    STUDENT INSTRUCTIONS

    Procedures:1. You will be evaluated on the competencies listed below. Be very familiar with

    them and develop them in your presentation.2. You may use notes, but only those created during your 10-minute preparationperiod.

    3. You will have 10 minutes to present your role-play.

    Competencies/indicators to be evaluated:1. Describe the basic economic freedoms as part of our free enterprise system.2. Explain the advantages and disadvantages of entrepreneurship.3. Compare sole proprietorship, partnerships and incorporation as forms of

    business ownership.4. Explain the advantages and disadvantages of franchising.

    Event situation:You are the owner/manager of an established amusement park at the beach.One of your new employees, Ivan (the judge), is from Eastern Europe and is veryeager to learn more about our economic system. He is a very ambitious, hardworking employee who eventually wants to open his own business at the beach.Ivan (the judge) has been reading on the subject of economics and seems tounderstand basic concepts, but wants to hear your interpretation.

    Ivan has made a luncheon appointment with you to sit down and pick yourbrain. Since your business is successful, Ivan values your opinion and advice.

    Prepare to orient Ivan (the judge) on our free enterprise system, and forms ofbusiness ownership that can help him become a success in the future.

    Your event begins when you approach Ivan (the judge).

    JUDGE INSTRUCTIONS

    Procedures:1. Please review the student instructions to better understand the event and

    your role.2. The student will have 10 minutes to prepare and 10 minutes to make apresentation.

    Event situation:You (Ivan) are a recent immigrant from Eastern Europe working at an establishedamusement park at the beach. Your manager (the student) has impressed youas a successful businessperson. You are also very intrigued by the freeenterprise economic structure of the United States. With this freedom and hardwork, you also plan on becoming a successful business owner in the future.

    Your manager (the student) is always willing to sit down and talk about hisbusiness experience. You have done some extensive reading on the subject, butwould feel more comfortable hearing your managers (the students)interpretation. He has agreed to meet for lunch and talk extensively about theU.S. economic system and the types of ownership used here.

    The role-play begins when the manager (the student) approaches you.

    Please be sure to ask the following questions:

    1. Describe the basic economic freedoms as part of the U.S. free enterprisesystem.2. Explain the advantages and disadvantages of entrepreneurship.3. Compare sole proprietorship, partnerships and incorporation as forms of
