Have you ever heard of

composite material?

COMPOSITE MATERIAL

A composite is when two or more different

materials are combined together to create a

superior and unique material with amazing

properties such as

Flexibility

Lightness

Robustness

Page 4: Composite material intro (2)

Just is in nature, man is able to re-create

comparable structure.

The first uses of composites date back to the

1500s B.C. when early Egyptians and

Mesopotamian settlers used a mixture of

mud and straw to make bricks.

This is an insulative and economical composite

building material

Now a days a composite material is a

combination of at least two different material

Reinforcement

Matrix

One which is generally fibrous but axis of

reinforcement which is contained within the

matrix. This matrix maintains the fibers in a

geometric composition.

Thus creating an extra ordinary efficient

material which is:

Light

Robust

Flexible

Competitive

Many different manufacturing processes

have been developed such as:

1. Vacuum molding

2. Infusion molding

3. Low pressure resin injection

4. Compression molding

of reinforcement pre impregnated with resin.

2. INFUSION MOLDING

with resin for wind turbine blades

4. COMPRESSION MOLDING

of car body parts

By combining numerous manufacturing

techniques, the aeronautics industry also

relies on these highly efficient composites.

Shaping our surrounding, these extra ordinary

materials also services source of inspiration

for designers.

The ‘big bench’ that is light and robust and 6m

long maintained on two fulcrums only. The

big bench is designed with the help of

polyester board reinforced with the fiber

glass. this model is processed by

Pultrusion.

Page 15: Composite material intro (2)

Using various methods of reinforcement,

fiber glass is impregnated with polyester

resin and continuously pulled through a

heated die which hardened the resin and

simultaneous shaping of it. The fashioned

part is then cut into a required length. The

flexibility of board gives the designers the

ability to bend it into a curved shaped and

at the same time increases the load

capacity considerably. These properties

never before achieved with conventional

homogenous material.

The big bench won the first prize in two

contests organized by JEC.

Everyday manufacturers and designers

encounter challenges with unexpected and

spectacular results like these

In view of sustainable development, new

passing research and technical evolution may

to be explode continuously. Therefore, the

use of natural fibers like Hemp & Ramie,

what should make recycling

of material easier is a

Challenge to be taken up

today in order to meet

tomorrow’s objectives.
