SUPER SONJA IN HARZBURG HURDLE TREBLE

Is there a better female jumps jockey at the moment than German rider SONJA DAROSZEWSKI? There were three hurdle races held during this year’s Bad Harzburg festival, and she has won the lot!

Having landed last Friday’s hurdle race on the Christian von der Recke-trained Storm of Swords, the jockey and trainer repeated their success when INTERIOR MINISTER won the first race on last Saturday’s card, the Preis vom Wolfenbütteler Schaufenster hurdle race,. Daroszewski took the ride again on INTERIOR MINISTER in the only Pattern hurdle race in Germany this year, the Listed Grosse Bad Harzburger Hürden-Trophy.

However, as the field turned for home in the 14,000 Euro contest, it looked as if trainer von der Recke was set for victory not with Interior Minister, but with the 15:10 favourite Novalis, who led under jockey Paul Johnson approaching the final hurdle. However, as Novalis weakened on the run-in to eventually finish fourth, Daroszewski brought Interior Minister with a perfectly timed run to win the 3400 metre contest by three lengths from Swedish challenger Calvados, runner-up in the race for the second successive year.

JUPITER THE STAR IN SECOND SEEJAGDRENNEN

The Eva Herresthal-trained JUPITER improved from his runner-up position in last weekend’s Seejagdrennen lake steeplechase to land the second of two such races at the Bad Harzburg festival, the Preis der Harzer Volksbank EG Bauwirtschaft on Sunday.

Ridden by Swiss jockey Miguel Lopez, the seven year old Jupiter, who does most of his racing in chases at provincial courses in France, overhauled long time leader Storm of Swords in the closing stages for a 2 ¾ length victory, with Seejagdrennen regular Falconettei back in third.

The Seejagdrennen races, where horses must navigate their way through a lake as part of the course, often provide incident, and Sunday’s race was no exception after Belgian raider Cro Easy parted company with jockey Julian Marinov in the lake section of the 3550 metre contest.

Anglo German Racing’s very own Stefanie Ihlenburg was busy as ever with her camera, taking some of the best photos you will see at this year’s Bad Harzburg festival, and on the next two pages, you can see a montage of her photos (All photos copyright Stefanie Ihlenburg / Anglo German Racing).

Stefanie has taken hundreds of photos from the meeting that can be purchased. To enquire about buying any photos, please e-mail Stefanie directly at [email protected]

IQUITOS LANDS GROUP 1 MUNICH PRIZE

The Hans Jürgen Gröschel-trained IQUITOS, Germany’s horse of the year in 2016, won the latest round of the German Racing Champions League, the Group 1 Grosser Dallmayr Preis at Munich on Sunday.

Ridden for the first time by Daniele Porcu, Iquitos benefitted from an outstanding ride from the Italian jockey, who brought the five year old Adlerflug entire with a tactically excellent run on the far side rail to land the 2000 metre contest by 1½ lengths from English raider Best Solution, representing the Godolphin operation headed by Sheikh Mohammed and ridden by top French jockey Gerald Mosse. Potemkin and Enjoy Vijay, the two favourites in the race, were third and fourth respectively.

It is expected that Iquitos will have his next race in the Group 1 Longines Grosser Preis von Baden at Baden-Baden on Sunday 3rd September, a race he won last year You can see Sunday’s race here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8RD7INLdrM

ENGLISH RAIDER TIPPED FOR GERMAN OAKS GLORY

The 159th running of the German Oaks, the Henkel Preis der Diana, takes place at Düsseldorf on Sunday. A maximum field of sixteen runners are set to line up for the Group 1 event over 2200 metres.

Several of these have already taken part in one or both of two big Oaks trails in Germany. The Group 2 Diana Trial at Hoppegarten in June saw victory for TUSKED WINGS, who beat WELL SPOKEN in a photo finish. The third, fourth, sixth and seventh in that race, LITAARA, SHY ANGEL, GONDORA and PEMINA, also line up here.

Several of these also ran in a Group 3 trial for this race at Hamburg last month, where the Peter Schiergen-trained LACAZAR came home ahead of DIANA STORM (second), NAVARO GIRL (third), ALICANTE (fourth), WELL SPOKEN (fifth), GONDORA (sixth) and MEGERA (eighth).

However, both those trials were run on very soft ground, and with better ground expected on Sunday, it could be that horses that may not have been suited to the ground in those trials may show up better here, such as MEGERA and ALICANTE, first and second on decent ground in a Listed race at Düsseldorf in April. With stable jockey Adrie de Vries choosing the Markus-Klug trained Alicante over stablemate Well Spoken, and with British champion jockey Jim Crowley coming in for the ride on Megera, both could well have decent chances here. However, LITAARA gave Megera a 2¼ length beating in another Düsseldorf contest in April that was run on officially good ground, and although stable jockey Andrasch Starke has chosen Lacazar from the four Peter Schiergen-trained runners on Sunday, Italian jockey Daniele Porcu, who won the Group 1 Dallmayr Preis at Munich last Sunday, takes the ride on Litaara here.

Another of the Peter Schiergen runners on Sunday, ASHIANA, has been in fine form this year having won two Listed races at Baden-Baden and most recently at Hannover, defeating PRIMA VIOLETTA, SKY FULL OF STARS and PEMINA, who finished second, third and fourth that day, and who re-oppose again on Sunday. Although both Baden-Baden and Hannover are left handed in contract to the right hand track at Düsseldorf, Ashiana is another one to watch here.

However, English raider WUHEIDA, who runs here in preference to the Group 1 Nassau Stakes at Goodwood on Thursday for which she was declared a non-runner, looks to be head and shoulders above her opponents here. Winner of the Group 1 Prix Marcel Boussac at Chantilly in October on only her second start, Wuheida reappeared in last month’s Group 1 Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket, finishing second to the Aiden O’Brien-trained Roly Poly, who franked the form when winning the Group 1 Prix Rothschild at Deauville last Sunday. With regular jockey William Buick flying in especially for the ride, Wuheida looks to be the one to beat on Sunday.

PREDICTION: WUHEIDA – LITAARA – MEGERA – ALICANTE - ASHIANA

News Round-Up - Fegentri

CLASSIC WINNER TIPPED FOR CZECH FEGENTRI HONOURS

It’s not often you see a Classic winner running in a Fegentri race, however the latest round of this year’s Longines Fegentri World Series for Lady Amateur Riders, held at Karlovy Vary in the Czech Republic this Sunday, sees the appearance of 2014 Czech Oaks winner MARY YEATS. Having missed most of 2015 and all of last year, the Helena Vocaskova-trained mare was second in two decent handicaps at Lysa nad Labem and Most in May, and unseated her jockey in a hurdle race at Pardubice last time out when going well. The mount on Sunday of Norwegian jockey Nora Hagelund Holm, Mary Yeats could well be the one to beat here.

Hagelund Holm currently lies second in the Fegentri Ladies standings, 38 points behind leader Sara Vermeersch. The Belgian jockey has been in outstanding form this year, having won Fegentri races in Sweden and Germany recently. Sunday’s race sees Vermeersch take the ride on the eight year old DODYBUD, who for several seasons was one of the top sprinters in Slovakia, where he was trained by Miroslav Stancik. Having joined Czech trainer Marta Bielikova earlier this year, Dodybud’s form seemed to have deserted him, however he bounced back to form when third at Most last time out. However, all his best form is at shorter than Sunday’s 1600 metres, and it could be that the tank well be on empty in the closing stages.

RABBIT MAKFI won last time out and has the added benefit of having his regular rider, Czech representative Tereza Grbavcicova, on board. However, like Dodybud, all his best form looks to be more at sprint distances, and he is another one with stamina doubts.

YONAS ART had CALIOPE nine lengths back in fifth when winning at Lysa nad Labem in April, and the mount of Swedish rider Elin Rodjare, fourth at Prague last time out, has place claims here. ARTORIUS has been well beaten in all four of his races so far, however IWNIANKA, who was running in steeplechases this time last year, was second over this distance in a ladies amateur riders race at Most in May, and the Greg Wroblewski-trained mare, who will be ridden on Sunday by Germany’s Larissa Biess, could well fill the same spot here.

EXCHANGE could go well here on his best form, but the mount of Swiss rider Celine Weber has only raced once this season and usually needs a couple of races at least to show his best form, whilst the grey mare FIOMI has been carrying big weights around all season, and appreciated the drop in trip when winning over this distance at Prague in June.

PREDICTION: MARY YEATS - IWNIANKA - FIOMI - YONAS ART

POLAND: FIVE OUT OF FIVE FOR OAKS HEROINE FURIA

Just two years after Va Bank burst on to scene by winning the Polish Triple crown, it looks like the country may have found another possible superstar. FURIA, bred in Germany by the Fährhof stud, won her fifth race in as many starts when landing the Polish Oaks (Nagrody Lira) at the Sluzewiec course at Warsaw on Sunday.

Ridden for the first time by Russian jockey Aleksander Reznikov, Furia burst clear of her rivals at the top of the home straight and never looked in any dangers afterwards, coming home two lengths clear of nearest challenger Almenar.

You can see the Oaks here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwtUFO4rRc0

TOP JOCKEY QUEALLY IN DANISH DERBY BID

Jockey TOM QUEALLY, perhaps best known for his association with the legendary Frankel, who remained unbeaten throughout his career, heads to Scandinavia on Sunday to ride the Hanne Bechmann-trained SCREWBOX CARLRAS in the HK Enterprise Danish Derby at the Klampenborg racecourse in Copenhagen.

A very promising two year old, Screwbox Carlras was unplaced on both the Swedish and Danish 2000 Guineas this year, however could well appreciate the step up in distance here. Trainer Bechmann is also represented by SUN OF A GUN and CLOUD WALKER, who beat several of Sunday’s opponents last time out in the Derby Trial Stakes at Klampenborg.

Not surprisingly, with prize money of 800,000 DKK (approx 107,500 EUR) up for grabs, this year’s Danish Derby has attracted runners from all over Scandinavia. Swedish 2000 Guineas runner up MR SUAREZ and ZAGHARIT, bred and owned by pop star Benny Andersson of Abba fame, looks to be the best of the four strong raiding party from Sweden, whilst Norwegian trainer Niels Petersen saddles Swedish Derby sixth THE KID, Jagersro maiden winner EYES WIDE SHUT and MIKKLUS MAKKLUS, currently on a hat trick after winning two small conditions races at Ovrevoll last month. TIMES TIPPED FOR KAZAKHSTAN DERBY GLORY

British imports feature heavily in Sunday’s Kazakhstan Derby at Almaty on Sunday. The Group 1 contest, which follows the standard Derby procedure of being a race for three year old colts and fillies over 2400 metres, sees seven horses line up.

MAKE MEMORIES didn’t show much in two starts for Newmarket-based John Gosden, however the American-bred Street Cry colt made a big impact on his debut for new connections when winning the Kazakhstan 2000 Guineas where VALLEY LODGE, who ran ten times in England for trainer Julia Feilden without winning, was third. Another Classic winning English import is NILE EMPRESS, winner of a maiden race at Yarmouth in June last year for trainer Hugo Palmer before moving east to win last month’s Kazakhstan Oaks over Sunday’s course and distance.

AMSTERDAM ARTIST cost 200,000 Euros as a yearling at the Deauville Arqana sales in 2015, but failed to live up his price tag, being well beaten in both starts for trainer Francois-Henri Graffard. However, the Dutch Art colt has adapted well to life in Kazakhstan, winning both his starts to date, last time out when beating the former Russian-trained SET GLORY (who re-opposes here again but is still a maiden after six races) in a Group 3 contest at Almaty last month.

The one home-bred horse in the race in SHIKETAN, however the Medeo filly has finished last in both her races to date and cannot be considered here.

However, the British-bred SHAN TIMES, who never raced in his homeland having been bought at the Goffs sales as a yearling, looks to be the one to beat here. The Monsieur Bond colt, winner of a Group 3 contest at Almaty on his seasonal debut in May, shot to the top of many people’s predictions for the Derby when winning the Group 2 Expo Cup at Kazanat in impressive style last month (SET GLORY and a below-par NILE EXPRESS back in seventh and eighth respectively). Shan Times will be ridden on Sunday by his trainer, Kyrgyzstan-born Nurdan Sharshenbayev, who trained and rode Zhelkabyz to victory in this race in 2016, and who is tipped to win the Kazakhstan Derby for the second successive year on Sunday.

PREDICTION: SHAN TIMES - MAKE MEMORIES -

NILE EXPRESS - AMSTERDAM ARTIST
