How does the author’s use of detail depict the relationship between the narrator and Aunt Margaret? Use textual evidence to support your answer. It did not occur to me that I was suspected of stealing this toy, even when Aunt Margaret, five minutes later, burst into my room and ordered me to come and look for Sheridan’s butterfly. I protested that I had already done so, but she paid my objections no heed and seized me roughly by the arm. “Then do it again, Miss, and mind that you find it.” Her voice was rather hoarse and her whole furrowed iron-gray aspect somewhat tense and disarrayed, yet I had the impression that she was not angry with me but with something in outer reality-what one would now call fate or contingency. When I had searched again, lackadaisically, and again found nothing, she joined in with vigor, turning everything upside down. We even went into the den, where Myers was sitting, and searched all around him, while he watched us with an ironical expression, filling his pipe from a Bull Durham sack. We found nothing, and Aunt Margaret led me upstairs to my room, which I ransacked while she stood and watched me. All at once, when we had finished with my bureau drawers and my closet, she appeared to give up. She sighed and bit her lips. The door cautiously opened and Aunt Mary came in. The two sisters looked at each other and at me. Margaret shrugged her shoulders. “She hasn’t got it, I do believe,” she said.

Writing a thesis statement The thesis statement is your statement of purpose. Thesis statements do not use "I" or "my;" even though the idea present in

your thesis statement is your own, use third person for a stronger, more

confident approach.

1. It is potentially dangerous. 2. It is more expensive than other alternatives. 3. It causes water, land and air pollution.

Going into his cold dark "study" he placed the lantern on the table and, stooping to its light, read the message again and again. It was the first time that Mattie had ever written to him, and the possession of the paper gave him a strange new sense of her nearness; yet it deepened his anguish by reminding him that henceforth they would have no other way of communicating with each other. For the life of her smile, the warmth of her voice, only cold paper and dead words! Confused motions of rebellion stormed in him. He was too young, too strong, too full of the sap of living, to submit so easily to the destruction of his hopes. Must he wear out all his years at the side of a bitter querulous woman? Other possibilities had been in him, possibilities sacrificed, one by one, to Zeena's narrow-mindedness and ignorance. And what good had come of it? She was a hundred times bitterer and more discontented than when he had married her: the one pleasure left her was to inflict pain on him. All the healthy instincts of self-defense rose up in him against such waste...

No one other than Mr. Martin seemed to be in the house, but a sweet odor as of gardenias told them that someone else had been. Blotting her lashes with a white handkerchief, Helene walked through the kitchen to the back bedroom where she had slept for sixteen years. Nel trotted along behind, enchanted with the smell, the candles and the strangeness. When Helene bent to loosen the ribbons of Nel’s hat, a woman in a yellow dress came out of the garden and onto the back porch that opened into the bedroom. The two women looked at each other. There was no recognition in the eyes of the either. Then Helene said, “

The road was about ten feet above and they could see only the tops of the trees on the other side of it. Behind the ditch they were sitting in there were more woods, tall and dark and deep. In a few minutes they saw a car some distance away on top of a hill, coming slowly as if the occupants were watching them. The grandmother stood up and waved both arms dramatically to attract their attention. The car continued to come on slowly, disappeared around a bend and appeared again, moving even slower, on top of the hill they had gone over. It was a big black battered hearselike automobile. There were three men in it.

I think guptas modified airplane idea is good because it gives people a chance to experience what being in a plane short of feels like. They try to share the same point of view, and how the storys are told. In a readers opinion its good that Gupta modified his own airplane.

Page 34: Complete the following sentences in notebook

Textual evidence • Short answers must include textual evidence that supports the claim being made. • The evidence must support your claim, your answer, your conclusion.

– If prompt reads: Explain why strapping your pet while riding in a car is important. – Your answer should read:

– Pets must be strapped in by a seatbelt when riding in a car because it will help keep it safe. According to Statton, 90% of animals involved in car accidents are seriously injured; and worse, 25% of those animals die because of their injuries. In tests conducted by Statton, he proved these high numbers would drastically decrease if animals were strapped in by a seatbelt. Not only will this simple act protect the animal, but pet owners will be saved from seeing their loved ones suffer or losing them altogether.

Gupta’s modified airplane is a good idea because you can

learn so much towards how to act when in a airplane. Gupta demonstrates what to do in case of an emergency. For example, flight attendant Ridhi Sehgal explains how the oxygen masks work. The oxygen masks will drop oxygen to the person using the mask. Also it is a very good idea because Gupta also trains engineering students and flight attendants and explains to public how an airplane works. He wants to inspire kids so that one day they might be also pilots.

Written Composition: Expository

Take risks. Ask big questions. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes; if you don’t make mistakes, you’re not reaching far enough.

David Packard, co-founder of Hewlett-Packard

Taking a risk means acting without knowing whether the outcome will be good. Think carefully about this statement.

Write an essay explaining why it is sometimes necessary to take a chance. Be sure to— • clearly state your thesis • organize and develop your ideas effectively • choose your words carefully • edit your writing for grammar, mechanics, and spelling
