Fisica in moto - The bridge between school and businessesFisica in Moto (physics on motorcycles), located at the historical Ducati factory in Borgo Panigale, is the interactive didactic physics laboratory dedicated specifically to high school students. The purpose of the laboratory is to build a bridge between schools and businesses through the experience of science and technology museums. Specifically designed and custom-built interactive machines will be used inside the laboratory to demonstrate the principles of physics that students learn at school, as well as phsyics’ relationship with a Ducati MotoGP bike. The whole course has been developed with the collaboration of the professors from Bologna’s Malpighi high school and university lecturers.

Clorofilla - interactive installation“The existence on planet earth can be traced back to a cycle of Energy. Light as a primary source, feeds the plant world because of

photosynthesis. In the transformationof its stages of existence, the plant represents what future men’ feeding requires. Clorofilla wants to simulate this cycle through a digital representation of the relationship between light / plant world. The viewer, pointing a light source toward a plant, will become an active part of the birth and the death of this life cycle.”

The viewer, by directing a light (torch phone, lighter or otherwise) toward a plant in the installation, activates a light detection procedure (on/off) that creates a digital tree.The tree is designed on L -System grammars, for the generation of real botanical forms and its growth is due to irradiation of the particles themselves. At the interruption of the light beam, the particles disappear and the system shuts down slowly.

Cappella Santa Maria dei CarceratiPalazzo Re EnzoCappella Santa Maria dei Carcerati (Chapel of Saint Mary of Prisoners), built in 1371, was the place in which to receive spiritual comfort for those who were imprisoned in the nearby Palazzo del Capitano. In 2003, the British artist David Tremlett (1945 - present) has realized one of his wall drawings, entitled “A New Light”, combining the art of the past with the current abstraction.

Sala and Cappella FarnesePalazzo d’AccursioSala Farnese is located on the second floor and it was built as it is today in 1665 by Cardinal Girolamo Farnese. It was formerly called the “control room” probably because in the adjoining Cappella del Legato (now Cappella Farnese) Charles V of the Holy Roman Empire was crowned King of Italy with the Iron Crown in 1530. The frescoes of the Cappella Farnese are by Prospero Fontana in 1562 while the decorations of Sala Farnese portray the vicissitudes of the city from the Middle Ages to the seventeenth century. The large painting on the wall immediately to the right of the entrance of the hall portrays the vicissitudes of the city of Bologna of the time under the French domination. It depicts the extravagant ceremony that the sovereigns of France (later imitated by the kings of England and Hungary) used to host at court, in the presence of the highest ecclesiastical and aristocratic circles. During these celebrations they claimed to exercise their miraculous powers by laying their hands on the neck of the people affected by the so-called “sore neck” (French for “marcou”), a form of purulent tuberculosis which in the long centuries of the Middle Ages frequently affected people of any social condition. The fresco depicts King Francis I of France, visiting Bologna, on 15th December, 1515, while he touches the scrofulae of a group of Italian subjects. The healing power of the kings of England and France, known to history as “the touch of scrofula”, came from an insistent propaganda of secular and ecclesiastical court reporters. To gain the favor of their sovereigns, they argued in their writings, making use of their wise science, that the holders of temporal power had received the power to heal the disease directly from God since the earliest times.

Biblioteca Sala BorsaBiblioteca Sala Borsa (Sala Borsa Library), which opened in December 2001, is a fascinating cultural and multimedia space inside Palazzo d’Accursio, the “quasi castle “, and ancient home of the Municipality of the city.Under the crystal of the covered square, you can admire the ancient excavations and sedimentation of the various civilizations thus reviving centuries of history: from the earliest settlements of huts of the Villanovan culture of the seventh century BC, to the Etruscan Felsina and the Roman Bononia founded in 189 BC.

In 1568, Ulisse Aldrovandi transformed this place into Botanic Gardens with beds of geometric shapes and taking care of the cultivation of medicinal herbs of medieval classification. Considered essential for any good pharmacopoeia for about 50 years, they enriched the Botanic Gardens together with exotic species from India, Africa and the Americas: a true natural laboratory for experiments, which contributed to the birth of modern botany.In 1587, Francesco Morandi, said “Terribilia “ , on top of the tank for watering built a lovely Corinthian niche, transferred later in 1886 in the courtyard of the Art Gallery during the construction of the future Sala Borsa (a replica of the work is visible today in the well courtyard of Palazzo d’Accursio).In 1870, the City Council determined to allocate the part of the garden bordering the side of the square of the Neptune to the building of a semi-circular structure, and to use this part as a center of the town’s

economic and social life. Entrepreneurs in Bologna, members of the organizing committee of that drafted the new Sala Borsa’s project, intended to build in place of the garden, the courtyard and the tank, a new building for the trading of the stock exchange, market operations and trade. The initiative also aimed to regulate the consolidated use of public spaces and discourage the habit of traders from Bologna to bargain outdoors in Mercato di Mezzo and across Piazza Maggiore. That is why the Apostolic Palace, five centuries old, was demolished to make way for the iron structure of the Sala Borsa, most admired and innovative. Between 1883-1886, the pavilion was built of cast iron and glass that still keeps the original structure in a basilica with a large central body illuminated bya skylight. The use of iron in the realization of the decorative parts was a genius and a slight premonition of the Art Nouveau style, readily identifiable in the small rosettes decorations.

After World War II and until the 60s, the covered square is transformed into a modern indoor sports arena, hosting basketball games, and even boxing matches. Animated during the day by normal business operations, the place was cleaned in the evening and baskets were assembled for team training. On match days the side galleries are filled with fans and the covered square becomes a real den of lions. Inside the Torrione del Canton dei Fiori, an ancient fortress on the north side of the building, the first and perhaps only Theatre of Puppets, the famous “Teatrén di buratén”, was inaugurated in 1976, with Demetrius Presini as director .

Later the building became the seat of the administrative offices of the Municipalityof Bologna, allocating the covered squareto a cultural function.

The lapidary sectionMedieval Civic MuseumThe lapidary section of the Medieval Civic Museum – already set up in the second courtyard of Palazzo Galvani – includes a collection of different pieces, gathered after renovations of churches and monuments, excavations and demolitions, often as donations.In particular, they are epigraphs and stone emblems, which constitute the core of the collection, and were the the objects of the first setting-up phase within the halls corresponding to the stalls of PalazzoGhisilardi. There are also architectural elements: columns and capitals, including a rare series from the early Middle Ages made of selenite; terracotta and sandstone decorative elements (frames, corbels, ornaments, ferrules) collected thanks to donation or purchase between 1920 and 1924; The collection can contribute to the study of construction materials, particularly to the history of cotto bolognese (a particular terracotta of Bologna). The epigraphs are grouped by topics: evidence of the work and of various buildings; sepulchral inscriptions; the city walls of Bologna; 16th and 17th century epigraphs of various subjects; the emblems

without inscriptions are grouped on a single wall, except the Della Rovere emblem. The inscription of Ostiario Martino is the most ancient funerary inscription and it is located in the entrance hall.The text of Aelia Laelia Crispis’ headstone is an example of and hermetic and emblematic culture, with a subtle playful element, that was very popular among the 16th-century educated circles of Bologna. The “Stone of Bologna” had an extraordinary success also among scholars and travellers of the time,some even said that this object alone would make the city famous. Many authors did their utmost to naively decipher its “enigma”, whereas the name of Aelia found its place in encyclopedic dictionaries. Romanticism ignited a new interest for the inscription and and paved the way for its entrance in European literature (Walter Scott, Gérard de Neval). The headstone fortunately has survivedthe 1943 bombings.The Della Rovere emblem dates from the first half of the sixteenth century. It is almost certain that it must be viewed in relation to the presence in Bologna of Pope Julius II, a member of the Della Rovere family. The high quality of the piece, which can be seen despite the precarious state of conservation, suggests that it was in relation to an important building commission. The places with which it is probably related could be the Fortress of Porta Galliera or Palazzo Comunale.The headstone has a copy made by Senatore Achille Volta.

The Medieval Civic MuseumSince 1985 the Medieval Civic Museum has been housed in the Palazzo Ghisilardi, one of the most important buildings from the period when Bologna was under the dominion of the Bentivoglio family (1446 - 1506). The objects in the museum come from several important private collections that date as far back as the seventeenth century, including the

encyclopedic collection of natural and artificial wonders collected by the Marquis Ferdinando Cospi, General Luigi Ferdinando Marsili’s collection of weapons and other objects, and the collection of the artist Pelagio Palagi.The most important objects in the museum provide a sense of Bolognese medieval life and range from exemplars of high medieval craftmanship of the seventh through ninth centuries to the large statue of Boniface VIII in gilded copper plate, wich was executed by Manno Bandini da Siena (1301) to commemorate the effort made by the pope bring an end to the war between Bologna and Ferrara.Near the statue of Boniface VIII, is on display large cope with Stories of the Life of Christ. This is one of the most significant surviving examples of opus anglicanum.

During the Middle Ages it was a common practice in Bologna, as in other major university cities, to dedicate sculpted funerary monuments to the professors who taught at the institution. The museum holds a number of monumental tombs, many of which portray the teacher as he lectures to his students.The museum’s collections is enriched by a wide range of ivories from France and Italy, precious glass from Murano, prized arms, numerous and rare objects from the court of the Bentivoglio family wich are significant exemplars of refined fifteenth-century Ferrarese craftsmanship. Much space in the museum is given over to Renaissance and Baroque bronze sculptures by artists working in Bologna (the model for the statue of Nettuno by Giambologna, Algardi’s Saint Michael Archengel and Bernini’s bust of Gregorio XV Ludovisi) and the art of Bolognese illuminated books work, with celebrated examples of choir books, statues of the art guilds and liturgical books from the thirteenth through sixteenth centuries.

The “Vecchia Scuola Bolognese” is a special cooking school which uses cooking as a driving force to develop other skills. In the study visit the following activities will be seen at work:- A school group who will learn through the cooking to know one of the main aspects of Italy (food). The children’s activities are also designed to develop skills such as being able to wait, following the rules, being respectful towards one’s peers, accepting advice and listening.- The class of “professionals” who, coming from a working past of different kinds, decided to develop their skills in the art of cooking.- A guide who will illustrate the team building processes which this firm creates through cooking classes and fun activities, hence managing to break down barriers between workers and to stimulate dialogue and collaboration.

Lunar DinnerThe Lunar Society of Birmingham was a dinner club and informal learned society of prominent figures in the Midlands Enlightenment, including industrialists, natural philosophers and intellectuals, who met regularly between 1765 and 1813 in Birmingham, England. At first called the Lunar Circle, “Lunar Society” became the formal name by 1775. The name arose because the society would meet duringthe full moon, as the extra light made the journey home easier and safer in the absence of street lighting. The members cheerfully referred to themselves as “lunaticks”, a pun on lunatics.The Lunar Society evolved through various degrees of organisation over a period of up to fifty years, but was only ever an informal group. No constitution, minutes, publications or membership lists survive from any period, and evidence of its existence and activities is found only in the correspondence and notes of those associated with it. Historians therefore disagree on what qualifies as membership of the Lunar Society, who can be considered to have been members, and even when the society can be said to have existed. Josiah Wedgwood, for example, is described by some commentators as being one of five “principal members” of the society,while others consider that he “cannot be recognized as [a] full member” at all. Dates given for the establishment of the society

range from “sometime before 1760” to 1775. Some historians argue that it had ceased to exist by 1791; others that it was still operating as late as 1813.Despite this uncertainty, fourteen individuals have been identified as having verifiably attended Lunar Society meetings regularly over a long period during its most productive eras: these are Matthew Boulton, Erasmus Darwin, Thomas Day, Richard Lovell Edgeworth, Samuel Galton, Jr., James Keir, Joseph Priestley, William Small, Jonathan Stokes, James Watt, Josiah Wedgwood, John Whitehurst and William Withering.The Lunar Society was meeting for Lunar Dinner, where before each dish they were debating about philosophy, arts, science and commerce.

Eden Theatre - I Portici HotelThe Eden Theatre, decorated with original Liberty frescoes that follow the Belle Epoque style, is the striking headquarters of the I Portici Restaurant, awarded with a Michelin Star in 2013. The theater, which at the turn of 18th and 19th centuries was the old café chantant Eden Kursaal, described as “the temple of the variety in Bologna” and hosted the performances of the most famous vedettes at the time, has been closed for decades and brought back to its former glory thanks to the restoration of Palazzo Maccaferri, home to the I Portici Hotel.

Lamborghini museum factoryFounded in 1963, Automobili Lamborghini is headquartered in Sant’Agata Bolognese, in the area of Bologna. There it manufactures some of the world’s most sought-after super sports cars. With the presentation of the Huracán LP 610-4, Lamborghini offers a new dimension in luxury super sports cars. With 122 dealerships worldwide, Automobili Lamborghini is building on a succession of dynamic and elegant super sports cars including the 350GT, Miura, Espada, Countach, Diablo, Murciélago, Reventón Coupe, Reventón Roadster, Aventador and Gallardo. Automobili Lamborghini is committed to adapting its economic and business goals to embrace the concept of environmental protection and the ongoing improvement of environmental conditionsand energy efficiency. Automobili Lamborghini is developing an integrated strategy for environmental protection based on innovation of processes and products.This commitment includes the target of reducing by 35 percent the CO2 emissions of Lamborghini cars and become CO2 neutral by 2015. In 2012, the inauguration of the new building dedicated to developing prototypes and pre-series cars is part of this commitment. It is the first industrial building in Italy to be certified in energy class A. The building will be equipped with a photovoltaic system that will cover the annual energy need, allowing

it to be CO2-neutral. This requirement will become a standard for all new buildings in the Lamborghini Headquarters. In 2011, Lamborghini Park was also inaugurated, as a part of the “Lamborghini for Biodiversity - Research Project Forest Oaks”, which included the planting of over 10,000 young oak trees in an area of approximately 70,000 square meters in the town of Sant’Agata Bolognese. The installation of a 17,000 square meters photovoltaic system guarantees a reduction of 1,552 tons of CO2 per year. Automobili Lamborghini is developing, implementing and monitoring the best use of natural resources and the protection of human health through an Environmental Management System in accordance with international standards UNI EN ISO 14001 and EN ISO 50001. Last but not least, Automobili Lamborghini is the first car manufacturer in Italy to have obtained ISO 50001 certification (October 2011), which confirms the company’s commitment to ongoing improvement of the energy performance in all areas of activity.

San Luca Porticos and #unpassopersanlucaTerritorial identity: when the communication pass through the crowdfunding San Luca and its porticos are one of the most loved symbols from citizien and tourists. Why? Because it is the symbol of the community and the pride of Bologna. Women and men, in 1677, transported the construction materials with a long braid: from the walls of the city to Colle della Guardia, brick by brick. Today, the portico needs to be restored, but the work is too massive... what to do?In this study visit it will be possible to walk under the arcades of St. Luke and follow the guided tour organized specifically for some donors of #unpassopersanluca, the crowdfunding project run by GINGER. Throughout the itinerary one of the founders will tell how GINGER was born, the growth and progress of the “bottom-up”fundraising project: a great tool to awaken the pride of the city, developing a sense of civic duty and raise this monument as a World Heritage Site.

Bologna City of Music: when musical notes combine art and historyBologna is not a city made for stop-and-go tourism. It unveils itself gradually and keeps its treasures hidden, sometimes even to its citizen: small and guarded beauties that history scattered all around the local area. This is why the art and culture operators prefer to open the less well known locations which do not fail to amaze as the cultural activities.

The Oratory of San Rocco is dedicated to the Patron Saint and healer of the plague-strick-en. Inside you can see 11 invaluable frescos painted by some pupils of Carracci from 1618 about saint’s life. The coffered ceiling, giving illusion effects, was made be wellknown artists, such as Canuti and Cavedoni. The ones representing the Virtues, the city’s patrons, the doctors of the Church and the Evangelists are really remarkable.

In 2006 Bologna was appointed UNESCO Creative City of Music: a prestigious recognition that honours the city’s rich musical tradition and also the very lively contemporary scene. In Bologna music is part of the city’s identity and is also the driving force behind the economic development of the local area.

12.00 am – 1.30 pmStudy Visit:MAMbo and the legacyof Artefiera and Art City:Bologna’s museum of contemporary artand Rachel Whiteread’s Study for RoomThanks to ART CITY (the off events of Artefiera, one of the main national art fair), MAMbo museum presents a selection of Rachel Whiteread’s works ranging from 1991 to 2006 and two new drawings specially made for this occasion which are exhibited in the spaces of the Museo Morandi.Known for her elegant and poetic sculptures in resin and plaster, Rachel Whiteread explores the architecture, the space, the absence and the memory. With her creations, the British artist is particularly close to the Morandi’s work: like him she pays attention to the intimate spaces and objects of everyday life, emphasizing the negative and revealing the gaps around them.

Thanks to this study visit, it is also possible to see with one’s own eyes the successful regeneration and conversion process of industrial buildings into the city’s museum of contemporary art.The transformation of the old municipality bakery (built in 1915 by Mayor of Bologna Francesco Zanardi, aimed at solving the citizens of Bologna’s supply problems during World War I and closed in 1935) in the new home of MAMbo started in the second half of the Nineties. The recovery project took place with a special care to the respect and enhancement of the existing architectural features. The restoration, conceived by Aldo Rossi, was commissioned by the city of Bologna to Finanziaria Bologna Metropolitana, with the help of Studio Arassociati Milan.
