Exploring How Technology Has Changed Communication
Written by: N Nayab • Edited by: Ginny Edwards
Published Jul 24, 2010 • Related Guides: Electronic Technology | Mobile Phone How has technology
changed communication? Throughout history developments in technology and communications have
gone hand-in-hand, and the latest technological developments such as the internet have resulted in the
advancement of the science of communication to a new level.
The process of human communication has evolved over the years, with many path-breaking inventions
and discoveries heralding revolutions or a lift from one level to another.
The invention of pictographs or the first written communication in the ancient world heralded written
communication. These writings were on stone, and remained immobile.
The invention of paper, papyrus, and wax, culminating in the invention of the printing press in the 15th
century made possible transfer of documents from one place to another, allowing for uniformity of
languages over long distances.
![Page 24: Computer in Education.](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022020320/568bd7271a28ab20349eb2f7/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
Running head: ELECTRONIC PORTFOLIO 24
The latest revolution is the widespread application of electronic technology such as electronic waves
and signals to communication, manifesting in the electronic creation and transfer of documents over the
World Wide Web.
Speed and Costs of Communication
The most significant impact of technology on communication is the spread of the internet and the
possibility of sending emails and chatting. In the pre-information technology days, a document often
required re-typing on the typewriter before the final version. Sending the letter across to someone else
required a visit to the post office and a postage stamp. Faster methods such as telegrams had severe
limitations in text, and remained costly.
Project Mgmt Office (PMO) www.Metier.com Starting a PMO? Download our Free PMO White Papers!
Ads by Google Computers and the internet have made easy the process of creating and editing
documents and applying features such as spell check and grammar check automatically. Email allows
sending the document to any part of the globe within seconds, making telegrams, and even ordinary
letters mostly obsolete. The internet has thus increased the speed of communications manifold, and
reduced the costs drastically.
Quality of Communication
The huge amount of knowledge accessible by a click of the mouse has helped improve the quality of
communication. Translating a text from an unfamiliar language to a familiar language, seeking out the
meaning of an unknown word, and getting follow up information on an unfamiliar concept are all
possible thanks to the internet.
Technology allows easy storage and retrieval of communication when needed, especially verbal
communication, the storage of which was very difficult before. It now becomes easier to rewind and
clear misconceptions rather than make assumptions, or contacting the person again to clear doubt.
Change in Communication Style
![Page 25: Computer in Education.](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022020320/568bd7271a28ab20349eb2f7/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
Running head: ELECTRONIC PORTFOLIO 25
The invention of new gadgets such as mobile phones makes communication easier by allowing people to
communicate from anywhere. An underestimated impact of mobile gadgets is their impact on the
nature of communications. The nature of such impact includes the following:
The possibility of high quality communication from anywhere in the world to anywhere else at low costs
has led to a marked decline in face-to-face communications and to an increased reliance on verbal and
written communication over electronic mediums.
The small keyboards in mobile phone and other hand held devices that make typing difficult has resulted
in a radical shortening of words and increasing use of symbol and shortcuts, with little or no adherence
to traditional grammatical rules. Such change now finds increasing acceptance in the business
community.
Communication has become concise and short, and the adage “brevity is the soul of wit” finds
widespread implementation, though unintentionally.
Accessibility to Communication
The answer to the question how has technology changed communication is incomplete without a
mention of the role of technology in the democratization of communication systems. Technology has
brought down the costs of communication significantly and improved people’s access to
communication.
The proliferation of online forums, live coverage of news, and other such media related initiatives have
resulted in world wide access and participation in news and information for almost everyone.
In the realm of business, access to communication or privileged information was hitherto a major source
of competitive advantage. Technology helps remove such barriers and ensure a level playing field in this
aspect for the most part.
Nature of Communication
The ease of communication and the spread of interactive communication methods such as instant
messengers and video conferencing has increased the volume of communications, but reduced the
average length of communications. People now communicate whatever comes up instantly, and tend to
break up different topics into different communications.
![Page 26: Computer in Education.](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022020320/568bd7271a28ab20349eb2f7/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
Running head: ELECTRONIC PORTFOLIO 26
Finally, technologies such as the internet help spread the net of communication by tracking down old
friends, shedding light on new business opportunities, and the like.

Comparing Various Forms of Communication
Written by: N Nayab • Edited by: Rebecca Scudder
Updated Jun 27, 2011 • Related Guides: Body Language Communication is imparting or interchanging
thoughts, opinions, or information among people by speech, writing, or signs. People communicate in
different ways, with the three typical types being verbal, non verbal and visual.
Verbal
Verbal communication entails the use of words in delivering the intended message. The two major
forms of verbal communication include written and oral communication.
![Page 30: Computer in Education.](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022020320/568bd7271a28ab20349eb2f7/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)

Written communication includes traditional pen and paper letters and documents, typed electronic
documents, e-mails, text chats, SMS and anything else conveyed through written symbols such as
language. This type of communication is indispensable for formal business communications and issuing
legal instructions. Communication forms that predominantly use written communication include
handbooks, brochures, contracts, memos, press releases, formal business proposals, and the like. The
effectiveness of written communication depends on the writing style, grammar, vocabulary, and clarity.
Oral communication
The other form of verbal communication is the spoken word, either face-to-face, or through phone,
voice chat, video conferencing or any other medium. Various forms of informal communications such as
the grapevine or informal rumor mill, and formal communications such as lectures, conferences are
forms of oral communication. Oral communication finds use in discussions and causal and informal
conversations. The effectiveness of oral conversations depends on the clarity of speech, voice
modulation, pitch, volume, speed, and even non-verbal communications such as body language and
visual cues.
Project Mgmt Office (PMO) www.Metier.com Starting a PMO? Download our Free PMO White Papers!
Ads by Google Verbal communication makes the process of communication easier and faster, and
remains the most successful form of communication. Yet this makes up only seven percent of all human
communication!
Nonverbal Communication
Non verbal communication entails communicating by sending and receiving wordless messages. They
usually reinforce verbal communication, though it can also stand alone and convey messages on its own.
Physical non verbal communication, or body language, includes facial expressions, eye contact, body
posture, gestures such as a wave, pointed finger and the like, overall body movements, tone of voice,
touch, and others. Facial expressions are the most common among all nonverbal communication. For
instance, a smile or a frown conveys distinct emotions hard to express through verbal communication.
Research estimates that body language, including facial expressions, account for 55 percent of all
communication.
![Page 31: Computer in Education.](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022020320/568bd7271a28ab20349eb2f7/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
Running head: ELECTRONIC PORTFOLIO 31
Paralanguage
The way something is said, rather than what is actually said, is an important component of non verbal
communication. It includes voice quality, intonation, pitch, stress, emotion, tone, and style of speaking,
and communicates approval, interest or the lack of it. Research estimates that tone of the voice
accounts for 38 percent of all communications.
Other forms of non-verbal communication usually communicate one’s personality. These include:
Aesthetic communication or creative expressions such as dancing, painting, and the like
Appearance or the style of dressing, combing hair and the like which communicates of one’s personality
Space language such as paintings, landscapes and others communicate social status and taste
Symbols such as religious, status, or ego-building symbols
Visual Communication
A third type of communication is visual communication through visual aids such as signs, typography,
drawing, graphic design, illustration, color and other electronic resources.
Visual communication such as graphs and charts usually reinforce written communication, and can in
many case replace written communication altogether. As the adage goes “a picture is worth a thousand
words”; such visual communication is more powerful than verbal and non verbal communication on
many occasions. Technological developments has made expressing visual communications much easier
than before.
A good understanding of different types of communications and communication styles help you know
and deal with people better, clear up misunderstandings and misconceptions, and contribute to the
success of the enterprise.

![Page 33: Computer in Education.](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022020320/568bd7271a28ab20349eb2f7/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)

required re-typing on the typewriter before the final version. Sending the letter across to someone else
required a visit to the post office and a postage stamp. Faster methods such as telegrams had severe
limitations in text, and remained costly.

![Page 34: Computer in Education.](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022020320/568bd7271a28ab20349eb2f7/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)

to traditional grammatical rules.

![Page 39: Computer in Education.](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022020320/568bd7271a28ab20349eb2f7/html5/thumbnails/39.jpg)

![Page 40: Computer in Education.](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022020320/568bd7271a28ab20349eb2f7/html5/thumbnails/40.jpg)
Running head: ELECTRONIC PORTFOLIO 40
A good understanding of different types of communications and communication styles help you know
and deal with people better, clear up misunderstandings and misconceptions, and contribute to the
success of the enterprise.

enlazan.
TARJETA INTERFAZ DE LA RED. Permite a una computadora conectarse a una red.
CABLES.

Grade Level: Pre-School
Overview: Counting, sorting, patterning, matching, size order, uses of money.
Teacher Comments: These activities integrate math, social studies, art, language arts, and

Activities for Small Group or Centers:
List: Have a class discussion about the purposes of money (food, toys, clothing, charity, etc.).
Make a list on chart paper.
Money Toss: Toss five pennies onto a math mat (use piggy bank clipart to make a math mat).
Count the heads and tails.
Candy Store: Use craft pom-poms for the candy. Each child has a small jar filled with "candy."
Make money cards by hot-gluing real pennies to posterboard pieces or adding coin stickers to
index cards. Children draw a card and "purchase" the same amount of gumballs by taking them
from the jar. Play until the jar is empty.
Buried Treasure: Bury coins in the sand table. Children dig to find them, then sort them into a
sorting tray.
Treasure Chests: Buy mini-wooden treasure chests from a craft store. Hot-glue coins (penny,
nickel, dime, quarter) on a chest (one coin on each chest). Children sort the coins by placing
them in the correct treasure chest. Or, write a number on the chest and have the children count
the same amount of coins into the chests.
Magnets and Magnifiers: Let children explore with coins and magnets, and coins and magnifying
glasses.
Coin Rubbing: Hot-glue several coins onto posterboard sheets. Children lay thin paper on top
and clip it with clothespins to hold the paper it place. Use the flat side of a crayon to rub over the
paper and make an impression of the coins.
Flip Graph: Flip a coin and graph the number of heads and tails.
Quarter Stacking: Roll a die and stack that amount of quarters. Continue until the stack falls.
![Page 71: Computer in Education.](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022020320/568bd7271a28ab20349eb2f7/html5/thumbnails/71.jpg)

Patterns: Make patterns with coins. For example: heads, tails, heads, tails; or, penny, nickel,
penny, nickel.
Size Ordering: Put the coins in order by size from smallest to largest (dime, penny, nickel,
quarter).
Dominoes: Make dominoes by cutting rectangular pieces of posterboard and hot-gluing different
coin combinations. Draw a dividing line in the middle. Children play dominoes in the usual way,
matching the coins
Store: Label the play food from the housekeeping center with price tags and give the children
purses or wallets with coin money. The price tags should either be labeled with a numeral with
children using only pennies, or labeled with various coin stickers with children matching the real
coins to the coins on the sticker tags.
Snack Bar: If you serve snacks in your classroom, buy several types of individually wrapped
snacks. Put them in separate boxes, labeled with a price (or on a shelf, labeled with a price). Give
the children wallets or ziplock bags with pennies, and allow them to "buy" their snack.
Ice Cream Shop: Set up an ice cream shop using large craft pom-poms for the scoops of ice
cream, and use bowls, spoons, and ice cream scoops. Make a price list on a chart, showing how
much the ice cream costs. Children use pennies to "buy" ice cream at the shop. Some children
will be customers and some will be employees.
Buy a Letter: Children make a name bracelet with letter beads. Give each child the same amount
of pennies. Each letter bead costs one cent. Children buy the letters to spell their name. Have
them count the letters in their name, then count out the amount of pennies they will need. You
can also use letter stickers to stick on paper instead of making a bracelet.
Coin Cleaning: Have the children bring in "dirty" pennies from home. Set out various ingredients
on the table: vinegar, salt, and ketchup, along with some ingredients that will not clean pennies
well (such as water, flour, etc.) Let the children experiment with the materials to find what cleans
pennies the best. Encourage them to mix some ingredients. (Vinegar and salt together will clean
pennies, and ketchup by itself will clean them.)

The software is what brings the computer to life.
Mathematics software like Leap frog Math Circus , Leap frog Talking, Leap Frog Phonics,
Letter Word Factory help kids to learn the basic t of letters sounds ,numbers concepts thought
different activities that are very catchy for the kids with music repetitions and movements ,In
addition, we know that technologies software offer teachers and students opportunities that will
help improving student Achievement.
Technologies offer many other opportunities to teachers and students. Teachers can benefit
with the use in their everyday work to collect learning data that can lead to direct improvement

Introduction
What are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Educational Software?
When children use educational software, they spend a lot of time in front of their computer.
For example, when children are learning a new concept on their computer, they are in total
control of the experience. They can move at their own pace. They can review and practice as
much as they want. They can select the level or degree of difficulty that seems best for their
learning needs.
Today’s software creates a whole new educational experience. Children not only see what
they are learning, but they also use multiple senses to master the concept. No one knows why
computer fascinate young children, but they do. This frequently results in children spending
more time and practice on their learning task. This increased focus and attention helps them gain
a deeper mastery of their learning.
Because good software tends to enhance the educational experience of most children, they
frequently spend too much time in front of their computers. This can cause some physical health
risks. Eyestrain is a common problem. Because children may lean forward while using their
computer, potential posture and skeletal problems can occur. To alleviate the potential health
problems, you should make sure that the setup of the computer is designed for the child; The
time children spend on educational activities in front of the computer should be monitored.
Body
Another problem with educational software is the appropriateness of the software. If a child
works on a concept that is either too hard or too easy, frustration or boredom may quickly occur.
The educational activities of a child on the computer should be monitored to insure maximum
the benefits and minimize negative influences and over-stimulation.
The child becomes skilled with their educational activities on the computer; they become
quite confident with their computer skills. If the child has access to the Internet, their parents
should closely monitor their time and activities.
Benefits
Educational software is a great way to learn while having fun. It also allows you to move at
your own pace, returning to modules or areas you did not understand fully without the pressure
of face-to-face contact with a teacher or other faster-moving pupils. This is why it is fast
becoming the favored method of teaching for some high-tech universities.
If you are a parent you may be looking into the possibility of purchasing some educational
software or learning games for your kids. There are a few positives to using such software it
allows your children to become accustomed to using a computer without them having access to
![Page 80: Computer in Education.](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022020320/568bd7271a28ab20349eb2f7/html5/thumbnails/80.jpg)

nasty computer games or adult internet content. They enjoy playing the games which are tailor
made for the short attention spans of children, and you get a few hours of peace and quiet! Using
educational software in partnership with school classes is another way to ensure that your child
has a thorough understanding of the lessons they are being taught. If it seems that they are
struggling with mathematics or English, there are programs which deal just in these areas.
If you are an adult you may be wondering if educational software can work for you. If you
are learning a new language or are undertaking an intensive course at university or college,
having some software to go over the lessons you learn in class may be the ideal way to solidify
any vague grasp you have of the topic. If you are about to undertake a training program for work
which uses software, you should find it an easy and stress free way to learn and practice new
concepts.
Commended for children who use the Internet for educational or other activities. E-learning
software can ease the load of studies and make education much more proactive and interactive.
In colleges and universities, students are not free to approach their professors with their
difficulties. But with e-learning, that is not a problem at all. Courses provided by the e-learning
software tools are very exhaustive, and they have links where students can visit to clarify their
doubts. It makes learning much simpler.
Conclusion
The new technology at the same time will help teachers to be more creative and use their
imagination to create a classroom full of new experiences and excitement, to make create an
environment where students will learn and enjoy being there. As a future teacher I believe that
part of our job is to be creative and open the student imagination that they will believe that the
sky is the limit. Remember teachers and student spend more time in school that in their home,
that is why we need get to school every day with a lot of energy and a positive mind.
Technology is the synonym of future and opportunities, advance, creative, brainstorming
and most important accomplishment. Without technology we are lost in this world. (htt)

The goal in assessing technical features is to determine how well the program uses the

satisfaction with technical features is secondary to content considerations. However, with tool
programs like word processors, technical features usually take precedence. Selecting software for

should consider both program and product decisions. (Educational software) (Educational

recursos (CD-ROM, impresoras, etc.) y servicios (acceso a Internet, e-mail, Chat, juegos), etc.
Redes de amplia cobertura MAN

DQDB (Distributed Queue Dual Bus) o IEEE 802.6.

Write a paper with the following questions and then do a final Animoto production based on the
most important findings.
tecnología debe servir a esas metas.
