B. Damage(1) Airworthy Damage
(a) Airworthydamageisaspecificconditiontoapropellercomponentidentifiedin the Repair Limits chapter 1 of this manual that does not affect the safety orflightcharacteristicsofthespinnerassemblyandconformstoitstypedesign by meeting the condition inspection criteria limitations found in this manual.
1 ThemaximumlimitsofairworthydamagearespecifiedintheRepairLimits chapter 1 of this manual.
a TheRepairLimitschapter1inthismanualspecifiesinspectioncriteria and instructions for evaluating damage to determine continued airworthiness.
b Although a spinner may continue in service with airworthy damage, this type of damage should be repaired at the earliest practical time to prevent further damage to the system.
(2) Unairworthy Damage
(a) Unairworthy damage is damage that exceeds the airworthy damage limits asspecifiedintheRepairLimitschapter1ofthismanual.1 Unairworthydamagecanaffectthesafetyorflightcharacteristicsof
the spinner assembly and does not conform to its type design.
2 This condition deems the component unairworthy, requiring appropriate corrective action to repair or remove it from service, as applicable. Exceptions to this policy may be possible, but require written authorization from Hartzell Propeller Inc.
C. Repair(1) Minor Repair

D. Component Life
(1) Component life is expressed in terms of hours of service (Time Since New, TSN) and in terms of hours of service since overhaul (Time Since Overhaul, TSO).
NOTE: TSN/TSO is considered as the time accumulated between rotation andlanding,i.e.,flighttime.
(2) BothTSNandTSOarenecessaryfordefiningthelifeofthecomponent.Somepartsare"lifelimited,"whichmeansthattheymustbereplacedafteraspecifiedperiod of use (TSN).
(3) When a component or assembly undergoes an overhaul, the TSO is returned to zero hours.
(a) Time Since New (TSN) can never be returned to zero.
(b) Repair without overhaul does not affect TSO or TSN.
(4) Time Since New (TSN) and Time Since Overhaul (TSO) records must be maintained in the propeller logbook.
6. Determination of Repair
A. This manual is arranged such that damage and repair are treated separately. This givestheoperatorsandrepairfacilitiesgreaterclarificationandfreedomindealingwith composite spinner damage.
(1) Thischapterdefinesairworthydamageandminorrepair.TheRepairLimitschapter lists the allowables for airworthy damage.
(2) DamagethatisgreaterthantheallowablesspecifiedintheRepairLimitschapter is considered unairworthy.
(3) The type of repair is not dictated by the type of damage received. For example, a spinner with airworthy damage may require a major repair.
B. Uponinspectionofacompositespinner, anoperatorshouldfirstdeterminethetypeof damage: airworthy or unairworthy. (Limits are in the Repair Limits chapter.) Figure 1 illustrates the determination of repair.
(1) If the damage is determined to be airworthy, the aircraft may continue in service; however, the operator should make arrangements to have repairs performed as soon as practical.
(2) If the damage is determined to be unairworthy, the spinner cannot be used until a repair is performed. Exceptions to this policy may be possible, but require written authorization from Hartzell Propeller Inc.
C. The operator should determine if the repair falls into the category of minor or major.
D. Becauseoftheinfinitetypesofdamagepossible, notalltypesofdamagethatcanbe considered airworthy are included in this manual. If there is any doubt as to airworthiness of the spinner, contact Hartzell Propeller Inc.

(6) Installation Procedure
CAUTION 1: DO NOT TRIM THE EROSION MASK ON THE SPINNER DOME BECAUSE DAMAGE TO THE SPINNER DOME WILL OCCUR.
CAUTION 2: DO NOT INSTALL THE EROSION MASK ON THE DOME EROSION SHIELD UNTIL THE PAINT HAS CURED FOR A MINIMUM OF EIGHT (8) HOURS OR THE EROSION MASK WILL NOT ADHERE PROPERLY.
(a) Refer to Table 3-1 Finish Procedures in this chapter, for approval for installation of the erosion mask.
