Introduction
Pusat Jagaan Kasih Bestari.
Established in 2007, the house caters about 50 children of different ages and 10 volunteers. It
started with a group of generous people wanting to help the orphanages by providing them
with shelter and to educate them to be independent in their life. The house is situated in akampong area where you will have to go through the narrow roads. Due to its location, the
house needs further attention, as the children have nothing to do besides roaming around the
neighborhood on their bicycles after school. The place receives funding from the communityitself and individuals who are concerned.
Pusat Jagaan Kasih Bestaris main goal is to give guidance to the kids and teach them some
basic skills of everyday life. They often have activities in and out of the house that will make
the kids active and outgoing.
While we were visiting the place, the children were chasing around the car porch area, since
they do not have a proper play area. We are proposing to construct an area for the children toplay and educate themselves. The area allows the children to learn new things and have fun at
the same time too. The teacher expressed himself that it would be good if we could to educatethem with some gardening skills but the problem is that they have only a minimal amount of
space for planting trees. From this problem, maybe we can try to resolve it and make a place
for them to plant some greenery.
To resolve the problem, one of the solutions is to have plants planted in recycled bottles and
hang it vertically. A child will adopt each plant so that each of it is their responsibility to take
care of it. In this way, it would be more exciting and they will understand more about
planting. The idea of recycling can also be implement to them. Living in a sort of remote
area, they should educate themselves about the idea of reduce, reuse and recycle.
We estimate the project to be less than RM 300 as we will be using recycled materials. It
would be great if we can work together with the children at this house as they can
communicate with us and to exchange ideas. Doing the project with the kids would also be a
part of their monthly activities.
The teacher of that house encouraged us to come and do projects there so that the childrenwould have more spirit and have more experience with people from outside. They mainlyreceived help from the universities student who will come and help him to improve the place
slowly. We would be honored to work with him and hope that it would give more fun and
education to the children.

Research
Thorough research was conducted to make certain that the best solutions were chosen to
fulfill each of the following main criteria:
a) Materials used are those that are recyclable and environmentally friendly. It is important for the design to be environmentally sustainable. This is turn means that it
should not produce much waste (if any), does not consume energy and does not require much
maintenance.
b) The design manages to achieve the set goals and satisfies the users (the children). It is
imperative that the children learn certain responsibilities and moral lessons that cannot be
taught in the classroom.
The three main items that we created to benefit the children (which are the vertical garden,
the seesaws and the stool/tables), were each carefully thought out to tailor to the conditions of
the site as well as to achieve our target outcome. Each item serves a specific function ineducating the young children and at the same time livening up the surroundings.
The children, mostly aged around 12 years old and comprising largely of boys, were not
getting the adequate playtime and space that is required around that age. This is due to fact
that there was no play equipment of any kind and that the land surrounding the house was
paved over by cement. This resulted in an area that is not stimulating and not very safe for
rambunctious children with active imaginations.
Firstly, we tackled the problem of no play equipment by constructing seesaws. Child
development research shows that it is important for pre-teen children to find a way to expend
their excess energy. We concluded that a seesaw is a fun and good way to do that. This would
also help keep the children contained to the compound for entertainment and not wander offinto the street, which is dangerous due to the oncoming cars.
Secondly, it was important to teach the children responsibility and the idea of caring
for something living. We came up the idea of a vertical garden that would save valuable
space as well as serve the purpose of teaching them morals. The children in pairs would be
entrusted with their own bottle (which holds a plant), to water and care for. To make things
interesting and to help make the children more involved, we provided a variety of plants to
give them a sense of ownership and pride.
Thirdly, we confronted the problem of inadequate seating by creating stools. However, the stools are versatile and can be used for a variety purposes such as a step stool
or even a table. The stools can be used to step on to help water the vertical garden and were
designed to be very sturdy and not far from the ground to prevent injury. This versatility is an
advantage as the children are free to use it in any way they choose and can even be included
during playtime.

Finally, we ensured that everything we made was mobile and able to be moved and
stored easily. It was also important to make sure they do not take up much space. This is due
to the fact that the compound is often used for events and thusly requiring it to be versatile.
Everything is relatively lightweight and easily relocated, easily carried by both adult and
child. We also to inspire the children that extraordinary things can be made from something
so mundane as a bottles, tires and planks of wood and to promote creative thinking. Inaddition, we hope to have instilled the importance of taking care of property so that it can
continue to be enjoyed and used for a long time to come.

Problems
Among the problems faced by the orphanage house is the lack of playing area for the
children. The house is surrounded by a compound covered in cement, which is not conducive
to child-playing. The shared fear of both the management and ourselves is that the childrenout of boredom will resort to going out on to the street for entertainment. The children are
still quite young and it would not be wise to let them play on the road. We required a safe but
entertaining way for the children to play.
Besides that, the need to educate them on home gardening is also pivotal. The management
wished to teach them how to care for a plant and the basics of gardening. This would also
take up their free time in a useful way that will benefit them in the future. The space for
gardening is limited due to the cemented surrounding. The hurdle was to come up with a
solution that is space saving and yet at the same time manages to convey the set task.
Solution
First off we decided we needed to build a simple yet portable play area due to the demandfrom the teacher. For this reason, we proposed to design mobile seesaws. This will help keep
them from wandering off the compound at the same time will keep them occupied in a safe
and fun way. The children seemed to enjoy the seesaws the moment we set them down and
their smiling faces and laughter were justification enough that we decided to do the right
thing. The seesaws are very sturdy and are able to withstand large amounts of weight. They
were also easily carried by the children which solves the problem of portability.
We proposed to make a vertical garden, which the management says will help to raise
awareness on environmental issues. There are at least 50 children and two of them are
encouraged to adopt a plant which will be placed on the vertical garden. This would teachthem responsibility that is appropriate for their age group, as well as teamwork. The children
seemed interested in the variety of plants available and were eager to learn more on how to
care for their new plants. The vertical garden didnt take up any space and livened up the
compound making it prettier and less bare.

Materials
The main materials were chosen for the following reasons:-Tyres
It is produced in large volume and durable. It is easily found and will last as a recycledmaterial. It does not easily wear down. It is also safe for the children to play on and it is also
waterproof therefore suitable for the climate in Malaysia.
Wood
It creates a nice finish, sturdy and durable. Obtainable if found at the right place, suitable to
make playground equipment as workshop waste and at furniture disposal points. It is also a
non-toxic material.
Plastic bottles
It is lightweight, durable and flexible. Very easily obtained and to collect since it is neededin large quantity for this project. It is also easy to be manipulated into desired design. It is
also easy to maintain.

Timeline
Figure 1. Proposed Timeline.
Figure 2: Actual Timeline.
Figure 2: Actual Timeline.
Figure 1 shows proposed timeline (15 May- 15 June 2013), where activities were planned out
before it was conducted, whereas Figure 2 shows that the actual timeline (18 May- 27 June),
followed to conduct the activities stated. Measuring of site went according to the plan, but
problem were faced for material shopping. Materials were tried to obtained from placeswhere the items were abandoned instead of purchasing it as such way it can meet up the
purpose of this project. Time was taken as it was hard to find materials that needed for theproject. Carpentry Workshop was needed for cutting of materials and were delayed to the
following month, which was on June when by right it was suppose to be on May, as slots
werent available and it was packed with other students and their projects. For recycled
bottles, we managed to start on the date stated, but as we cant find as many bottles, it got
delayed. Furthermore, mineral water bottles werent ideal for the project, hence we had to
dispose them in appropriate manner and collect more carbonated bottles as they are strongenough to withstand for the project.
For tyres painting, it got delayed as well since we needed the workshop to cut the tyres into
half. Time slots werent available for the proposed timeline, hence, we made appointment forthe selected time found in the actual timeline. The time frame, 6 days only needed to
complete the task of painting the tyres. Assembling the materials, only needed 6 days when in
proposed timeline stated 7 days even though we started off late. Reason behind is, due to lack
of time in building the items. Planting the plants took us 3 days, as we need to ensure the
plants are well cared, and watered as well as the bottles are safe enough to support the plants.
As some part were delayed, documentation had been delayed as well and longer compared to
the proposed timeline, just to ensure everything is done according to the project requirement.

Journal
18th May 2013
Location: Taylors Lakeside
An orphanage called Pusat Jagaan Kasih Bestari was the suitable site we found and wevisited the site for the first time today by car. We met and talked to the person in charge and
figured out the problems they faced. There were not so many children there but still we
wanted to do something that is able to educate and give a better future. We took a look
around the orphanage and thought it was a good site since it has a very wide and open space
just like we were looking for. Apparently the person in charge said that they always use the
space to put up tents when they have some important events. That has to be taken into
consideration when choosing the site. We also took measurement of the orphanage and not
forgetting we also took some photos of the orphanage and figured out which part of the space
was likely suitable so that we could improve by putting and adding some useful andbeneficial equipment for the children

May 2013
We did some research of the things that we can do that will actually help us to reach
our goals after we chose the most suitable site to improve. Since everyone gave out so many
ideas, we discussed about the advantages and disadvantages of the things or equipment that
were on our minds and discussed whether it is possible to do it or not. After some period of
time we finally chose the exact things that we wanted to do for the orphanage and at the sametime we thought about how it will help to solve the problems that they faced and educate the
children to be more concern about the nature.
21st May 2013
Since we have decided what to do already, we had a meeting about what materials we
wanted to use for the equipments and gave out some suggestion of places that we could get
the materials from. Instead of buying the materials, our aim is to reuse the thrown-out
materials which has a very close relationship to environment sustainability design and at the
same time reduce the cost of the project. Afterwards, we did some research on the
construction details on how to attach and combine two or more equipments together and the
suitable connectors and joints that we could use.
24th
May 2013Even though it was semester break and some of us couldnt come because they were
still on holiday, we decided to meet up to buy and collect tires at car workshops in Petaling
Jaya. Some of the workshop owners willingly to give us free tires but some would charge
expensively cause the tires we wanted were pretty big. Luckily we found one workshop that
charged us only RM1 for each of the big tires. Not just that, we also found some woods that
might be useful for our project near the workshop. Other than that, we started to collect
plastic not just around Taylors but other places as well.

Washing and brushing all the tires we collected last time were the thing we did today.
Instead of finding some other places to wash all the tires, we decided that itll be way easier
to wash them in Taylors. One of our group mates had prepared the things we needed for
washing the tires like brushes, soap and gloves. To work faster, some of the group mates
went to the back of block E to find if there was any pipe or water source that we could useand some went to ask the janitors to borrow hose. Afterwards we brought all the tires down to
parking lot and started to wash them. As usual, the process of collecting bottles was carried
on. Besides, we went to book the workshop and found suitable time and slots for us to use.10th June 2013
10th June 2013
The process of collecting materials was carried on today. We went to PJS7 to buy and
collect items from a junkyard. There were lots of steel and metal and we had trouble choosing
the right and suitable material for the project. Afterwards we went to hardware shop called
Woon in SS15 to buy some paints, nuts and bolts, thinner, varnish and some other materials
needed for the project. Even though we know what to buy but were not really good atchoosing the right connectors and joints, we were glad because we were assisted by the shop
owner because they know more than us. Other than that, since we need lots of bottles, we
asked our friends to give some bottles that theyve used.

Today we were allowed to use the workshop and the tools in there. We were assisted
by Mr Fendi , the carpenter works in the workshop, because some of the tools were
dangerous for us to handle. We cut each of the big tires into half and while cutting them,
there were fumes coming out from them and the smell was bad. Besides, we also untarnishedand sanding the wood planks we collected last time. Some of the stains on the wood were
quite tough to remove but we managed to improve the condition and the appearance of the
wood planks. We also collected some amount of bottles for the vertical garden.
14th June 2013
Last time we made a mistake by not choosing the right size of wood planks therefore
we went again to PJ7 to collect some more wood planks. This time we chose carefully and
made sure they were in the right size and thickness for the project. Other than that, we also
tried to figure out the dimension and discussed on how to cut the bottles besides collecting
them.

Since it would take some time to dry up the paint, so we decided to do the painting on
one of the weekends. We painted the tires that we cut for the see saw in Taylors and put the
tires in front of the workshop to let them dry. We went back to PJS 7 to collect some more
wood planks and get them cut into the right size. Since we still dont have enough bottles, we
collected some more and make sure to keep them safely in the studio.
