Concert Band
Level IV
The purpose of the Concert Band, Level IV is to provide opportunities to further
develop basic music skills and instrumental techniques.
Prerequisite to membership in this program is Level III or equivalent study and
experience. Concert Band Level IV offers students the opportunity to perform literature
requiring more advanced instrumental skills. The literature selected will be representative
of a wide and diversified spectrum of band repertoire. Instruction will stress basic
fundamentals of music including vocabulary and symbolic notation with an emphasis on
specific playing skills.
The following proficiency levels are prescribed as goals to be met by the band
student with an average of 225 minutes of instruction per week. Classes meet regularly on
an A/B Block schedule.

Concert Band
Level V
The purpose of the Concert Band, Level V is to provide performance opportunities
to band students on a medium-advanced level. This ensemble will strive to establish
excellence in performance and further develop basic music skills and instrumental
techniques.
This class is open to any student upon recommendation and/or audition by the band
director. The size of the band will be determined by the size of the band facility and
instrumentation requirements of the ensemble.
Musicianship prerequisites will include a knowledge of scale fundamentals,
interpretation skills, acceptable tone production and/or percussion skills and adequate
technique.
The student will continue the in-depth study of the basic fundamentals of music to
include the areas of symbolic notation and reading, rhythmic and melodic drill, music
theory, and music history.
Repertoire in the Concert Band, Level V will include the study of moderate to
moderately difficult music. A variety of styles and compositional techniques will be
explored from the Baroque period through contemporary writing.
The Concert Band, Level V is performance oriented and will be active in concert
appearances and VBODA events.
The band director will endeavor to instill in each student a sense of pride in the
group, thereby encouraging appropriate conduct and etiquette in both performance and
non-performance settings. Proper care of and respect for music, instruments, uniforms,
equipment and facilities will be emphasized. The following proficiency levels are

The purpose of the Concert Band, Level VI is to provide the student with the
opportunity to attain the highest level of excellence. This level will be attained through an
in depth understanding of band literature and the aesthetic experience of performance.
This class is open to any student upon recommendation and/or audition by the
band director. The size of the ensemble will be limited to a logical and balanced
instrumentation.
Musicianship requirements will include advanced knowledge of scale
fundamentals, interpretation skills, good tone production and/or percussion skills, and
advanced instrumental techniques.
The student will be expected to expand his/her knowledge and skills of
instrumental techniques, tone production, musical interpretation and solo/ensemble
performance.
The student will continue the in-depth study of the basic fundamentals of music to
include the areas of symbolic notation and reading, rhythmic and melodic drill, music
theory, and music history.

Jazz Ensemble
The purpose of the Jazz Ensemble is to provide the student with the opportunity
for directed study in the various elements of jazz music and its performance. Jazz is a
unique American art form and a vital part of American heritage. Students have an
opportunity for creative musicianship and self-expression in jazz performance through
studies of ensemble playing, improvisation, and solo playing. Participation in Jazz
Ensemble also tends to improve concert and marching band where students apply
leadership, expertise and heightened awareness of contemporary music in today’s society.
This class is open to any student upon recommendation and/or audition by the
band director. The size of the ensemble will be limited to a logical and balanced
instrumentation.
Musicianship requirements will include advanced knowledge of scale
fundamentals, interpretation skills, good tone production and/or percussion skills, and
advanced instrumental techniques.
The student will be expected to expand his/her knowledge and skills of
instrumental techniques, tone production, musical interpretation and solo/ensemble
performance.
The student will continue the in-depth study of the basic fundamentals of music to
include the areas of symbolic notation and reading, rhythmic and melodic drill, music
theory, and music history as it pertains to jazz studies and jazz interpretation.
Repertoire in the Jazz Ensemble will include the study and performance of jazz
literature including blues, rock, fusion, Latin and big band. Improvisational skills will be
developed through the study of advanced music theory, including major, minor, blues,
and pentatonic scales, the use of modes, complex harmonic structures, and compositional
skills.
The Jazz Ensemble is performance oriented and will be active in concert
appearances and other events including VBODA events.
The band director will endeavor to instill in each student a sense of pride in the
group, thereby encouraging appropriate conduct and etiquette in both performance and
non-performance settings. Proper care of and respect for music, instruments, equipment,
uniforms and facilities will be emphasized.
The following proficiency levels are prescribed as goals to be met by the
band student with an average of 225 minutes of instruction per week. Classes meet
regularly on an A/B Block schedule.

Marching Band
The purpose of the Marching Band is to provide a musical experience and
opportunity for performance not found in a concert band setting. Marching Band is a unique
art form – a synthesis of music, movement and graphic design. It reinforces the
developmental attitude of self pride, team work, self-discipline, E’sprit de Corps and
excellence of musicality. It affords a way to provide service to enhancement of the life of the
school and community.
1. Membership
The Marching Band is an extracurricular activity, and as such student
membership will be comprised mainly of students in the instrumental program
with provision for students who wish to participate and who encounter
schedule conflicts which cannot be resolved. Members of auxiliary units may
also include students not in the instrumental program.
The number of students eligible for Marching Band is determined by the
instrumentation required to produce a balanced musical sound. It is suggested
that students wishing to be considered for membership, complete and submit
an application with the director. The selection process may include an
audition and/or consultation with the band director.
Marching members are required to attend the school summer band camp. In
addition, attendance at after-school rehearsals and performances is required.
Required performances for the Marching Band include home football games
as determined by school administration. Performances at marching band
competitions and other events are recommended, but not required.
2. Goals
The Student will:
A. Develop and perfect artistry in movement skills as related to
musical performance.
B. Demonstrate the standard posture for executing marching band
movements.
C. Demonstrate proper playing positions necessary to the performance
of a variety of marching music.
D. Demonstrate proper attitudes and self-discipline, group co-
operation and leadership necessary in marching band participation.
E. Demonstrate a high degree of musicality including tone production,
technique, and rhythmic proficiency while executing movement
skills.
F. Develop an understanding of the elements of rhythm as they are
related to movement.
