A very warm welcome to the Clifton School and Nursery, End of Year Review and

Celebration.

An opportunity to reflect together and celebrate all of the children's sensational

individual and collaborative achievements throughout the year.

Throughout the celebration please bear with us as we move children on and off stage.

I am sure you will all agree, so much has been achieved throughout the year and the

children have had a remarkable time.

We have prepared the following photo review for you to enjoy highlighting some of the

wonderful, memorable learning and fun that has taken place.

Clifton is such an inspirational place because of the extraordinary people around the

outside of the room. Learning needs to be fun, engaging and relevant to the modern world in which our young people

will live and thrive. This happens in abundance at Clifton thanks to the wonderful teachers, teaching assistants, support

staff and the whole school community. My sincere thanks for all you do for the children.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the whole school Leadership team lead by Mr Winkley for their continued

friendship and support. I also would like to take this opportunity to thank the governors lead by Mr Bill Wooley for

their time, guidance and support too.

My thanks to you, the parents, grandparents for your support, attendance at events, workshops, parent forums and the

feedback you provide that informs our school improvement plan and always means we can become even better as a

school. My final thanks go to our hard working Clifton Friends Committee lead by Mrs Keyes. Thank you for all you do

it is appreciated.

Miss Eaton our Graduate Sport assistant will be completing her teacher training - PGCE at St Olave’s and St Peter’s,

working with older children to gain more and wider experience. Good luck Amy you have been a star. Four of our

Graduate sport assistants Toby Atkin, Naomi Harkness, Hope Cartwright and Sam Padbury will be leaving for pastures

new – good luck.

Thanks to Mrs Scrimshaw and Mrs Walters who have worked tirelessly in Nursery this year and to Mrs Clarke who not

only is the Deputy Head but has also lead Nursery for most of the year. Thank you – it has been very much appreciated.

Mrs Loftus will be leaving us today to start her maternity leave. We all wish you and Gavin the very best wishes at this

exciting time.

Mrs Spencer has been at Clifton for 14 years. Her first full time post was as class teacher in Reception where she

worked with the late Sue Taylor. In 2011 she made the brave move to work with Mrs Hall in Year 2. Mrs Spencer has

incredible patience, professionalism and attention to detail. She has been a wonderful class teacher and has a passion for

her subject, always finding ways to make maths exciting and achievable for all. She has been a fantastic member of the

team at Clifton who loves the children in her care and will be missed by all.

On behalf of the parents Mrs Keyes will present you with a gift, wishing you the very best of luck in the future.

Now it’s time for the presentation of awards. I would like to ask Mrs Spencer to come

onto stage to present the Year 3 leaving gifts, scrolls and trophies.

The Year 3 children leave Clifton today, most of them moving to St Olave’s. I know

they are going to continue their inspirational learning journey at St Olave’s and will

continue to impress Mr Falconer and his staff by getting involved in as many

opportunities as they can and continue to enjoy and love their learning. All of the staff

at Clifton will miss you - good luck.

During the first week of the summer term Clifton, St Olave’s and St Peter’s were inspected

as a single entity by nine inspectors with collective expertise across the three stages of our

school. The lead inspector and his team spoke with remarkable warmth about the pupils,

who were their usual wonderful selves. The school received excellent in all categories, the

highest possible rating. This is because the inspection team saw so much evidence of the

achievement and personal development of the children from nursery all the way through to

the Sixth Form. Some of the quotes from the report, that you were sent yesterday and is

available to read on our website are as follows,

“The thematic curriculum for Clifton pupils aims to foster and embed lifelong learning.” ISI

Inspection April 2017

“The pupils are absorbed in a richly colourful, themed environment, rapidly learning new vocabulary, using it in conversations and applying it

as they confront new situations and solve problems.” ISI Inspection April 2017

“Pupils academic and other achievements are outstanding.” ISI Inspection April 2017

“Pupils display strong perseverance, commitments and a personal desire to achieve.” ISI Inspection April 2017

“The youngest children in Nursery and Reception achieve well above the national average and are helped to do so because of stimulating

learning experiences whereby they can explore their environment with considerable independence and develop a keen sense of enquiry and

curiosity.” ISI Inspection April 2017

“Pupils demonstrate an excellent moral understanding and take full responsibility for their own behaviour and their own mistakes. They

appreciate selflessness and kindness.” ISI Inspection April 2017

“The Children find out how to be better learners, relating to the four ‘learning superheroes’ displayed in their setting and developing their

four ‘heroic’ skills of resilience, collaboration, resourcefulness and being reflective.” ISI Inspection April 2017

You may have heard your children already using some of the language of our superheroes or you may have not.

The theory behind the Clifton Superheroes develops a learning culture that encourages children to become better learners, by

teaching them about the tricky process of learning. It allows our children to approach difficulties they encounter when learning,

without fear of failure and to understand what to do next. It allows the children to take small steps within learning and appreciate

the journey of learning, not just the end product. This theory is not additional to teaching, but should be embedded within

everyday teaching and learning. It also builds children’s confidence and gives clear concepts for the children to use to develop

understanding of the learning processes.

Today I do have a very special guest with me - well actually 4 very special guests – please welcome our superheroes.

This is Rita Resilience. Rita never ever gives up, no matter how difficult the task is in front of her.

She wears a crash helmet and safety glasses as she is prepared to get things wrong and understands that these are there to

protect her on her learning journey which might be rocky at times! Rita has a spring and this is there for her to be ready to

spring into action and to bounce back after making mistakes. Children need to have this skill because if they are afraid of failing

they will never try anything new and therefore not be able to be creative, a key skill in the modern world.

This is Ricki Resourceful. His superpowers make us more able to use a range of learning strategies and knowing what to do when

we do get stuck and how to get unstuck!

Ricki makes links between learning and builds on previous learning. Ricky loves to explore, wonder, imagine and reason and

enjoys wondering ‘What IF’

If we look in his rucksack he has the tools to be able to draw on a full range of resources including books, past experiences, the

internet and other people.

These are the Collaborative twins. They are happiest when we all involve ourselves as part of a learning community. They are

amazing at being able to learn with and from other people. Collaborative twins contribute to discussions and listen to other

people’s ideas, they can work alone and know when and where to seek help and advice.

Finally, this is Reflective Rory. Rory is very thoughtful he always thinks about himself as a learner and how you might be able to

do something that little bit better.

Rory reflects on his learning, considers what to do next and looks at ways he can refine or improve the task in hand. Rory

reflects and celebrates the learning of others too. As you can see he has his thoughtful cape and a mirror to remind him to use

his super power of being reflective.

These superheroes have been dressed by Mrs Deri Clark and her husband Max – a huge thank you to you

both and for our very willing VI formers from St Peter’s. They are going to leave the stage now and going to

spread their magic and super powers throughout the school.

At Clifton we aim to develop young people who are more curious, more willing to take risks and give things a

go, more imaginative, more creative, more thoughtful, willing and able to learn with and through others.

These superpowers are essential for the world our children will be living and thriving in. That is why together

with our school values they are the heart beat and pulse of our school.

Best wishes for a lovely summer.

Year 1 Independence Day - 4th July Party

We celebrated the end of the year and the finale to our theme in Year 1 with an American

party. Our last adventure with Jack ended in New York and we thought this would be a

fitting end to bow out with. The children made giant cookies, smores, milk shakes and fruit

skewers using fruits the colours of the American flag. We had fun and games outside

using a red, white and blue theme, ending with a team game to create the Statue of

Liberty out of Scrap. At the party we enjoyed eating hot dogs and pop corn as well as the

food we had prepared earlier.

Have a great summer from Mrs Johnson, Miss Murray, Miss Bromley and Mrs Headlam-

Morley!
