CompEx Unit Ex F Training
Introduction
CompEx Unit Ex F; is designed for personnel who work on electrical equipment in potentially
explosive atmosphere: The course is known as a foundation Unit (Ex F) and gives a basic
understanding of working in explosive atmospheres. Course duration is 3 days including theo-
ry, practical and written assessment.
CompEx Unit Ex F covers the foundation training of those working or will be working in ‘explo-
sive atmospheres’. It also covers the training requirements of people having responsibility for
those working in explosive atmospheres’.
Training Unit Ex F is a part of the international scheme for the training and certification of
core competence of personnel who work in explosive atmospheres or who work on equipment
for use in explosive atmospheres.
Who Should Attend This course is primarily aimed for managers, designers, project engineers and other personnel involved in hazardous area work activity, who needs an awareness on the requirements for hazardous area work activities, the concepts of explosion protection, the equipment and devices required in hazardous area.
Course Pre-requisites Basically, no prior knowledge of potentially explosive atmospheres is required for full participation of this unit

The Course is Designed to Provide: In the UK, the Electricity at Work Regulations (1989) imposed requirements to employ only competent persons to undertake electrical installation and maintenance work. Other countries have enacted similar legislation. The ATEX Workplace Direc-tives set the minimum requirements for improving the health and safety protection of workers potentially at risk from explosive atmospheres. The basic training programme and syllabus cover the basic requirements imposed by legislation on those working in explosive atmospheres. The training programme devised by Applus+ K2, an approved CompEx training center, will focus on these basic requirements of training and reflect the individual needs of such personnel.
• Brief overview of different legislation and directives- Health and safety requirements for working in explosive atmos-pheres, ATEX, DSEAR.
• Terminologies and definitions. • Hazardous areas and sources of flammable releases, sources of ignition, area classification, boundary signage.• Preventive measures that should be adopted to reduce explosion risk from flammable materials. • Characteristics of flammable materials or gases Ignition temperature, density, equipment temperature, etc. • Zones, gas subdivisions and equipment group.• Different explosion protection techniques.• Equipment nameplate marking interpretation.• Ingress Protection (IP) rating.• Permit to work system and safe Isolation procedures.• Installation and Inspection of equipment according to IEC standards.• Maintenance and repairs for Ex equipment Mode of training delivery will be a combination of classroom delivery and interactive training at the CompEx workshop. Assessment : Each candidate will be required to demonstrate understanding and knowledge gained through a multiple choice written examination.
