The Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA) is dedicated to exhibiting outstanding examples of modern and contemporary art, architecture and design in order to encourage conversations around the ideas of our time. We are eager to share with you — students and teachers — this season’s program of learning experiences, from arts activities to guided tours and illustrated presentations brought free of charge to your classroom. We invite you to participate and discover how we can collaborate to bring students a range of inspiring activities. We design the programs featured in this brochure to provide your students with enriching activities that address the Arizona Visual Arts Standards and meet your grade-level expectations. Visits to SMoCA energize students and advance your work in the classroom. We are excited to share these compelling programs with you.

I look forward to seeing you in the Museum soon.

Afghan War Rugs: The Modern Art of Central Asia offers a glimpse into the culture of modern-day Afghanistan. This compelling collection of rugs updates traditional floral and geometric patterning with contemporary images of tanks, soldiers, helicopters, world maps and political portraits. These intriguing objects question assumptions about this ancient craft and region.

Organized and curated by Enrico Mascelloni and Annemarie Sawkins, Ph.D.Sponsored locally by Joan Cremin, Paul Giancola and Carrie Lynn Richardson, and Tamar Weiss in memory of Emil Weiss

What will you do to make a more peaceful world?

More than 90 students at Zuni Hills Elementary School in Peoria considered this question and wove their responses into a collaborative rug that tells both individual and collective stories about peace. Students worked with Ann Morton, a local artist who uses fiber as a tool for social communication. This exhibition accompanies the SMoCA exhibition Afghan War Rugs: The Modern Art of Central Asia .

The Young@Art Gallery is located outside the Museum, next door, in the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts.

Organized by the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. The Young@Art Gallery is sponsored by The Robert and Mercedes Eichholz Foundation and Macy’s.
