BIOMASS: CLEAN ENERGY OF THE FUTURE

A GLOBAL COMMITMENT TO RENEWABLEENERGY. AN AGRICULTURAL OPPORTUNITYGovernments and International Organisations across the globe have established ambitious roadmaps to increasethe role renewable energies play in meeting our overall energy demand, in order to combat both the pollutioncaused by burning fossil fuels as well as to find alternatives to these dwindling and finite resources. The EuropeanUnion’s Renewable Energy Directive (RED), for example, has tasked all European Union member states with satisfying20% of their energy needs with renewables by the year 2020. This ambitious target requires a multi-facetedapproach, and New Holland, through its pioneering Clean Energy Leader strategy, already has a complete range of solutions for biomass production.

WHAT ACTUALLY IS BIOMASS? Biomass is biological material derived from living, or recently living organisms. In the context of biomass for energy this is often used to mean plant based material, but biomass can equally apply to both animal and vegetable derived material.

BIOMASS: CARBON NEUTRAL ENERGYIt’s all very well and good producing renewable energy, but if by doing so you have a carbon footprint of an elephant you’ve simply shifted the problem from use toproduction. Agricultural biomass is a carbon neutral virtuous cycle. The carbon emittedduring the utilisation of these crops, for example in combustion, is absorbed by thecrops the following season during growth. The result? Energy one. Carbon neutral.

BIOMASS: THE ULTIMATE RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCEThe never-ending cycle of sowing, growing and harvesting is as age old as farming itself, and means thatagricultural biomass is the true embodiment of the term ‘renewable energy’. Quite simply, it will exist as longas farmers continue to cultivate the land. No need to worry about dwindling resources or finite supplies.Biomass energy will be on tap today, tomorrow and for all of your children’s tomorrows.

BIOMASS: FITS FARMERS LIKE A GLOVEWhat makes biomass and agriculture the perfect match? One: farmers have the land to grow suitable crops. Two: farmers have the machines to harvest and process those crops. Three: farmers can provide for their own energy needs, and sell any surplus energy back to the national grid.Growing energy. As easy as 1-2-3.

BIOMASS: AT THE HEART OF THE CLEAN ENERGY LEADER STRATEGYSince 2006 New Holland is established as the Clean Energy Leader for itsactive promotion and development of renewable fuels, emissions reductionsystems and sustainable agricultural technology. Biomass, together with thefour other pillars: Biodiesel, ECOBlue™ Tier 4 solutions, NH2™ hydrogen tractorand the Energy Independent Farm and carbon footprint reduction, form thefoundation blocks for this strategy.

BIOMASS: UNLOCKING ENERGY POTENTIAL

When someone mentions biomass, a coupled of domed ‘digestors’ probably spring to mind. But ifthey were to ask you just what powered them a slightly puzzled look would probably come over mostpeople’s faces. But it needn’t! A whole host of raw materials can be used to generate this highlyrenewable form of energy, including carbon neutral energy crops and agricultural residues, togetherwith non-agricultural residues and matter.

AGRICULTURAL RESIDUESAgricultural by-products can be given a second lease of life by being used in the energy production cycle.

Arable crop residues. Surplus straw, together with maize stover and husks can be transformed into real-life energy.

Animal manures and slurries. Instead of leaving it in a pile to rot, or scratching yourhead with what to do with it, use old animal manure, bedding and excess slurry to fuelthe biomass energy revolution.

TYPES OF BIOMASS

NON-AGRICULTURAL SOURCES

Food waste. Food waste from food and drink manufacturing, preparation and processing, together with consumer waste can be put to good use.

Forestry by-products. By its very nature, the forestry industry produces anenormous quantity of unwanted by products. Sawdust, bark and off-cuts aresuitable for generating energy.

Industrial waste. Industry can help power itself by recycling waste paper, textiles, wood and even sewage sludge, amongst others, in biomass installations.

ENERGY CROPS: GROW YOUR OWN FUELThe term ‘energy crop’ can be applied to any plant which is grown with the specificaim of producing energy from it.

Short rotation energy crops. Rotation coppice and forestry are two of the mostwidespread forms of ‘raw’ energy. Harvested every two-three years, they are thenchipped for use in wood-fired power stations.

Grasses and non-woody energy crops. Europe’s lush green fields produce morethan just silage for cattle. Miscanthus, hemp and other grasses, such as switchgrass, can be transformed into a source of energy.

Agricultural energy crops. Sugar beet and sugar cane can be made intobioethanol.

Energy from starchy crops. Wheat, maize and even potatoes can be convertedinto bioethanol or combustion fuel for multi-fuel stoves.

Oil crops. Turn oil into biofuel by growing and processing oilseed rape or sunflowers.

STOVES OR BOILERS

Combustible fuel. The simplest, and perhaps themost obvious use of biomass, is the burning of rawmaterials to release heat energy. Woodchips, maize, straw bales and maize stover can be burned as partof a carbon neutral cycle for domestic or districtheating, or on an industrial scale by power stationsto feed energy directly into the national grid.

ANAEROBIC DIGESTION.

Biogas. The famous domed ‘digestors’ gobble up virtually all forms of biomass material from agriculturalenergy crops, to starch crops and even arable crop residues, amongst others, ‘digest’ them and convert theminto biogas which can be used for domestic heating, or burned to produce electricity which is then fed backinto the national grid for use in homes across the continent.

Digestate. The nutrient rich digestate is a natural by-product of anaerobic digestion and can be used as a manure or fertiliser to enrich next seasons’ growing biomass crops.

NH2. This is also the first stage in the Energy Independent Farm cycle, which can use biogass to generate hydrogen for the NH2, the world’s only hydrogen power, zero-emissions tractor.

RAW MATERIALS GO IN. HOW DOES ENERGY COME OUT?Growing energy crops, or collecting other raw materials is just the first step along the energyproduction road. The next stage is releasing the energy contained within that inert material, andharnessing it to produce power. This can be done on both an industrial scale in large power plants,or it can even take place on your own farm. How would you like to become energy independent, powering your own home, your own farm, even those of your neighbours’ or even your entireneighbourhood?

FERMENTATION

Bioethanol. Brazil has pioneered the use of bioethanol as a replacement for fossilfuelled cars. The process itself if quite straight forward. The sugar from sugar cane, sugar beet, cereal crops, and even from surplus wine, maize stover and miscanthus,is converted into cellular energy and used to produce ethanol. This is then used inplace of, or as an addition to, standard fuels to power vehicles.

TRANSESTERIFICATION

Biodiesel. New Holland pioneered the use of biodiesel in 2006, and currently has the largest range of B100,100% biodiesel compliant products. Moreover, all Tier 4A products which use ECOBlue™ SCR technology canuse 20%, B20, biodiesel as long as the biodiesel blend fully complies with EN14214:2009 regulations. So, howdo you feel about making your own fuel? It’s simple enough! Oilseed rape can be transformed into the dieselyou put into your tank. Cold pressed oil is higher quality, while hot pressed produces the greatest quantity. The choice is yours. Moreover, all modern diesel blends contain between 5-10% biodiesel anyway.

BIOMASS HEADERSNew Holland offers a complete range of headers for biomass applications, including maize and wholecrop models. The 130FB coppice header withintegrated saw blades, can slice through coppice stems of up to 15cm and produce uniform woodchips. Perfect for the most varied biomassoperations.

BIOMASS DRUMA shorter chop length means a greater efficiencyin digestion and also a higher storage volume of biomass can be achieved in the silage pit. New Holland has developed a dedicated biomassdrum with 2x16 knives for an industry-leadingshort chop length. The shorter chop length in crop provides a greater surface area for the bacteria to feed on thus creating a higherefficiency of biogas production. It also improvesthe flow of the digester biomass.

MOISTURE AND YIELD SENSINGHarvesting the crop just when it is ready is the key to maximum energyproduction. New Holland’s integrated moisture sensors mean that you knowwhen to start, and more importantly, when to stop harvesting to get themaximum energy from every crop. The integrated yield sensor enables youto estimate just how much energy you’ll be able to produce per hectare.Used in conjunction with GPS mapping, yield maps can be created to givedetailed reports on your farm.

CROP PROCESSING ROLLS AND VARIFLOW™ SYSTEMThe powerful Crop Processing Rolls guarantee uniform cracking and cropprocessing, key to an efficient fermentation process. Furthermore, those fittedto the FR9080 and FR9090 can be specified with a heavy duty hard chromecoating for increased durability, perfect for extensive biomass operations. The Variflow™ system offers excellent biomass harvesting flexibility: convertfrom grass position to maize position in under 2 minutes without the need for tools.

NEW HOLLAND’S WORLD-WIDECOMMITMENT TO WORKING WITHINDUSTRY-LEADING BIOMASS OPERATIONS

ITALY: THE FUTURE OF ENERGY INDEPENDENT FARMING IS HERESomething very special is taking place at the La Bellotta farm on the outskirts of Turin, in Northern Italy. The very first second generation NH2™ hydrogen powered tractor is taking to the field. However, biomass is playing a fundamental role in keeping them going: it produces the methane which is then converted intohydrogen to power the machine. Furthermore, the biogas plant is powering more than just tractors: the 1 MWbiogas plant that recently became operational covers the total energy needs of the farm, and will be able tofeed enough electricity into the national grid to meet the daily power requirements of around 10,000 people.

UNITED KINGDOM: THE LARGEST WOOD-FIRED BIOMASS STATION IN THE WORLDThe world’s largest wood-fired biomass power station, E.ON’sSteven’s Croft plant near Lockerbie, is guaranteed a constant supplyof uniform chopped willow coppice courtesy of a New HollandFR9080. Why? The FB130 willow header has been designed todouble the harvesting acreage so far achieved by competitorproducts, and it easily copes with the 5-10cm stalks and with yields of up to 10.2 tonnes of dry matter per hectare. Robert Smith, Managing Director of Lantmännen Renewable Fuels, said, "The crop is harvested using the New Holland machinery and then taken straight into E.ON’s power station - it’s a perfectshowcase for a complete supply chain for energy crops, from field to power in one step.”

BRAZIL: THE SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESSFUL ENERGY GENERATION An energy revolution is taking place in Brazil. New Holland, in partnership with the Centro de TecnologiaCanavieira (Sugar Cane Technology Centre - CTC), is at the forefront of producing energy from sugarcane, not just in the traditional form of ethanol, but by transforming sugar cane straw into energy. Two Brazilian test farms use a whole range of New Holland equipment to bale this energy rich strawincluding tractors, windrowers, large square balers and bale accumulators. The project with CTCincludes a solution to process these bales in sugar cane power plants to cogenerate energy. This technology is of growing interest to Brazilian farmers, as the ban on traditional sugar cane stubbleburning will come into effect in 2021, and this solution provides the perfect, profitability enhancingalternative for the farmers of the over 12 million hectares of land given over to sugar cane production.

INDIA: FROM BURNING FIELDS TO CLEAN ENERGYIn Guragon, near Delhi, India, A2Z Maintenance & Engineering Services saw an opportunityto produce energy from what were previously considered to be waste products, namelystraw from paddy fields, and that from cotton, maize and oilseed rape, and reduce thenegative environmental impact of large-scale ‘stubble burning’ in the process. The company are currently operating a fleet of 105 tractors, 45 conventional balers, 15 rakes and two mowers, all New Holland, in order to supply three power generation projects in the Punjab region. With over 45 megawatts of energy delivered to the nationalgrid, New Holland are now cultivating India’s fields and lighting up the country’s cities. Mr Rakesh Agarwal, Chief Managing Director of A2Z, was extremely satisfied, "We selectedNew Holland over other manufacturers because of their expertise in biomass collection."

MAKING BIOMASS A REALITY ON YOUR FARM

GENERATE ENERGY AND INCOME WITH BIOMASSThere are large under-utilised resources of farm by-products (straw, tree thinnings, prunings and other wood residues)available as potential biomass fuels. Purpose-grown energy crops and industrial wood waste and by-products can also be used.Currently there are only a small number of on-farm biogas plants in England compared to other EU countries. With over 100 million tons of organic material suitable for anaerobic digestion produced in the UK, 30% of the food we eatending up in the bin and a string of economic incentives on the horizon, now is a great time to think about an investment. Electricity prices from biogas are at 14p/kWh (current as of November 2011). These prices certainly provide incentives andreassurance for anyone concerned about the commercially viable potential of on-farm biogas projects. Income is derived fromelectricity production as well as from gate-fees from diverted waste streams that would have potentially ended up in landfills.

* Enough to fully power 244 houses for a year (at an average use of 18,000kWh per house, per year)
