans. Brian Stock, Easi-Set National Sales Manager and Matt DeVoss, President of Jackson Precast, spent the three days speaking with architects, engineers and builders

from across the country. The turnout was modest, but several good prospective leads were gathered. In addition to SlenderWall, Easi-Span Buildings were also promoted at this show for the first time and had good response.

In addition to the show, Brian & Matt met with the architects at Eskew+Dumez+Ripple, architects for the BioInnovation SlenderWall project in Downtown NOLA. The BioInnovation Center is a LEED Gold project and centerpiece of the newly established Greater New Orleans Biosciences Economic Development District. — Brian Stock

BPDL/Easi-Set Jointly Exhibit SlenderWall at the Architecture Boston Expo. The Architecture Boston Expo in early November was attended by approximately 15,000 architects, developers, & general contractors. The exhibit featured a pictorial display of notable SlenderWall projects in the northeast region, along with local BPDL projects. Staffing the booth were BPDL’s Guy Tremblay, based in Montreal, and Tom LeVangie, based in Boston, along with Easi-Set’s Moffette Tharpe. Moffette noted that many of those who stopped by the booth not only recognized the BPDL name, but all were quality visitors that attend this type of show. Trade shows provide opportunity for face-to-face, in-depth conversations. Early in 2013, BPDL will be launching a “lunch-and-learn” initiative in the Boston market. — Moffette Tharpe

J-J Hooks Barrier Services Provided to National Political Conventions.JE Hill of Leesburg, FL teamed with Smith-Midland Corp. to provide rental barrier installation/removal to the recent Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida. Timely setting/removal for crowd-control-barrier was very important. The J-J Hooks system was easy to install/remove with no loose hardware to worry about at the Convention site. Within weeks, Smith-Midland provided rental barrier installation/removal services to the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, NC where the same level of performance was repeated.

J-J Hooks has been the barrier system of choice for these types of events throughout the United States for many years. This is due in large part to the rapid installation/removal design, along with no worries about installing loose pins or channels when setting the barrier. — Brian Stock

Hy-Grade Adds SoftSound to their Product Line.In September of this year, Dominic Girotti, President elected to add the SoftSound absorptive noise wall to his existing product lines. SoftSound has passed all of the Ontario-required tests for approval. Additionally, Hy-Grade will be providing their company-specific sound wall design for approval and also having their plant approved as part of becoming an Ontario Ministry of Transportation provider for noise wall. Hy-Grade is also a licensed producer of J-J Hooks barrier and Easi-Set/Easi-Span Precast Buildings. — Moffette Tharpe

28th Annual Building Producers Seminar Helps Prepare for 2013.Easi-Set Building Producers gathered at the Sawmill Creek Resort in Huron, Ohio for three days of learning, sharing, and a bit of fun. With Norwalk Concrete Industries (NCI) serving as our gracious host, this year’s Seminar was one of the best yet. Owners and Sales staff came from California to Massachusetts, and Ontario to Texas to take part in this Annual Seminar and Awards event. The three-day Seminar began on Thursday morning with a round of golf on the beautiful Tom Fazio designed Sawmill Creek Golf Course, situated on the shore of Lake Erie. Despite a cool and rainy start, eight attendees joined in for a round of “scramble-style” play. Luckily, we had Scott and Sonia Kinnamon in the group. At least there were two players who were “in form.” Thursday night culminated in our Annual Awards Banquet, which saw our host company, NCI, walk away with four awards,

“Greatest Increase in Number of Buildings Sold” (their second consecutive win), “Most Complicated Building,” a tie with Modern Precast Concrete for the “Most Restrooms Sold” and a fun “Walking on the Wild Side” award for Erin Lendrum. The other annual awards were won

by Modern Precast Concrete for “Largest Building Footprint” and “Best Photo,” and by Smith-Midland for “Most Buildings Sold.” The evening was topped off with cigars and cocktails in the courtyard by the bonfire.Friday began with Easi-Set and Midland Advertising + Design presentations covering the Building Co-Op program, including a preview

of next year’s advertising plan. Sales, Operations and Technical Presentations followed, highlighting the value of Easi-Set’s Building Program through sales tips, operations information related to Easi-Set Buildings, and technical updates covering the updated ADA and IBC requirements. The Halloween-themed Friday Night Out at Cedar Point with the gentle rain reminded some attendees of their adventurous youth and reminded others of Gene Kelly’s “Singing in the Rain” dance routine! Many thanks to Rob & Kendra Smithson, our NCI hosts, for their survival guidance around Cedar Point. This year’s Building Producers Success Story presentations were some of the most professional and best ever shared. As always this perennial favorite with the Seminar attendees included a number of challenging, complex, and innovative projects. Plans are already underway for next year’s event, which will be hosted by Shea Concrete Products in Massachusetts — Jeremy Smith
