IT skills and services are needed increasingly in all industries. From finance to healthcare, retail to tourism or business services, an IT qualification will diversify your career options. An IT qualification from Computer Power Plus will transform you into an internationally respected IT professional with the skills to obtain your dream career anywhere.

Be in demand by employers

• IT professionals are in high demand and earn a higher than average salary. The median salary (full & part-time incomes) in New Zealand is $45,8641 while the median IT salary is $82,0002. High IT salaries are fueled by the chronic shortage of skilled IT workers in New Zealand and many companies are forced to hire from overseas to fill their vacancies.

• IT qualifications provide greater job security.

• IT career pathways can lead to rapid career progression.

“Tech professionals in New Zealand are some of the happiest in the world, with 85% believing their current workplace is a good place to be and 91% considering their work / life balance to be either average or above.” Source: Job Seeker Insight Report February 2015 – www.absoluteit.co.nz

“After many years in retail and realising that for my financial aspirations I needed to educate myself in an area of interest – It was the key. At computer Power Plus I enjoyed being able to learn at my own pace with their self-directed learning model. I’m proud to state that as a result I completed my qualification 330 hours ahead of schedule.

Working at MYoB I find that many of the things I learnt at cPP are highly relevant. I would definitely recommend cPP to others wanting to get into It.”

The self-directed learning environment offered by Computer Power Plus allows you to take control of your own learning. You study on campus, following a personalised schedule agreed to at enrolment. All the resources you require are supplied to you and qualified, experienced instructors are on hand to support you in working through your qualification.

Unlike a traditional school, you will not be learning in a classroom with one teacher, taking you through a topic at a time. Instead you will be working on an open training floor at your own work station. This means that you can study at a faster pace and not be held back by students who are learning more slowly. Most students find that there are topics that they find much easier than others.

Studying full-time within our business environment simulates a normal working day on the job. This is based on a campus study shift of five hours per day with another two and a half hours spent studying either at home or in the library each day.

Computer Power Plus’s blended learning strategy provides for both theory and hands-on practical experience.

We provide:• On campus eLearning and practical exercises with personal tuition from our qualified and experienced instructors.• Microsoft Imagine Academy - free access to Microsoft E-learning and Dreamspark Premium. • On-campus computer lab facilities.• Field-site training (work experience) for Diploma in Network Engineering and Diploma in Systems Technology students.• Opportunities for self-assessment – Computer Power Plus tests and assessments.• Training towards internationally recognised IT vendor certifications (See page 28 for full list).

Our unique learning approachComputer Power Plus delivers a unique ‘student-centred’ learning model which is used at all three campuses.

Professional development programmeTo assist you in achieving the goal of obtaining your ideal job upon graduation, we have developed a comprehensive and focused professional development programme.

Computer Power Plus has the experience and knowledge of the ICT industry to support students in becoming the IT professionals employers demand. With dedication, students graduate from Computer Power Plus technically proficient and able to work as a dynamic team member.

At Computer Power Plus, our expert placement consultants have already helped to place thousands of graduates in employment and now it’s your turn! (See page 28 for more information on our Graduate Job Placement Programme).

Our professional development programme will assist you to:

• Build on your self-management skills.• Learn essential interpersonal skills including communication and teamwork.• Write powerful resumes and know who to send them to for maximum impact.• Become familiar with interview skills and techniques.• Access the hidden job market.• Benefit from our individual mentoring and support services.

Dress codeOur aim at Computer Power Plus (CPP) is to help you prepare for a professional career in IT. Towards this goal, CPP requires that students dress professionally as they would be at work. Not only does this help to create a professional environment, but it also encourages a more focused and serious mindset when studying. We also have corporate, placement and networking clients come to our premises and students may be called upon to be available for job interviews at short notice. Your opportunities for employment will be maximised if you are dressed accordingly.

The qualification structure and study processEach of our qualifications is made up of a series of courses. These courses are made up of one or more modules (equivalent to subjects or units). In each module there are many learning activities (or lessons) and assessments. Learning activities may include:

• working at the computer• studying texts• watching eLearning videos

Assessments may include (these are compulsory):• exam-based assessments• project based assessments• competencies

For each module there is a Learning Guide, a booklet which shows you all of the activities involved in learning that topic along with the learning plan you should follow. In general you will be studying only one module at a time. When you finish each module there is normally an assessment of your competencies on all of the material in that module. When you complete a module you move on to the next, building towards your qualification.

•doing progress check tests•working with your instructor

• role plays •practice (mini) tests

“cPP’s learning environment is so much better than at school or polytech. If I need help with my studies I can just email the instructors from my computer and they will come and assist you on the computer floor. I also like that getting help is discreet and that I don’t have to put up my hand. I really liked studying at cPP that once I graduated with the certificate I decided to enrol in the Diploma in systems technology.”

Evelyn Devi-Chand

“Before coming to cPP, I was studying for the first year of my Bcom at university but found I didn’t enjoy the lecture theatre environment, stressful study load and the 3-year commitment. My friend sarah recommended I study at cPP instead. I liked the idea of studying It, as I still wanted to work in an office but be able to earn more money than a typical office role.”

“As an experienced business person returning to full-time study I chose computer Power Plus for four reasons.

First, the study regime is like a business or office environment rather than like being back at ‘school’ (which I’m too old for); second, self-tuition means I can get ‘stuck in’ to my studies and make progress without waiting round for classes and terms to commence; third, practical ‘hands-on’ implementation of computer skills - not just book learning but applying your learning and; lastly, a full-time, on-site placement consultant to support your job search.”

Q. Do I have the right to refuse a position that I am offered?Yes. However, you may be refusing an excellent opportunity to put your IT skills into practice and launch your new career. Sometimes it is better to take a job in a good company and see what opportunities you can gain during employment. Then once you have work experience behind you, you can further specialise in your next job. Quite often, it is difficult to know what a job in IT would be like without giving it a try.

Q. During my studies, can I receive placement assistance? You are only eligible for job placement assistance once you have completed your studies. The job preparation modules are held throughout your course, finishing with an intensive job search programme. This means there’s no delay in starting the job search once you have graduated.

Q. How do I become one of the many successful graduates who find work?Your opportunities to apply the technical skills you have learned will depend very largely on your enthusiasm and how you approach your job search and the job itself. At Computer Power Plus, you will receive guidance on effective ways to approach these situations, and you may find how useful these principles can be in many other areas of activity, including study. Placement Assistance is a three-prong activity: 1) You look for employment, 2) We look together and 3) We look for you. Many graduates find jobs through their own efforts.

Q. How long will it take for me to find employment? The length of time it takes varies from days to months. It tends to be dependent on a combination of job search strategy planning during the course, attitude of the graduate, performance at interviews, and number of relevant vacancies available at that time of graduation.

Q. What if I am a more mature graduate? How quickly you find employment depends on your background and attitude. However, more mature candidates can bring a great deal of skills, knowledge and experience to their new employer. We have had great success over the years in placing mature graduates. Additionally, many mature graduates have succeeded in starting their own businesses.

“the modules covered in my Diploma were very diverse and gave me a great understanding of the way things work in the It industry. I had a lot of hands-on experience with a variety of systems and tools. this is why cPP graduates are sought after in the It industry and one of the main reasons why I got the first job I applied for.”
