California State University, Northridge Mike Curb College of Arts, Media, and Communication Department of Music Concert Band Auditions: 2020–2021 CSUN Wind Ensemble & CSUN Wind Symphony FLUTE Audition Repertory: For each composition, perform the excerpt between the two black arrows. 1. Richard Wagner/Cailliet, Elsa,s Procession to the Cathedral 2. Arturo Márquez/Nickel, Danzón No. 2 3. Leonard Bernstein/Polster, Four Dances from “West Side Story” Flute Performance majors, please also prepare the PICCOLO excerpt: 4. Percy Grainger, Lincolnshire Posy Note well: Perform the excerpts in order. Play upper line on any divisi. Skip over multi-measure rests. It is important to familiarize yourself with the band works from which the excerpts are taken. Listen to multiple recordings of the works to help understand style, context, and tempo possibilities. Use YouTube, Spotify, iTunes, etc. as valuable resources for recordings. Prepare each excerpt to the best of your ability. Special Considerations for Fall 2020 due to COVID-19: Both the Wind Ensemble and the Wind Symphony will likely be split into “mini bands” for the Fall 2020 semester. Details are still being formulated. Consequently, placement auditions might be required again in December or January in advance of the Spring 2021 semester. Your assignment into a particular concert band will take into account (1) your audition, and (2) the need to form multiple mini-band ensembles and equally distribute students between the two concert bands. The number of students assigned to a particular band might be different than in past semesters. The Music Department has received administrative approval so that some ensembles — including both Wind Ensemble and Wind Symphony — can meeting on campus. Students who are accepted into a concert band but are not comfortable coming to campus for rehearsals may still participate in a band through virtual/remote rehearsals. During these final weeks of summer vacation, our University administrators may decide to rescind their earlier decisions and prohibit in-person rehearsals altogether. If this should happen we will simply continue band rehearsals from home for everyone. Either way, Wind Ensemble & Wind Symphony will persevere! Audition results will be E-mailed to all students by Sunday, August 23 (the day before classes begin).
