Transcript of Conclusion

English languageDespite some minor flaws, the student shows competence towards the English Language. As far as Morphology goes the student portrayed adeptness. The sample contains 3 free morphemes: turtle, person, and box. Free morphemes are essentially morphemes that can be used as a word by itself. In most cases they often indicate the singularity of a word. Then there are inflectional morphemes. In the sample given I located 4 inflectional morphemes: lived, plants, things, and going. Inflectional morphemes function to distinguish the contrast between singular vs plural and present versus past. The most conspicuous thing I noticed when analyzing this sample is the lack of derivational morphemes. When reviewing the sample there were none to be found. Derivation is a pertinent process because its used to form a word with a meaning or category. Derivational morphemes such as: writer can function as two meanings and bring more conclusive evidence to a statement. A lack of derivational morphemes portrays the message that the language of this writer is formulaic. Instead of containing complex words with prefixes and affixes to convey deeper meaning, he/she sticks to words that are easy for him/her to adjust too. In terms of Syntax however the student portrays a definite work in progress. Even small gestures like the repetition of the simple noun He made the sample feel redundant. When analyzing the sample I couldnt help but notice the copious amount of misspelled words. Because of this I had a lot of trouble comprehending what the student was trying to say. It took me a tedious amount of time to efficiently translate the words, and even when translated I was still confused due to the poor placement of words in the sentence. In spite of misspelling words however, I was surprised at the amount of phonetic awareness the student portrayed. This conveys the message to me that although the student might not understand how to spell or pronounce certain words correctly, he/she is putting forth conscientious effort in assisting the readers understanding. This is further expressed through the correct use of Punctuatiation and Capitalization. Because the student included capital letters and periods I was able to effectively distinguish between the beginning of a new sentence and the end of a current one, which helped me track the flow of ideas. Overall, the student shows developing use of the English language. Though errors do exist, its not enough to completely impede understanding.
