Hispanic American Elders
Is one of the fastest growing groups in the nation.
By 2020 it will reach 14% Are living longer, growing older and
becoming more diverse. 48% are of Mexican descent 15% are of Cuban descent 12% are of Puerto Rican descent 25% are of other Hispanic heritage
Caregiving among Hispanics It is estimated that 27% of Hispanic
Americans households provide informal caregiving to a friend or relative.
Typical Hispanic caregiver is a 40 year old female.
More than half of caregivers also have a child age 18 and younger living at home.
Strengths of the Hispanic Caregiver
Strong family values with emphasis on caring for relatives and friends
Strong filial responsibility for caring for their parents, relatives.
Large network of social support that lessens caregiving burden
Religion as a source of coping strategies.
