The Bread TalkStudy #11 in series:

Act I: Physical Bread

(John 6:11) Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated asmuch as they wanted.

Act II: From Physical to Spiritual Bread

(John 6:31-33) “Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave thembread from heaven to eat.’” Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is the bread thatcomes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

Act III: Spiritual Bread

(John 6:35) Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never gohungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

IV. Recipe for Healthy Eating

1. ________________________________________________________________

(Proverbs 8:17, KJV) I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.

(Mark 1:35) Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.

2. ________________________________________________________________

(Exodus 16:15-16) When the Israelites saw it, they said to each other, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was.

Moses said to them, “It is the bread the Lord has given you to eat. This is what the Lord hascommanded: ‘Everyone is to gather as much as they need.’”

3. ________________________________________________________________

(Exodus 16:19-20) Then Moses said to them, “No one is to keep any of it until morning.” However, some of them paid no attention to Moses; they kept part of it until morning, but it wasfull of maggots and began to smell. So Moses was angry with them.

Steve Martin is today’s music guest. He has taught at North Shore Adventist Academy in Chicago, Illinoissince 1983 where he is currently the band director, physical education teacher, and vice-principal. Anaccomplished musician, he is also an award-winning teacher, having received the Zapara Excellence inTeaching Award in 1992. Steve’s CD recordings will be available attomorrow’s by the Praise Orchestra.

About the Music: As we gather for worship we hear 4 hymns that were arranged by Steve Martin. is a setting of Hymn No. 21. The tune, is a Welsh melody from about 1840.

also known as the was composed by Hans Leo Hassler in1601. Today’s arrangement of this hymn by Steve Martin is based upon Hymn No. 156.

is one of the older contemporary Christian hymns and is a setting of Hymn No. 255by James Swearingen .

was written by Nancy C. Townley for “Ministry Matters” and is based upon today’s scripture,John 6.

is a setting of Hymn No. 547 and is a translation by Mary Elizabeth Byrne of an 8th-century Irish poem. It is sung to the Irish folk tune, which is named after a hill near Tara in CountyMeath, Ireland.

is a popular melody for bagpipes that is often used for weddings. This melody wascomposed by German musicians, Ulrich Roever and Michael Korb in 1982 for Highland games held in Germany.

is a hymn of praise and peace written by Horatio Spafford, a Chicago businessman, when he heard his wife and children were killed in a shipwreck. The tune, is named afterthe ship and is composed by Philip Bliss. This piece is based upon Hymn No. 530.

is based upon Hymn No. 213 written by Jessie Strout and is a uniquely Seventh-dayAdventist hymn set to the tune, composed by George E Lee. The hymn has been used since1937 as the theme song for the “Voice of Prophecy” radio broadcast. Our member, Lonnie Melasheko, was a

speaker following H.M.S. Richards Jr..

In the United States, 1974 was taken up mainly with Watergate trials. To avoid impeachment, Richard Nixonresigns in August and Gerald Ford becomes the 38th President of the United States. opens in Spokane,Washington, Pioneer 11 passes Jupiter and sends back spectacular shots of the Great Red Spot.

This congregation celebrated its 10th birthday in 1974. Don Bostian was in his third year as senior pastor andRick Trott was the associate pastor until March. In May, Terry and Arby Carlisle came to take his place. Interestingto note is the fact that Terry took Clinical Pastoral Education that fall under Darryl Nicola along with a futurepastor of the church, Dan Stevens. In October, Walt and Carol Sherman arrive from Philadelphia to join the staffas another associate pastor for the growing congregation of 875. Carl Cotter was hired as the full-time custodian.

1974 was a year of firsts for the church. The first pictorial directory in production over the previous year wasfinally distributed in April. The congregation was asked to pay $1 to defray expenses. That same month sawGeneral Conference President Robert Pierson preach in our worship service. In May, the first newsletter wasedited by Richard Barnett, who worked in the hospital communication department. Being a congregation madeup of mainly young professionals, the church family enjoyed lots of social and recreational activities: bicycle rideto Clifton Gorge, canoe trip in Indiana, bus tour of New England foliage in October, Fall Festival and ThanksgivingDinner together.

The year saw a number of the church “kids” getting married in the church: Greg and Peggy Doyle on March 3,Dan and Bev Cobb on June 7 just before they moved to Loma Linda, California to attend dental school. Curt Carr,Jr. (who had been the church’s choir director for much of the first 10 years) married Marilyn Kiesz on June 30before moving to Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska. Other weddings include Brian and Candy Christenson onAugust 25, James and Donna Hedrick on September 8, and Ed and Dorilee Neufeld on December 26.

In the Music Department, David Hegarty was the organist and headed the church’s overall music program. Thechurch’s choir director, Stan Applegate rehearsed the choir at 8 a.m. on Sabbath mornings. Roger McNeilydirected the hospital chorale which sang at our worship service once a month and toured regularly each month.Jerry Shoemaker was the choir director at the Far Hills Church and they would sing here a couple of times eachseason. One member observed that at one time the church choir had been a really unique and important part ofthis church but by 1974 there were not enough singers to staff each choir. This was the first year that Handel’s“Messiah” was not sung in December. In the fall, Rosedale Chorale, the Mennonite choir under the direction ofLloyd Kauffman, sang for the first time in our church, and started a tradition that would last for the next 20 years.

At Spring Valley Academy, Adelphia Hill was the music teacher and was followed in the fall by Michael Dunlop, who had been the star vocal major at Walla Walla College. Donald Bassett, a former member of John PhillipSousa’s band, and at one time director of the Spring Valley Academy Band, gave his complete music files to theschool. The collection contained 2,000 complete band pieces and some original scores by John Phillip Sousa. Thisgift was valued at many thousands of dollars; some of the scores, are priceless! It’s also fun to note that onFebruary 9, Spring Valley Academy got the same telephone number they have today. That summer saw theinstallation of carpet over the bare cement floors, paid for by the Home and School Association.

The year closed with a business meeting where the congregation voted to start on Phase 2 of the churchconstruction with the Sabbath School wrap-around rooms, the Fellowship Hall, kitchen and church offices to beadded to the sanctuary. The budget cost was $600,000 and would extend the loan for building SVA an additional3 years (until 1979).

Parking Attendants and Team CaptainsNeeded! The Good Neighbor House rents out alarge portion of their parking lot for the DaytonDragon’s games and in the past has contracted witha parking company to manage the parking. Themanagement company took 30% of the proceedsand often did not do an adequate job of filling thelot. The result has been falling revenues from therental activity. This year a new “in-house” fund-raising team is being assembled to take over theparking for the games. There are 70 home gamesscheduled for 2014 and we need volunteers tomanage parking at GNH on game nights. We hopeto staff each game with four volunteers for twohours each evening or afternoon game.
