General Presentation - Fall 09´

Energy, Complexity Science, and ICT• Energy system: large-scale socio-technical system composed by a myriad of

heterogeneous elements, working at different scales

• The complex behaviour that emerges from these interactions drives classical modelling methods to their limits

• ICT-enabled Complex Systems methodologies and techniques emerge as a promising tool to tackle some of the major challenges associated to the design, control, optimisation and governance of the future energy system:

New performance metrics and governance frameworks

Design of energy markets and regulations

Design of robust and survivable networks

Massive integration of renewable energy sources

Optimization of energy generation and consumption strategies …

• … but the interaction between the Energy, ICT and Complex Systems research communities is still insufficient to translate the academic research into new paradigms for the design and governance of the energy system

General Presentation - Fall 09´

ComplexEnergy• Support Action in response to the FP7 ICT call 4, topic ICT-2009.8.10 “Identifying

new research topics and assessing emerging global S&T trends in ICT for future FET Proactive initiatives”

• Objectives: Bridge the gap between Complex Systems, ICT and Energy research communities

Identify the potential of ICT-enabled energy modelling, control, and management solutions built on the results of Complex Systems Science

Propose future FET initiatives at the junction of ICT, Energy and Complex Systems

Magnification of the level of awareness, at European scale, of the potential impact of advanced ICT techniques implementing concepts and tools from Complex Systems research for the design and governance of the energy system

• Partners: The Innaxis Foundation & Research Institute (Coordinator)

CREATE-NET

• Duration: 15 months (November 2009 - January 2011)

General Presentation - Fall 09´

ComplexEnergy• Main deliverables:

White Paper on Strategic Areas, Research Challenges and Emerging Trends

Roadmap for Future FET Initiatives

• Expert Panel: 8-person group - direct link to research communities (Complex Systems, Energy, ICT)

Guidance and feedback regarding project results and challenges

• Workshops: First WS (Venice, Spring 2010): discussion of the White Paper with the Expert Panel

Second WS (Madrid, Autumn 2010): public discussion of the Roadmap

• Final Conference (Brussels, January 2011): Present results to the key stakeholders: research community, industry, policy-makers…)
