FEBRUARY 2015
Hills and Valleys
The last time we saw them we waved them in the breeze of a beautiful spring day chanting “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.” It was Palm Sunday, a day when we celebrated that Jesus had arrived in Jerusalem and was ready to complete his mission by taking his rightful place on his throne. Little did we know that the people who first chanted the words “Blessed is He” would only a few days later collectively demand “Crucify Him.” Little did we know that his rightful throne was the cross of Golgotha. Such are the hills and valleys of life. The palms we once raised almost a year ago are now before us once again. Only now they are ashes. Though they will once again be used in worship the message they proclaim is different. Today they declare “Dust you are, and to dust you shall return.” The Christian Faith is a journey of hills and valleys. Sometimes we stand at the top of the hill, our life in per-spective, knowing that Jesus is Lord, that His Father has become our Father, and will continue to provide for our every need as only He can. Other times we are in the valley, looking up trying to gain some perspective with mountains of fear, and loneliness, and despair on every side. There we wonder where God has gone, looking for blessings but feeling only curses. Lent is a time for us to gain some perspective. It is a time when we reflect upon the goodness of God and rejoice in his plan of salvation. Yet it is also a time when we reflect upon ourselves and see exactly why we need a Savior. Ash Wednesday services will be February 18 at 7:00pm. Lenten services will continue on Wednesday eve-nings at 7:00pm through March 24. I invite you to join me this year as we consider the words of the cross. “Blessed is He” who has raised up the valleys of life. “Blessed is He” who has made every mountain and hill low. “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord” for you. Isaiah 40:1
From the Board of Evangelism…
From the Board of Christian
Education... When I think of February, I think about how much Jesus loves us. Remember the song “Jesus Loves me this I know,” and we want our children to know this when they sing this special song with us in Sunday school. We are learning more about the life of Jesus in our “Growing in Christ” lessons. Please bring your children to Sunday School every Sunday. The Sunday morning Confirmation Class members are asked to read their book story chapter and complete their assignment in their workbooks before they come to class. Then they will be prepared for their class discus-sions of the lesson. Some of the children in this class have not taken their midterm test. They need to contact their teacher Dennis Mu-rawski to take this test. Start thinking about Vacation Bible School for this summer. We will use Concordia's “Camp Discovery” where “Jesus is at Work Through Us.” Let us know if you have any suggestions for VBS this year. If you like working with children, we would wel-come your help by teaching or co-teaching or substitute teaching a Sunday School class. Let Dennis Murawski or any member of the Board of Christian Education know. We would love to have you as part of our teaching team.
All of February “Bring a Friend to Church Sunday” adult and young adult visitors receive a Bible and "I Belong" bracelet. Board of Evan-gelism encourages the congregation to pick up extra bracelets to share with oth-ers.
Any Sunday Visitors will receive "We're Happy You Popped In" popcorn with Church infor-mation.

Chocoflan Dessert
Ingredients
12 -cup capacity Bundt pan Softened butter, to coat pan
1/4 cup cajeta or caramel sauce For the cake:
10 tablespoons butter, room temperature 1 cup sugar
1 egg, room temperature 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour 3/4 teaspoon baking powder 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/3 cup cocoa powder 1 1/4 cups buttermilk
For the flan: 1 (12-ounce) can evaporated milk
1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk 4 ounces cream cheese, room temperature
3 eggs 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
For garnish: 1/4 cup cajeta or caramel sauce
1/4 cup chopped pecans
Directions
Put an oven rack in the middle of the oven and pre-heat to 350 degrees F.
Coat a Bundt pan with a little butter, then coat the
bottom with 1/4 cup cajeta and put it in a large roasting pan. (The roasting pan will serve as a wa-
ter bath during baking.)
For the cake: Add the butter and sugar to a bowl and using an electric hand mixer or stand mixer,
beat until light and fluffy, then beat in the egg. Sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda and cocoa in a medium bowl. Beat 1/3 of the flour mix-ture, and 1/2 of the buttermilk into the egg mixture. Repeat, ending with the flour mixture. Blend until
well incorporated.
For the flan: In a blender, combine the evaporated milk, condensed milk, cream cheese, eggs and va-
nilla. Blend on high for 30 seconds.
Scoop the cake batter into the prepared Bundt pan and spreading evenly. Slowly pour the flan mixture over the cake batter. Cover with foil and add about
1-inch of hot water to the roasting pan.
Carefully slide the pan into the oven, and bake 1 hour, until the surface of the cake is firm to the
touch, or an inserted toothpick comes out clean. When cake is done, remove from the water bath
and cool completely to room temperature, about 1 hour.
Invert a large, rimmed serving platter over the
Bundt pan, grasp tightly together, giggle a little and flip over. Remove the pan and scrape any remain-ing cajeta from the pan onto the cake, garnish with
chopped pecans and serve!
Cook's Notes: The batters may appear to mix when you pour them into the pan, but they com-
pletely separate while baking, with the flan ending up on the bottom when it's inverted. I like eating it warm, but traditionally, it is chilled 24 hours before
serving.
Flan is a rich, creamy, cooked egg custard. It is often flavored with vanilla and baked in a water
bath to retain its delicacy.
Cajeta is a thick and creamy spread or paste made with caramelized sugar and milk. It is used as a desert on its own or as a topping. Also known as "dolce de leche," it is sold in many supermarkets, Latin specialty markets or online. It can be substi-
tuted with a thick caramel sauce.

Kids In Church
One Sunday morning, the pastor noticed little Alex was staring up at the large plaque that hung in the foyer of the church. The plaque was covered with names, and small American flags were mounted
on either side of it.
The seven-year old had been staring at the plaque for some time, so the pastor walked up, stood beside the boy, and said quietly, "Good
morning Alex."
"Good morning pastor," replied the young man, still focused on the plaque.
"Pastor McGhee, what is this?" Alex asked.
"Well, son, it's a memorial to all the young men and women who died in the service."
Soberly, they stood together, staring at the large plaque. Little Alex's voice was barely audible
when he asked, "Which service, the 8:30 or the 11:00?"
