GeneralDescriptionThe 8.0 K-factor, Model CHEC (Con-cealed Horizontal Extended Cover-age), Quick Response Light Hazard,Sidewall Sprinklers are decorative, 3mm bulb type sprinklers featuring aunique cover plate designed to con-ceal the sprinkler. It is the best choicefor architecturally sensitive areas suchas dormitories, hotel rooms, receptionareas, office buildings, banquet facili-ties, conference rooms, and hospitals.

The soft contour of the cover plateoptimizes a low profile while blendingin with surrounding surfaces. Theplate, while maintaining a fast re-sponse sensitivity has been specifi-cally designed without vent holes toincrease its aesthetic appeal while

helping to avoid objects from beinghung from the sprinkler (i.e., garmentbags, clothes hangers, etc.) that mightotherwise cause an inadvertent opera-tion.

They are designed for installationalong a wall or the side of a beam andbeneath a smooth and level ceiling.Horizontal sidewall sprinklers are com-monly used in lieu of pendent or up-right sprinklers because of aestheticsor building construction considera-tions where piping across the ceiling isnot desirable.

They are intended for use in automaticsprinkler systems designed in accord-ance with standard installation rules(e.g., NFPA 13) for light hazard occu-pancies. The fast response thermalsensitivity rating of the Model CHECSprinklers provides for a quick re-

sponse extended coverage rating up toa 16 ft. x 22 ft. coverage area.

Each unit includes a Cover Plate As-sembly that conceals the sprinkler op-erating components. The separabletwo-piece design of the Cover Plateand Support Cup Assemblies allowsinstallation of the sprinklers and pres-sure testing of the fire protection sys-tem prior to the installation of the wallor application of a finish coating.

Also, the separable push-on andthread-off two-piece design of the theSprinkler provides for 1/2 inch (12,7mm) of horizontal adjustment.

The Model CHEC Sprinklers areshipped with a Protective Cap. TheProtective Cap is temporarily removedfor installation, and it must be replacedto help protect the sprinkler while thewall is being plastered, wallpapered,or painted. When thewall installation iscomplete the Protective Cap must beremoved and the Cover Plate Assem-bly installed. The Protective Cap mustbe removed to ensure proper perform-ance of the sprinklers.

    WARNINGS

OperationWhen exposed to heat from a fire, theCover Plate, which is soldered to theRetainer at three points, falls away toexpose the Sprinkler Assembly.

The glass bulb contains a fluid thatexpands when exposed to heat. Whenthe rated temperature is reached, thefluid expands sufficiently to shatter theglass bulb, activating the sprinkler andallowing water to flow.

DesignCriteriaThe Model CHEC Sprinklers are ULand C-UL Listed for use in light hazardoccupancies, using the design criteriain Table A, in addition to the require-ments specified in thecurrent NFPA 13

    for extended coverage sidewall sprin-klers.

The Model CHEC Sprinklers are onlylisted and approved with the ModelCHEC Cover Plates having a factoryapplied finish.

InstallationThe Model CHEC Sprinklers must beinstalled in accordance with the follow-ing instructions:

NOTESDo not install any bulb type sprinkler ifthe bulb is cracked or there is a loss of

liquid from the bulb. With the sprinklerheld horizontally, a small air bubbleshould be present. The diameter of theair bubble is approximately 1/16 inch(1,6 mm).

A leak tight 3/4 inch NPT sprinkler jointshould be obtained with a torque of 10to 20 ft.lbs. (13,4 to 26,8 Nm). A maxi-mum of 30 ft.lbs. (40,7 Nm) of torqueis to be used to install sprinklers with3/4 NPT connections. Higher levels oftorque may distort the sprinkler inletwith consequent leakage or impair-ment of the sprinkler.

Do not attempt to compensate for in-sufficient adjustment in the SprinklerAssembly by under- or over-tighteningthe Sprinkler/Support Cup Assembly.Readjust the position of the sprinklerfitting to suit.

Step 1. The sprinkler must only beinstalled with its centerline perpen-dicular to the back wall and parallel tothe ceiling. The word TOP on the de-flector is to face towards the ceiling.

Step 2. Remove the Protective Cap.

NOTEDo not remove the Sprinkler Strap(Fig. 1) until the sprinkler system is tobe placed in service.

Step 3. With pipe thread sealant ap-plied to the pipe threads, hand tightenthe sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting.

Step 4. Wrench tighten the sprinklerusing only the W-Type 7 Wrench (Ref.

Step 5. Replace the Protective Cap(Ref. Figure 4) by pushing it inwardsuntil it bottoms out against the Support

Cup. The Protective Cap helps preventdamage to the Sprinkler to help protectthe sprinkler while the wall is beingplastered, wallpapered, or painted.

NOTEAs long as the Sprinkler Strap (Fig. 1)or the Protective Cap (Fig. 4) remainsin place, the system is considered tobe Out of Service.

Step 6. After the wall has been com-pleted with the nominal 2-1/2 inch(63,5 mm)diameter mounting hole andin preparation for installing the CoverPlate Assembly, remove and discardthe Protective Cap and the Sprinkler

    NOTES

    1. Backwall (where sprinkler is located) by sidewall (length of throw).

    2. Requirement is based on minimum flow in GPM from each sprinkler. The indicated residual pressures are based on the nominalK-factor.

    3. The centerline of the sprinkler waterway is located 7/16 inch (11,1 mm) below the deflector (Ref. Figure 2).

    4. Minimum spacing is for lateral distance between sprinklers located along a single wall. Otherwise adjacent sprinklers (i.e., sidewallsprinklers on an adjacent wall, on an opposite wall, or pendent sprinklers) must be located outside of the maximum listed protectionarea of the extended coverage sidewall sprinkler being utilized.

spect to the wall by turning the CoverPlate/Retainer Assembly clockwiseuntil its flange just comes in contactwith the wall.

If it becomes necessary to remove theCover Plate, it can be removed by un-screwing in a counter-clockwise direc-

tion.If the Cover Plate/Retainer Assemblycannot be engaged with the SupportCup or the Cover Plate/Retainer As-sembly cannot be engaged sufficientlyto contact the wall, the Sprinkler Fittingmust be repositioned.

Care andMaintenanceThe Model CHEC Sprinklers must bemaintained and serviced in accord-ance with the following instructions:

NOTESWhen properly installed, there is anominal 5/32 inch (4,0 mm) air gapbetween the lip of the Cover Plate andthe ceiling, as shown in Figure 2. Thisair gap is necessary for proper opera-tion of the sprinkler. If the wall is to berepainted after the installation of theSprinkler, care must be exercised toensure that the new paint does NOTseal off any of the air gap.

Factory painted Cover Plates MUSTNOT be repainted. They should be re-placed, i f necessary, by factorypainted units.

Do not pull the Cover Plate relative tothe Enclosure. Separation may result.

Before closing a fire protection systemmain control valve for maintenancework on the fire protection system thatit controls, permission to shutdown theaffected fire protection system must beobtained from the proper authoritiesand all personnel who may be affectedby this action must be notified.

Sprinklers that are found to be leakingor exhibiting visible signs of corrosionmust be replaced.

    Automatic sprinklers must never be

painted, plated, coated or otherwisealtered after leaving the factory. Modi-f ied sprinklers must be replaced.Sprinklers that have been exposed tocorrosive products of combustion, buthave not operated, should be replacedif they cannot be completely cleanedby wiping the sprinkler with a cloth orby brushing it with a soft bristle brush.

Care must be exercised to avoid dam-age to the sprinklers - before, during, and after installation. Sprinklers dam-aged by dropping, striking, wrenchtwist/slippage, or the like, must be re-

placed. Also, replace any sprinkler thathas a cracked bulb or that has lostliquid from its bulb. (Ref. InstallationSection).

If a sprinkler must be removed, do notreinstall it or a replacement withoutreinstalling the Cover Plate Assembly.

If a Cover Plate Assembly becomesdislodged during service, replace it im-mediately.

The owner is responsible for the in-spection, testing, and maintenance oftheir fire protection system and de-vices in compliance with this docu-ment, as well as with the applicablestandards of the National Fire Protec-tion Association (e.g., NFPA 25), inaddition to the standards of any otherauthorities having jurisdiction. The in-stalling contractor or sprinkler manu-facturer should be contacted relative toany questions.

It is recommended that automaticsprinkler systems be inspected, tested, and maintained by a qualifiedInspection Service in accordance withlocal requirements and/or nationalcodes.
